The Dads is a new 10-minute documentary on Netflix featuring six dads on a fishing trip in Oklahoma which isn’t actually about fishing at all. Over a shared breakfast of waffles, they begin to reveal the love, hopes and fears they have for their children.

As different as they are from one another, they all are connected by a common thread: the unconditional love they have for their transgender and gay children but, The Dads isn’t about advocacy or politics. It’s about a handful of fathers who once felt lost finding community and connection.

News reports broke Thursday that the pro-Palestine protester who apparently killed Paul Kessler, an elderly Jewish man participating in a pro-Israel event, is a professor at Moorpark College. 


Police arrested Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji on Thursday after an investigation into Kessler’s death. Alnaji apparently struck Kessler on the head, which caused the latter to fall back on the ground and die from his injuries. 

What police are charging as manslaughter took place on Nov. 5 in Los Angeles’ Thousand Oaks neighborhood. 

ABC News reports that Kessler died from “blunt-force trauma.” 

”The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office said Kessler suffered from skull fractures and swelling and bruising of the brain and determined his death to be a homicide,” the outlet reports. 

Alnaji and Kessler were participating in concurrent but opposing protests in proximity of one another leading up to the altercation that led to the latter’s death.

Since it has been slow here, I though I would post something personal: I bought a new phone today!

Caution: talk of crass consumerism below

In late 2014, I bought a new flagship model phone. Five plus years later the charging port broke and I was forced to get a replacement. At that time, I purchased a used refurbished Galaxy S9 because it was all I could afford then and it has been a good phone for almost four years but two corners of the screen are broken and the battery is showing its age. It still works well enough but I questioned for how much longer and if it crapped out when I didn’t have any money, then I would be in a pickle plus it is no longer getting updates.

With funds unexpectedly available I had a decision to make between practicality and desire. After finishing up my storage bed/sleeping pod project with a cheap but nice 42” TV and realizing how bad the picture in my living room’s 60” ancient technology DLP unit was, to replace my living room dinosaur I added a 65” UHD TV to my Amazon wish list hoping the price would drop below $599 for Black Friday. Of course, I would need a wall mount too and added in some backlights for a nice cinematic experience and I would also probably end up wanting a soundbar so I was looking at a chunk of change for the whole package.

But then I got to thinking…

With no longer having visitors or doing any entertaining because people suck, I haven’t watched TV in my living room area or even used that room in almost a year and when I did, it was only because the TV was hooked up to my Technics amp/receiver and I could rattle my neighbor’s windows watching music videos so I reasoned that if I did get a new TV, it wouldn’t get used very often but would be a nice upgrade anyway.

Today I decided a new flagship phone (SAMSUNG Galaxy S23 Ultra) would be more practical especially since I rely on my phone for work and because it was on early Black Friday special for $899.99 down from $1199.99, I clicked the buy button. I also bought a serious rugged heavy duty case BF deal for $44.95 down from $79.95/ I had this brand on my previous phone and really liked it but wish it came in more colors and was a little less butch but I went for protection over aesthetics .



I don’t use my phone for games but the contacts, calendar and text messaging are critical and the mega camera in this thing is something I’m really looking forward to.

I’m still kind of reeling from dropping almost a grand but think this is a better and less frivolous purchase? Hopefully this phone will be the last one I ever buy or I can at least get 5 or 6 years out of it if I l live that long? It will be here Wednesday.

I couldn't find a medical conspiracies forum, so I thought I'd post this here. Previously posted on ATS.

This is a first for me, a committed (some would say bat# crazy) liberal/progressive. It took a lot for me to post this. I had to do some soul searching, followed by a few glasses of wine.

I was talking to my Mom and Dad on the phone today. A few days ago, they both got covid vaccines. Like me, they have received all their covid vaccines and boosters (Pfizer). My Dad informed me that a day after the covid vaccines, they were both running errands. When they got back home, my Mom wasn't able to walk at all. My Mom had polio at the age of two, in 1946. She is now 79 years old, and suffers from post polio syndrome.

So she has had a lot of problems with her legs. Anyway, my Dad took her to urgent care. They sent her to the hospital for them to run several tests. They did a CAT scan, an MRI, and some other tests. This happened over a period of two days. They had to wait a couple of days to do the MRI, because my Mom has a pacemaker, and they had to temporarily shut down the pacemaker to do the MRI. By the time my Mom had the MRI, two days had passed since her vaccine. A nurse practitioner also had her lift her legs and bend them. By this time my Mom was able to do this and was walking fine. It was the first 24 hours after vaccine that she had problems walking.

Anyway, after numerous tests, they found:......absolutely nothing. No problems. No indications that she had a stroke or aneurysm. She was back to being able to put weight on both legs and walk okay. They set up a follow up appointment to make sure everything was okay. My Dad and I both agree that my Mom had a reaction to the covid vaccine. For whatever reason, they didn't have the Pfizer one, so they gave my Mom and Dad the Moderna one.

I was really alarmed to hear this. I have had all the Pfizer vaccines and boosters, and have been fine. My Dad is 80, and was fine too. It was just my Mom who had the bad reaction. Now I've seen all kinds of theories and that on here regarding bad effects from covid vaccines. I rolled my eyes, but now am starting to wonder.

Of course, there is the post polio syndrome. The doctors that are around were not doctors when polio was an epidemic. So they don't know squat about polio or post polio syndrome. I think anyone with post polio syndrome should really think about getting additional covid vaccines. I would have not said this a year ago, a month ago, or a week ago.

But I've only had the Pfizer one. Moderna could be a little different. Who knows?

A domesticated wolf who ran away from his owner and survived alone for weeks, scrounging for food, was picked up by animal control and was destined to be put down until a rescue group stepped in. Over several months, the scruffy wolf slowly bonded with his rescuer, and today they have a unique, inseparable bond.
Steve Wastell, 50, co-founded the Apex Protection Project with his wife Paula. The wolf and wolfdog rescue, education, and advocacy group is based in Los Angeles, California.
100 Percent Pure
In December 2016, Apex received a call from a rescue group in Oklahoma about a wolf named Riggs.
"He'd been caught in the backyard of someone's house, dumpster diving," Mr. Wastell told The Epoch Times. "It turns out that he came from a place in Indiana, and was given to a lady, along with his sister, to take care of as a puppy and escaped."

Sadly, the woman didn't report Riggs's escape. A month later, he was found in a county 50 miles away where wolves are considered illegal.
"He wasn't raised by a wild family, so all he knew was people," Mr. Wastell said. "He spent about a month surviving by himself, going into people's backyards, and he got caught there and was darted by animal control."

Apex was initially told that Riggs was female and a "low-content" wolfdog, which meant that he was more dog than wolf, and he was being held at a gassing facility in Oklahoma.

An Apex team made the 19-hour drive to Oklahoma. Upon arrival, they learned that Riggs was not female, but male. "We weren't going to let him die," Mr. Wastell said, "so we said, 'Okay, well, let's get him in the van! We'll bring him back and we'll figure it out.'"
Riggs was "not aggressive," but was terrified. He struggled on the leash, but once inside the van he lay on his back and offered his belly to his rescuers. Back at Apex, the team was in for another surprise: not only was Riggs male, but after DNA testing, they discovered he was a 100 percent pure wolf.

An underfed, skinny Riggs spent his first few days at Apex in an isolation kennel for health assessment. Apex's 17 wolves and wolfdogs live in enclosures on the 2.5-acre property and go hiking off-leash every day in the surrounding Angeles National Forest. During his first meeting with the other residents, it didn't take long for Riggs's wolf instincts to come out.

"The whole pack started howling," Mr. Wastell said. "At first, he was looking around, and then all of a sudden this beautiful howl came from him. It was just really special."
Riggs shocked his rescuers by being "very needy for people," a trait that would have been dangerous in the wild. They had him tested for Williams syndrome, a developmental disorder, but he tested negative. "He just was really, really friendly," Mr. Wastell said.
Earning his trust was a much slower process. Apex staff worked with Riggs every day, but by far the wolf's most constant companion became Mr. Wastell.
"Riggs and I worked together every morning," he said. "I would take him hiking, I would work with him on listening to me ... slowly but surely, we started to trust each other. He was off leash within less than a year."

One major challenge that the organization faced with Riggs was that he could "get out of anything." An Apex volunteer once spotted Riggs on the roof of his enclosure after the wolf scaled an 8-foot wall, and the team knew they needed reinforcements. This explains why his enclosure is much higher than others.
Riggs has also taken time to find his most compatible roommates. At first, Apex veteran residents Thor, the alpha, and Loki took Riggs under their wing. Next, Riggs lived with Kona, but the pair eventually grew apart. Today, Riggs lives with his "girlfriend," Selena.
"Selena and Riggs are a power couple," Mr. Wastell said. "He's big on getting attention, so he doesn't let her get a lot. ... Selena thinks Thor is really fun, and every time she goes up to Thor, Riggs will squeeze between and push them apart, like, 'No, get away from my girlfriend!'"
Howls and Growls
Today, Riggs is 7 years old. He's still very social, has "Peter Pan syndrome" and thus "refuses to grow up, and "drives people crazy" with his playful antics. He has even earned himself the nickname "stinky little brother" for the way he winds up his fellow wolves and wolfdogs.

Reflecting on how far Riggs has come, Mr. Wastell said: "He's filled out now. He used to be quite the ragamuffin, his hair was all over the place ... but now he's fair, he's beautiful, he's strong."
His bond with Mr. Wastell also keeps getting stronger by the day.
"Every time I lay down, he thinks it's funny to climb on top of me and start pinning me down, just like a kid would with a dad," said Mr. Wastell, who chronicles his life with wolves on Instagram.

"The majority of their language is growling, it's howls and growls," he said. "I know that if I go to his enclosure in the evening, and I go say hi to him, and he growls in my face, he's not going to hurt me. He's telling me off because we didn't go hiking that day, or I was away for the night. ... Once you've really bonded with him, you really start to understand what the language is."
Apex Protection Project knows all too well the plight of wolves and wolfdogs who are bought as puppies and end up dumped or tied up in backyards when their owners realize how much work they are. The rescue is dedicated to giving these wolves the lives they deserve. To expand its operation in the future, the organization hopes to buy more land.

In sharing Riggs's story, Mr. Wastell hopes to clear the misconception that "wolves are vicious creatures that are going to kill humans."
"There's only been two people killed by wolves in the last 100 years," Mr. Wastell said. "They're very loving, they take care of their elders, they take care of their young. ... They have an incredible emotional life."
"We dream of living in a world where the wolf, and all species, are highly valued and respected for the place they rightfully hold on the planet, the balance they bring to the ecosystem, and the lessons they offer to humanity," he said.
