The findings have been made at a US particle accelerator facility called Fermilab. They build on results announced in
2021 in which the Fermilab team first suggested the possibility of a fifth force of nature. Since then, the research team
has gathered more data and reduced the uncertainty of their measurements by a factor of two, according to Dr Brendan
Casey, a senior scientist at Fermilab. "We're really probing new territory. We're determining the (measurements) at a
better precision than it has ever been seen before."

In an experiment with the catchy name 'g minus two (g-2)' the researchers accelerate the sub-atomic particles called
muons around a 50-foot-diameter ring, where they are circulated about 1,000 times at nearly the speed of light. The
researchers found that they might be behaving in a way that can't be explained by the current theory, which is called
the Standard Model, because of the influence of a new force of nature.

Although the evidence is strong, the Fermilab team hasn't yet got conclusive proof. They had hoped to have it by now,
but uncertainties in what the standard model says the amount of wobbling in muons should be, has increased, because
of developments in theoretical physics. In essence, the goal posts have been moved for the experimental physicists...'

in two years' time sufficiently for them to get their goal. That said, a rival team at Europe's Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
are hoping to get there first.

Dr Mitesh Patel from Imperial College London is among the thousands of physicists at the LHC attempting to find flaws
in the Standard Model. He told BBC News that the first people to find experimental results at odds with the standard
model would be one of the all time breakthroughs in physics.

"Measuring behaviour that doesn't agree with the predictions of the Standard Model is the holy grail for particle physics.
It would fire the starting-gun for a revolution in our understanding because the model has withstood all experimental tests
for more than 50 years." Fermilab says that its next set of results will be "the ultimate showdown" between theory and
experiment that may uncover new particles or forces.

So what is the Standard Model and why is getting an experimental result that doesn't quite fit in with its predictions such
a big deal? Everything in the world around us is made from atoms - which in turn are made from even smaller particles.
These interact to create the four forces of nature: electricity and magnetism (electromagnetism), two nuclear forces and
gravity.

Their behaviour is predicted by the standard model, and for fifty years it has predicted their behaviour perfectly, with no
errors whatsoever. Muons are similar to electrons which orbit atoms and are responsible for electrical currents, but they
are about 200 times as massive. In the experiment they were made to wobble, using powerful, superconducting magnets.

The results showed that the muons wobbled faster than the standard model said it should. Prof Graziano Venanzoni, of
Liverpool University, who is one of the leading researchers on the project, told BBC News that this might be caused by
an unknown new force. "We think there could be another force, something that we are not aware of now. It is something
different, which we call the 'fifth force'.

"It is something different, something we don't know about yet, but it should be important, because it says something new
about the Universe." If confirmed, this would represent arguably one of the biggest scientific breakthroughs for a hundred
years, since Einstein's theories of relativity. That is because a fifth force and any particles associated with it are not part
of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Researchers know that there is what they describe as "physics beyond the Standard Model" out there, because the current
theory can't explain lots of things that astronomers observe in space. These include the fact that galaxies are continuing to
accelerate apart after the Big Bang that created the Universe, rather than the expansion slowing down. Scientists say the
acceleration is being driven by an unknown force, called dark energy.

Galaxies are also spinning faster than they should, according to our understanding of how much material is in them.
Researchers believe it's because of invisible particles called dark matter, which again are not part of the Standard Model.
The results have been published in the Journal Physical Review Letters...'

The James Webb Space Telescope was conducting its usual business — staring at objects of scientific interest across the cosmos — when it accidentally captured something hilariously familiar in the distant universe.
Is that a giant question mark?

It sure looks like one. Is the universe trying to tell us something? Or ask us something? Or is it just laughing at us?
Actually, scientists think this may be a pair of galaxies merging together. They just happen to make a question-mark shape, as seen from Webb's perspective.
"Their interactions may have caused the distorted question mark-shape," representatives of the Space Telecope Science Institute told Space.com.

"This may be the first time we've seen this particular object," STScI said. "Additional follow-up would be required to figure out what it is with any certainty."
It could also be a single galaxy with an odd shape, but a merger seems like a good explanation to Matt Caplan, an assistant professor of physics at Illinois State University.
After all, galaxies collide and merge all the time.

"The two distinct features could easily be merging galaxies in the background, with the upper part of the question mark being part of a larger galaxy getting tidally disrupted," Caplan told Space.com. "Given the color of some of the other background galaxies, this doesn't seem like the worst explanation. Despite how chaotic mergers are, double lobed objects with curvy tails extending away from them are very typical."

Beautiful, isn't it? NASA released this image on July 26, saying in a statement that it shows the "antics" of two young stars that are still actively forming.
"Look for them at the center of the red diffraction spikes," NASA wrote in the release. "The stars are buried deeply, appearing as an orange-white splotch."
The pair of stars, known as Herbig-Haro 46/47, are growing as they feed off of gas and dust that surrounds them in a disk. The disk itself is invisible, but its shadow appears in two dark cone-shaped regions next to the stars.
The pink-orange lobes that dominate the picture are material that the stars have been shooting out as they grow over thousands of years.
NASA added that the pair of stars is an "important object to study because it is relatively young – only a few thousand years old. Star systems take millions of years to fully form. Targets like this give researchers insight into how much mass stars gather over time, potentially allowing them to model how our own sun, which is a low-mass star, formed."

This video is interesting to say the least. The first part relates to some of the absolute fraud and military government spending noted by the government accounting office. The title is taken from the cost of two small washers that anyone could buy for around 15 cents each. Even if they were solid gold (or whatever) the cost would never be any where close to 1 million dollars to package and ship (19:56 in the video). There are several other examples in the presentation.

The main goal of the presentation is about some of the advanced aircraft that are known/suggested to exist which I personally believe to be true...Radar tracks of aircraft going 4.2 Mach are the real deal... Due to the heat generated at such speed IMO they are using a thinner yet much larger form fitting replica of the heat shield tiles used on the now defunct space shuttle and have probably developed a better fastener glue to hold them in place.. .

Prop master Barry Bedig was literally born into the biz. Obtaining union status at 25 in 1964 at 20th Century Fox after a stint in the U.S. Navy, Bedig was one of the youngest prop masters in the history of IATSE Local 44, having gained the prerequisite 2,000 hours for membership, then passed the daunting written exam.

He hit the big time in 1972 when he was called for Woody Allen’s “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask.” Bedig’s contributions to the seven-segment film would become his career trademark: detail. He was tasked with creating the Jester’s wand for the “Do Aphrodisiacs Work?” sequence — a handmade prop that featured a lampoon of Allen’s face and became the director’s favorite. It was his orgasmic orb on “Sleeper” a year later that audiences most remember. “Everyone on set tried it,” Bedig notes, “but only Woody made it believable.”

But it was director William Friedkin who defined Bedig’s career. The two share a dozen features spanning 30 years and a mutual commitment to quality, a collaboration that started with “Sorcerer” in 1977. On their second film together, “The Brink’s Job,” Bedig’s input rose to genius level: He brought $2 million in real currency to the set, creating a palpable buzz during the sequence in the bank vault in which actors Peter Falk, Peter Boyle and Paul Sorvino throw wads of the loot into the air. (The cash was well guarded; losses were less than $5,000 during filming — a small price for an idea worth its weight in gold.)

Partnering with a multitude of directors throughout the 1980s, Bedig hit a home run on Barry Levinson’s “The Natural.” Responsible for everything from old-time baseball mitts to Redford’s magical bat, “Wonderboy,” the prop man enlisted Paul Sullivan Jr. (young Roy Hobbs) to wood-burn the lightning logo on the prop — creating a character in its own right.

In 1985, he worked on Friedkin’s “To Live and Die in L.A.,” which withstood jail threats from the government over its depiction of counterfeiting. He also propped character-driven collaborations for Herbert Ross like “Steel Magnolias” and Andy Bergman’s comedic romp “Honeymoon in Vegas,” his exacting style a testament to his depth of craft, translating script and actors’ needs while providing accuracy to period and story.  And he knew to never sell a director on a prop unless he had “more on the truck.”

Bedig, now 79, retired after Friedkin’s “Bug” in 2006. He lives in the San Fernando Valley and enjoys playing casino poker and mentoring his son, Jason, an art department lead man. “Be professional,” he counsels the third-generation filmmaker, “and never leave the set. That’s when things can go wrong!”
