I made tomato powder for the first time. The recipe is easy. Thinly slice some tomatoes, dehydrate, grind up (I use a coffee bean grinder), and store. Of course you can add what you want to your taste. Maybe onion powder or garlic powder. Salt. Whatever. 

My thoughts?
1. It takes a lot of tomatoes to make a little powder. It takes a long time to dehydrate. Yes, I know tomatoes are mostly water.
2. It's a mess. My dehydrator may never be the same. 
3. The powder sticks to every thing. 
4. It smells very tomato-ee.
5. Canning tomatoes is quicker.

If you have a specific need for tomato powder, go for it. It's not hard. If you are just looking for a way to preserve tomatoes, there are easier ways. I find canning is less mess and less time consuming than the powder believe it or not. 

If you can sauce, you have a ready, quick meal. Just add noodles. The powder is just a ingredient for something else. You still have to make it. So it takes longer on the back end too. 

The jelly jar in the picture is the result of 8 trays of dehydrated, sliced 'maters.

Increasingly, fast food chains have been replacing workers with computers for tasks like customer service, and McDonald’s recently opened a fully-automated restaurant.

During a 2017 interview, Meadows claims that genocide of 86% of the world’s population is “inevitable.”
However, he insists that a “benevolent” dictatorship could accomplish the mass de-population “peacefully.”

“We could [ ] have eight or nine billion, probably,” he says of the world’s growing population.
“If we [b]have a very strong dictatorship which is smart[/b] … and [people have] a low standard of living,” Meadows says as he explains how the population reduction agenda could be triggered.


“But we want to have freedom and we want to have a high standard of living [b]so we’re going to have a billion people[/b].
“And we’re now at seven, so [b]we have to get back down[/b].


“I hope that this can be slow, relatively slow, and that it can be done in a way which is relatively equal, you know, so that people share the experience.”

The plan was for farmers to take their leftover crop residues, put them in barrels, add the GE bacteria, and produce alcohol to run their tractors. The nutrient-rich sludge left at the bottom of the barrels could then be spread on their fields as fertilizer. The EPA had approved a field test of the bacteria…until a graduate student at Oregon State University ran an experiment showing that plants grown in soil mixed with the GE bacterium died within weeks. Previous field tests by the EPA had shown that GE bacteria could spread geographically at a breathtaking pace, eventually across the entire globe. If the Oregon State graduate student had not done the test and sounded the alarm, a GE bacterium that destroys most plants it meets could have been released and infiltrated soils across the planet, causing an ecological cataclysm and, potentially, even ending life as we know it here on Earth.


[b]An ”Unprecedented, Open-Air Experiment”[/b]

These are the stakes when we tinker with Nature, yet these lessons are routinely disregarded by the agrichemical industry. Companies like Bayer, Syngenta (ChemChina), Corteva (Dow-Dupont) and BASF are investing heavily in the development of GE microbes for soil application, with at least two GE soil microbes currently being used. Genetic engineering of microbes was long the preserve of scientists looking for ways to decontaminate polluted soils – but now the technology has spilled over into agriculture, supposedly to enhance yields – but at what price? While these products are referred to by industry as “biologicals” in an effort to cast them similarly to natural soil microbes, they are more correctly “engineered biologicals” given their profound changes that follow human tampering with their genetic code.
Unlike synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides, these engineered biologicals are derived from naturally occurring microbes typically found in soil or plants. Then follows their all-important genetic engineering. As a [b]new report[/b] from Friends of the Earth puts it, the use of GE microbes “represents an unprecedented open-air experiment that may have irreversible consequences.” Even scarier is the complete lack of transparency and federal oversight for these products, the release of which could have monumental consequences for human and planetary health.


[b]Throwing a (GE) Wrench in the Works[/b]
Just as human health relies on our gut microbiota, a plant’s health also relies on a microbiome, one made up of the innumerable microbes (notably bacteria and fungi) that occupy the soil around the plant’s roots. The plants microbiome is referred to as the rhizosphere, and a healthy, living soil contains more life per unit area than anywhere else on the planet. The rhizosphere represents an incredibly dense, intricate ecosystem that plays profound roles in supporting life on this planet, such as making nutrients in the soil available to crops and regulating global [b]carbon and nitrogen cycles[/b]. What’s more, a living soil represents a huge interconnected network that allows plants to communicate with one another, triggering defenses and sharing nutrients in ways that benefit the wider ecosystem, [b]even within an agroecosystem[/b]. A network that can be thrown into disarray when herbicides, fungicides and other pesticides are thrown into the mix – let along new-to-nature GE bacteria. This technology meddles hugely with the unknown: of the billions of species of microbe in our soils, we’ve only scientifically characterized a few hundred thousand—probably less than 1 percent.


The truth is that Big Ag and Biotech are tinkering with profound forces about which we (and they) know very little. Releasing GE microbes into the soil is a terrible idea, plain and simple, because we just can’t be sure how or where the modified genetic material will end up or how it might be altered. Soil bacteria are specialists at moving genetic material around – in fact it was [b]this understanding that spurned the GE revolution[/b] in the 1970s and ‘80s.  Yet with little or no proper oversight, GE microbes are being applied to US soils as we speak, and companies are racing to develop more and more GE biologicals. As of now, the two traits Big Ag are working with are about enhancing their ability to kill pests or generate nutrients like nitrogen (as in [b]Pivot Bio PROVEN[/b] product, one of the GE biologicals currently in use).


[b]Risks and Unintended Consequences[/b]
There are catastrophes in recent history that show us the problems that can arise with the outdoor release of GE organisms. In Brazil, for instance, [b]GE mosquitoes were released[/b] with the goal of reducing the mosquito population, but they may have unintentionally changed the gene pool of the local populations and created stronger mosquitoes.
This risk is much greater with GE microbes, which can exchange genetic material with other microbes through [b]horizontal gene transfer[/b] (the same process that causes bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics). What happens when GE microbes are released into soil and exchange genetic information with wild species? What if GE microbes travel to unintended locations, crowd out native microbial communities, and reduce the diversity of life in the soil? Given the complexity of the soil microbiome and the huge gaps in our knowledge about it, releasing GE microbes is an extremely risky and dangerous enterprise. It’s like jumping into a well when it’s too dark to see what’s down there.
The genetic manipulation of microbes is itself a risky process. As we’ve argued before: despite what optimists say, gene-editing is not a precise science and can produce [b]unpredictable and unintended consequences[/b]. A [b]recent study[/b] involving human embryos found that when CRISPR was used to repair a mutation that can cause hereditary blindness, it [b]appeared to[/b] “wreak genetic havoc in about half the specimens that the researchers examined.”


[b]Regen Ag Now![/b]
The industrial approach to agriculture has put us on this path. Monoculture (the cultivation of large areas with a single crop), especially when coupled with intensive use of agrochemicals, that try to counter the low intrinsic resistance of the crop, and synthetic fertilizers, that try to boost yield, depletes the soil of nutrients, microbial life and makes crops vulnerable to pests and diseases. This generates the fertilizer and pesticide “treadmill” that farmers struggle to get off: a new chemical is developed to kill weeds, weeds become resistant to that chemical, soils become sterile, so a new, more potent chemical is developed, more fertilizer is applied, and so on and so on. Companies are now turning to biologicals as the agrichemical era looks ever less promising, and genetic engineering, in its many forms, is now the new frontier. GE in agriculture parallels the similar growth in interest in genetic vaccines in the healthcare space, a trend that became clear with the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  
GE ag is far from our only option. The alternative is to look to nature and adopt the [b]principles[/b] of [b]regenerative agriculture[/b].

Roberts glanced over to the left side of his desk, seeking a particular folder.

"Ah", he thought, "there it is" as he reached to grab it.

Just then, the voice of Adrienne, his admin assistant, came through over the intercom:

For a moment, he did not know where he was. It was cold and darkness was closing. Snow all over the place and an uncomfortable sensation of long-forgotten weighty items. Ahead of him, a guttural voice spoke in a commanding tone. Instinctively, he dove into a snowbank just as a loud ripping noise rent the air above, with smacking sounds in the earthen bank behind him. Machine gun! Fear seized him and he curled into a fetal position as a vehicle with a loud motor and squeaking tracks approached his location. More voices in that other language. He realized he was tightly clutching a rifle, but couldn't shake his fear enough to point it to his front ...

A strange high-frequency noise steadily increased in volume and the entire area was suddenly illuminated as if a huge spotlight had been turned on. Roberts looked up as a loud pulsing sound accompanied what looked like elongated blobs of ... light ... energy ... shot over his position and impacted to his front.

Loud explosions and then screams ... and then silence.

But the illumination was still there and increasing in intensity. Finally it seemed centered over Roberts himself, bathing him in brilliant light. Shaking in terror, Roberts stared at the source of the illumination, amazed at how large it was. Putting his rifle down, he forced himself to speak.

"Are ... are you God?"

The "light" suddenly vanished and Roberts closed his eyes and felt as if he was falling.

After a moment, the familiar sound of the office air conditioning system filled his ears. Startled, he opened his eyes and stared at the telephone handset he was fiercely grasping. The line was dead, and he carefully replaced the handset on the receiver.

It took him a moment to stand; he felt shakey. Staggering to the door, he opened it and walked into the reception area. Glancing apprehensively at Adrienne, he mumbled, "I'm taking a short stroll, I'll be back."

Adrienne simply side-eyed him with a mysterious little smile.

Costa Rica declares state of emergency over migrant crisis after record quarter of a MILLION people crossed through treacherous jungle to reach US this year

President Rodrigo Chaves said on Tuesday he has ordered officials to declare a state of emergency as the number of migrants passing through the small Central American nation after crossing from South to Central America through the jungle jumped sharply, reaching 386,000 in 2023 alone.

'The people that arrive are passing across Costa Rica trying to get to the United States, basically... I have instructed the security ministry to take a firm stance with anyone who takes Costa Rica's kindness for weakness,' Chaves said at a press conference, referencing recent riots by migrants crossing the country.


While the migrants are only passing through Costa Rica, they often stay in transit countries like the tourist haven for weeks or months while they make money to continue their journey. These migrants have filled refugee camps in the country, as well as in others such as Panama and Mexico. 

Chaves said he will allow the migrants to get to the north of the country, and transport them via buses, but 'disrespect' towards authorities will not be allowed,' as reported by The Tico Times. 

The migrant presence in Costa Rica has increased as a record number of asylum seekers cross the dangerous 575,000-hectare jungle called the Darien Gap, which connects Colombia and Panama and serves as a route to the US for desperate migrants.

The dangerous jungle crossing has been reduced from over a week to as little as two days for the strongest walkers, by a network of guides, established camps and rudimentary trail markers that start in the Necocli, on Colombia’s side of the gap. 

Venezuelan migrants in Huehuetoca said the Darien operation appears to be dominated by Colombian paramilitary groups, which funnel part of their proceeds to Panama’s autonomous Indigenous groups.
