The Long War Pt.5; The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army

As the conflict in Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma, has seen a lot of important developments recently I thought it might be useful to resume this series on the Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) fighting against the military junta who seized power in a coup in 2021. To kick things off once again I thought it would be worth covering a group that was relatively obscure throughout the decades of fighting of the Burma Civil War but has recently come to assume a much larger role in the conflict and likely will be a significant player in a post-junta Myanmar.
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) is the EAO of the Kokang people, who inhabit the mountainous northeast of Shan State on the Chinese border. And while many other of Burma’s myriad of ethnic minorities have dealings with the People’s Republic, the Kokang have a closer link in that the majority of the population are ethnically Han Chinese.

These people, called the Kokang Chinese, originally began to migrate into the region in the 17th Century. The collapse of the Ming Dynasty saw a powerful Chinese military family also migrate, the Yangs, and they established their [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiefdom_of_Kokang]own state, Kokang. This became a tributary state to the Chinese Empire, before being ceded to British Burma in 1897.
Because of its remote location it was effectively left as an independent state by the British, retaining its distinctive culture and mandarin chinese language as a result. This situation also meant that Kokang was able to become a key part in the opium industry that provided much of the regions income, forming the northern tip of the infamous Golden Triangle.

While the trade was comparatively small for decades, the massive influx of Nationalist Chinese soldiers fleeing the communist take-over of China in 1949 saw the industry explode, with Kokang becoming a major player in global opium and heroin production. This was dominated by a rather unique warlord, Olive Yang, who commanded an army that allowed her to maintain control over the lucrative routes down through Shan State into Thailand.

This saw opium run one way while guns supplied by the CIA under Operation Paper ran the other, intended for anti-communist groups with the idea of building up forces for an invasion of communist China by the exile Nationalist elements. What actually happened was the creation of the powerful narco-armies that came to dominate the triangle, with the Kokang being a perfect example.
Olive Yang was able to play the government in Rangoon and the Nationalist Chinese forces off against each other for quite a while, consolidating her strength as the ruler of Kokang, but in 1962 she was arrested by the government in an attempt to bring the rogue region under their control.
Instead Kokang became the stronghold of the Communist Party of Burma, a situation that lasted until 1989. That year the Party collapsed into ethnic factions, with the Kokang leader Pheung Kya-shin founding the MNDAA.
The group immediately signed a ceasefire with the military government controlling Burma at the time, the first of the ethnic forces to do so. As reward Kokang was recognised as the First Special Region – in effect giving the Kokang autonomy to manage their affairs as they saw fit.
Narcotics continued to be the major source of income, though in 2003, under pressure from outside powers and the central government, poppy cultivation was banned, though the actual determination that this was carried out with has been questioned by outside observers and law enforcement.
Whatever the truth of this, certainly the Kokang-controlled border towns began to boom as they catered to Chinese gamblers with money to burn as China’s economy exploded. And naturally, with money being earnt the Myanmar army’s generals decided they wanted in and engineered a takeover.
In 2009 the MNDAA was beset by factionalism when Pheung Kya-shin refused demands for the MNDAA to become a Border Guard Force, essentially an auxiliary unit of the Burma army, and his deputy staged a coup with the support of the military. The MNDAA loyalists fled to China, along with almost 40,000 refugees, and that would have been the end of the organisation.
But Pheung was not finished, and resurfaced in December 2014, giving an interview in the Global Times, a Chinese Communist Party newspaper, declaring that he was the “King of Kokang” and would soon reclaim his territory. In February 2015 the MNDAA, assisted by their allies in the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Arakan Army (AA) attacked Myanmar army and police positions in Kokang, and several months of fighting took place.
The conflict even spilled over into neigbouring China when an errant airstrike by the Myanmar Air Force struck a field in that country, killing four Chinese civilians. This led to the Chinese military deploying considerable forces in the area and expressing their displeasure, and while the Burmese military made public apologies, there were also a number of accusations that Chinese soldiers were fighting alongside the Kokang as volunteers or mercenaries.
Things did settle down, though the occasional skirmish flared between the MNDAA and the Myanmar army for several years until the military coup of February 2021. At that point conflict broke out between the MNDAA and the military, as it did with many of the EAO’s.
While much of the attention has been put into the efforts by the various People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) that have sprung up to fight the military in previously peaceful parts of the country, as well as the operations conducted by bigger groups such as the Kachin Independence Army or the Karen National Liberation Army, the MNDAA has largely been overlooked in reporting.
But that is now all changing. In alliance with the Ta’ang and the Arakan, who between them form the Three-Brother’s Alliance, the MNDAA launched an offensive in October 2023 code named “Operation 1027” against the Myanmar military and pro-Junta allies throughout northern Shan State. This offensive has seen a number of important strongpoints fall to ethnic forces, and coordination has also occurred with other groups such as the Kachin to put heavy pressure on the military’s presence in northern Myanmar.
Interestingly one of the stated aims of the offensive by the MNDAA is the closing of call centres located in towns in the area that were under the control of the military and which were running phone-and-cyber scams, as well as shutting down criminal gangs that were linked to slave labour and sex trafficking that operated widely in the border areas. This situation had been publicly condemned by the Chinese government and led to their demands that the Myanmar government deal with the problem, something they had failed to do, probably because of the general’s relationship with this illegal business.
It seems that the MNDAA, by loudly proclaiming their intent to eliminate these criminal enterprises, is hoping to further improve their relations with Beijing, no doubt anticipating China’s support when they reestablish themselves in their former domain and possibly giving them much greater sway on a post-junta government because of this backing.
Because unlike most of the other ethnic groups who are fighting for freedom, the MNDAA do have a powerful outside sponsor in the People’s Republic, ties that are reinforced not just by proximity and business interests, but by blood. And that means the MNDAA and their leadership will not remain as an obscure group on the fringe of things any longer.

BREAKING: Far-left BLM activist John Sullivan convicted on all charges in Jan 6 case

Sullivan, 29, of Utah, has been officially charged on seven counts: Obstruction of an Official Proceeding; Civil Disorder; Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds; Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds; Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building; Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building; Aiding and Abetting, per the Department of Justice.

U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth has ordered Sullivan to be placed into custody until his sentencing date, per NBC.

Sullivan, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist who self-proclaimed to be a journalist on Jan. 6, recorded one of the most infamous videos from inside the U.S. Capitol on that day. The video showed the shooting death of military Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt at the hands of U.S. Capitol police officer Michael Byrd.

Sullivan sold the rights to several of his videos to multiple media outlets for tens of thousands of dollars. Both CNN and NBC paid Sullivan $35,000 for the video of Babbitt. Sullivan also received $5,000 from Left/Right Productions and $2,500 from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

During court testimony, Sullivan, who is the founder of Utah-based extremist group Insurgence USA, maintained that he had embedded himself among the pro-Trump crowd to record the January breach of the Capitol building. However, the court didn't buy his testimony.

Prosecutors submitted videos into evidence that showed Sullivan intentionally inciting and encouraging violence within the crowd.
 
"I was only observing," Sullivan said in his trial testimony. "I followed the crowd. I'm there to document."

Sullivan's testimony was followed up by prosecutors who played multiple videos of Sullivan urging on the mob which included a self-declaration of wanting to make "Trump supporters f-ck sh-t up."

"I'm gonna side with anyone who is ready to rip this sh-t down," Sullivan said in one video shared by prosecutors. "I brought my megaphone to instigate sh-t," he said in another video.

In addition, Sullivan can be heard saying on video, "We did this together. F-ck yeah! We are all a part of this history" and "Let's burn this sh-t down."

NBC News reports that prosecutors portrayed Sullivan as an "antiestablishment" activist who had the goal to "burn it all down" during the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot. An FBI special agent noted via sworn affidavit that Sullivan admitted that he had no press credentials. The investigation failed to yield "any connection between Sullivan and any journalistic organizations."

During initial court proceedings, Federal prosecutor Bryan Reeves pointed at Sullivan's protest-drawn provocateur persona and alleged that "He will pose as different members of organizations, even those that have disavowed him" just to stir up trouble. Sullivan also had plans to return to Washington for Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, Reeves emphasized.

Sullivan was arrested and charged earlier in July 2020 during an Antifa-Black Lives Matter riot where drivers in Provo were threatened and one was shot.

Additionally, it was disclosed that Sullivan was formerly an Uber-endorsed Olympic speed skating prospect. He performed a variety of odd jobs during his training before starting his new job as an Uber driver. The ride-hailing service linked to Sullivan's self-started GoFundMe page in an article headlined "Meet John: An Aspiring Speed Skater," which highlighted Sullivan. The campaign raised $2,500 before it was removed from the site.

The self-described social justice activist's checkered past has raised doubts about his genuine intentions. Even political left figures have questioned Sullivan's actions following the Jan. 6 riot and denounced his effective attempts to blend in with the protest crowd. Lex Scott, the head of BLM's Utah chapter, maintained to Fox News that his group "does not want to be associated" with Sullivan.

CNN's Anderson Cooper featured Sullivan on his show in the wake of the riot to present his account as the self-professed heroic reporter who both witnessed and captured the female Air Force veteran's death.

In response to the findings, the NTSB recommended 17 major automakers install intelligent speed-assistance (ISA) technology in all new vehicles, which should, at the very least, warn speeding drivers.


The ISA tech utilizes a car's GPS, a database of speed limits, and onboard cameras to ensure compliance with legal speeds. It could range from passive systems that only warn drivers via haptic, visual, and audible alerts to active systems that prevent them from speeding at all.
The mandatory ISA tech in vehicles is also under consideration in the European Union, a motion that dates back to 2019.


The NTSB also called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to mandate speed-limiting technology in new vehicles and educate the public on its benefits. The NHTSA should incentivize the adoption of ISA tech through the New Car Assessment Program, as well as identify repeat speeding offenders and develop a way to stop them.


Meanwhile, the NTSB called on all 50 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia to implement ways to identify repeat speeding offenders. New York has already announced a similar move earlier this year.
The NTSB also urged the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to join in on the cause, particularly with brand marketing that emphasizes speeding. The agency has previously expressed its intention to lower speed limits due to increasing vehicle weights, particularly in the age of electrification.

In their "Boost Crime To Implement Gun Bans On The Citizens" plan they are now refusing to prosecute multi-conviction felons who are caught with firearms and are now saying it is unconstitutional to NOT let felons have guns!

"If these statutes are struck down both at the federal level, and then obviously, they wouldn't be struck down at the state level, what you're going to see is you're going to see another uptick in crime," Kushner said.

The U.S. Attorney's office filed an appeal immediately after the ruling, which will be heard by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The word “pyramid” immediately brings to mind the imposing triangular structures of the Egyptian desert. Despite their iconic status, these structures might not be the world’s oldest pyramids. Instead, researchers argue in a new study that this title belongs to a pyramid made of lava and buried in Indonesia. Gunung Padang is a megalithic site on a hilltop of Java island whose name means “mountain of enlightenment,” according to a study published Oct. 20 in the journal Archaeological Prospection. With its stone terraces and upright slabs, Gunung Padang was typically assumed to be an ancient cemetery or religious spot.


An interdisciplinary team of archaeologists, geophysicists and geologists decided to study Gunung Padang. They dug trenches, drilled into the mound’s center, took soil samples and scanned it with several 2D and 3D surveying tools.

Their findings revealed evidence of a buried “pyramid-like” structure with “complex, multi-layered and extensive ancient constructions,” the study said.

Gunung Padang was built in three major phases, researchers said. The first phase began when “a natural lava hill” was “meticulously sculpted” between 25000 and 14000 B.C. The site was then abandoned for millennia. Eventually, it was “deliberately buried.

Natawidjaja said that Gunung Padang’s age poses “a challenge to our current understanding of human history,” but it is not the only site to do so. He pointed to Gobekli Tepe, a settlement in modern-day Turkey that “was constructed about 11,600 years ago.”

Researchers determined Gunung Padang’s age by radiocarbon dating soil samples from the man-made layers and comparing this to the visible weathering of nearby stones, the study said.

Once again what we think we know can all change with simply digging something out of the ground. 
This "pyramid" would predate Egyptian construction of these tombs by more than 13,000 years.

If the dating is correct then these pyramids would the oldest to date, and arguably the oldest advanced civilization known up to this point.

The Chinese owner of a makeshift biolab discovered in a remote California city has ties to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and a Chinese military program, according to a report by the House Select Subcommittee on the CCP.

Jia Bei Zhu, 62, was arrested in October for distributing misbranded medical devices and lying to the FDA.
The lab, located near Fresno, California (less than 200 miles from where Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Joe Biden on Wednesday), was discovered serendipitously when a local code enforcement officer noticed a garden hose attached to the facility. This led to the discovery of thousands of vials, some labeled in Mandarin, others in an undeciphered code. However, the inaction by the FBI and CDC in this matter, as reported by the committee, is perplexing and concerning.


Zhu, a PRC citizen, was reportedly a key figure in China's "military-civil fusion organizations" - entities that blur the lines between civilian research and military applications. This strategy, according to the State Department, is part of the CCP's grand vision to transform its People's Liberation Army into a formidable global power by 2049.
While the committee's investigations unearthed Zhu's extensive involvement in several PRC government-controlled companies, his activities in the U.S. under the alias "David He" and the discovery of dangerous materials in the unlicensed lab in Reedley, California, are particularly alarming. Here, officials found over 20 potentially infectious agents, including HIV and Malaria, and genetically engineered mice carrying COVID-19.

Zhu's confession of operating his companies to "further PRC policy" and meet demands of a PRC premier raises serious concerns about espionage and intellectual property theft. His history of operating companies in Canada, engaging in the massive theft of American cattle-related intellectual property, and fleeing to the U.S. after a $330 million judgment, only adds to the gravity of the situation.
The committee also highlighted Zhu's inflammatory private messages on WeChat, where he talked about defeating "the American aggressor" and referred to his companies as tools against "American imperialism."
CDC Ignores Evidence?
But perhaps even more disturbing is the alleged disregard by the CDC for potential evidence, including a freezer labeled "ebola." This negligence or possible cover-up raises critical questions about the integrity and competence of these federal agencies in handling matters of national security.

The committee's findings corroborate an investigation by the Daily Caller from August 2023, which linked Zhu's biolab to Ai De Biopharmaceutical in Qingdao, China. This connection suggests a broader network of PRC-controlled companies engaging in dubious activities on American soil.
As the full scope of Zhu's operations and his connections to the PRC government unfold, this case may well represent a glaring example of the CCP's covert operations in the United States, blending industrial espionage with potential biological threats. The implications for national security are profound and demand an urgent and thorough response from U.S. authorities.
