These severe cases can lead to conditions including streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), which has a mortality rate of up to 30 percent.
As of June 30, Japan has reported 1,144 cases of STSS this year, according to a report by the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun. This is the highest number of cases in nearly 25 years. Government statistics show that, over the past five years, the annual number of STSS cases has typically been below 1,000. In 2019, there were 894 cases, which decreased to a low of 622 in 2021. However, the number rose again, with 941 cases reported in 2023.

The number of severe Group A streptococcal infections in the United States has been rising over the past decade, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows. In the last five years, the U.S. has recorded an estimated 20,000 to 27,000 cases of invasive group A streptococcal infections each year, resulting in 1,800 to 2,400 deaths annually.
The increase in group A streptococcal infections is linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has weakened the immune systems of many people, Lin said. With the easing of pandemic restrictions, people are now being re-exposed to a higher number of pathogens. Those with weaker immune systems are at a greater risk of developing severe infections from group A streptococcus bacteria.
Symptoms of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome
Early symptoms of STSS include:

• Fever and chills
  
• Muscle aches
  
• Nausea and vomiting
  

Severe symptoms may develop within 24 to 48 hours of initial infection, including:

• Low blood pressure
  
• Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)
  
• Tachypnea (rapid breathing)
  
• Organ failure: Kidney failure may present as an inability to urinate, while liver failure can cause significant bleeding or bruising, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
  

STSS occurs when toxic proteins from group A streptococcus enter the bloodstream and trigger a systemic response, Lin said. These proteins can induce a cytokine storm, leading to widespread blood vessel dilation and a sudden drop in blood pressure. This can, in turn, result in shock and insufficient blood supply to various organs.
Once STSS develops, it can progress rapidly, causing severe symptoms and potentially leading to death. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, Lin said. The good news is that group A streptococcus has low antibiotic resistance, making many antibiotics effective.

Cannabis Revealed to Have Anti-Aging Effect in The Brains of Mice | (MiMaLeFi/iStock/Getty Images Plus)
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active ingredient in cannabis, has been shown to reverse conventional signs of brain aging in mice – a discovery that could help in finding ways to keep our brains healthier and sharper for longer as we get older.

The new study builds on what was already known about the endocannabinoid system and the cannabinoid receptor type-1 (CB1) in the brain, and their links to the gradual cognitive decline that comes with age.



What's more, the team from Germany and Israel was able to observe how the anti-aging effects were taking place: through a signalling pathway involving the mTOR protein, which is associated with the healthy regulation of cell metabolism, and from there the metabolome (the overall composition of small molecules in the body).

"We have now been able to show that treatment with THC has a tissue-dependent and dual effect on mTOR signaling and the metabolome," says molecular biologist Andras Bilkei-Gorzo from the University of Bonn in Germany.

Some of the same researchers had previously found that low doses of cannabis could improve memory and learning capabilities in aging mice, suggesting that there might be a relationship between THC and cognition worth exploring.

In this study, two groups of mice were used: young mice around four months old, and an older group around 18 months old. Some mice in each age group received a daily low dose of THC across a period of 28 days, and the effects were compared to age-matched controls.

The mice treated with THC showed a boost in mTOR activity in the brain and the production of more of the proteins necessary to form new synapses between neurons – which helps with almost every aspect of brain function.

What's more, mTOR activity in fat tissue dropped in the same way that it does with a calorie-controlled diet: In other words, the body starts to dial down some of its production processes in ways that have previously been shown to slow down biological aging too.



"We concluded that long-term THC treatment initially has a cognition-enhancing effect by increasing energy and synaptic protein production in the brain, followed by an anti-aging effect by decreasing mTOR activity and metabolic processes in the periphery," says Bilkei-Gorzo.

These are potentially very interesting findings for protecting brain health in old age. We know from previous studies that THC might be able to play a role in delaying the onset of dementia, and the drug clearly affects the brain in some pretty fundamental ways.

All of this still needs to be observed in humans, and it's worth remembering that cannabis has been linked with harming brains as well as helping them. If these mechanisms can be harnessed in a healthy way, however, there's hope for some significant brain health boosts.

"Our study suggests that a dual effect on mTOR activity and the metabolome could be the basis for an effective anti-aging and cognition-enhancing drug," says Bilkei-Gorzo.

The opposite of déjà vu is jamais vu – here’s how it works

We’ve all felt deja vu at one time or another. It’s that weird feeling that we’re experiencing something for the second time, and it’s something that is associated with the memory system in our brains. However, there’s also an opposite to deja vu, and it’s something that we’ve all probably experienced at one time or another, but you might now know that there is actually a name for it, and that name is jamais vu.



Have you ever looked at a word so much—or even said a word so much—that it suddenly didn’t feel real anymore? Maybe it just seemed to lose all meaning for some reason. Or, perhaps someone you have known for years suddenly seems like a stranger when you look at them—even for just a split second.

When this happens, you’re experiencing what scientists call jamais vu. In new research featured in the journal Memory, researchers look deeper at the phenomenon and how it works. To test the experience out, the researchers had participants complete a variety of different tests to see how long it would take words that were familiar to become meaningless or confusing.

Throughout their testing, the researchers tried having 94 undergraduates write out twelve different words, including some common words like “door” and some that were much less common, like “sward.” The researchers asked the participants to write down the words as quickly as they could. They told them they could stop for a number of reasons—including being bored or feeling peculiar, or even if their hand started hurting.

The researchers found that 70 percent of the participants stopped at least once because they experienced a feeling similar to what scientists define as jamais vu. This tended to occur after writing the words after one minute, usually around 33 repetitions of the word. During a second experiment, though, the participants were asked to write out the word “the.”

This time, they found that 55 percent of the participants experienced jamais vu after 27 repetitions of the word. The participants recorded their experiences in a multitude of ways, too. Some said they seemed to lose control of their hand, while others said something didn’t seem right, and the word looked like it shouldn’t be a word but that someone had tricked them into thinking it was one.



The researchers say they’ve been working on the research for the past 15 years, trying to learn more about this phenomenon and how it affects our brains. They say that it makes sense for our brain to have a system like jamais vu, as our brains need to stay flexible to the stressors that we throw at it, and that being able to complete a “soft reset” of sorts when staring at something too long may be one way the brain keeps from overextending itself.

I've had a few weird experiences like this.
One was walking out of a hospital and looking up at the huge buildings around me in amazement like I had never seen big buildings before. It was a weird, kinda déjà vu type feeling, but in reverse. Like I had never experienced it before.

Chinese Scientists Extract Water From Lunar Soil

Using brand new methodology, scientists in China have discovered a shockingly simple trick to extract water from lunar soil.

As the South China Morning Post and other outlets report, the new technique has been tested out on Moon dirt samples brought back from China's 2020 Chang'e 5 mission — the first to return lunar soil samples to Earth in 44 years.



Published in the journal The Innovation, which was founded in 2020 by young Chinese scientists, these findings suggest not only that Moon base settlers could produce potentially potable water from lunar soil, but also that they could use byproducts from the water extraction process to help build their bases.

When analyzing the samples, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences found that they contained high concentrations of hydrogen and oxygen, alongside other elements.

When heated to temperatures exceeding 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, those elements produced water vapor, per the country's CCTV state broadcaster. Interestingly, the soil itself apparently also melts after reaching this temperature threshold.

Along with the purported water vapor discovery, the researchers also learned more than was previously known about lunar soil through their experiments.

For instance, some of the hydrogen-rich minerals found in the Chang'e 5 lunar soil samples seem to have been created due to billions of years of exposure to solar wind. When heated, these compounds not only create water vapor, but also iron and ceramic glass.



Just a single gram of lunar soil is said to be able to produce between 51 and 76 milligrams of water. Accordingly, the researchers said that a ton of such soil could produce 13 gallons of water.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences team is, per SCMP, proposing that on future lunar bases, Moon dirt could be heated by focusing sunlight with concave mirrors. The iron produced as a byproduct of this method could also be used to build electronics, scientists say, and the melted soil could potentially have applications in building structures, too.

Though the researchers cautioned that more studies would need to be done to determine the feasibility of extracting water on the Moon using this new heating method, the findings are nevertheless groundbreaking — and there's little doubt that China's spacefaring rivals are seething at the fact that they didn't make the discovery first.

This is a huge leap.

We will see (or not see) military bases on the Moon very soon.
