Perhaps it’s because the story originated in sources that are dubious even by conspiracy theory standards. Though even if the Montauk Project itself is fiction — which it surely is — the Central Intelligence Agency’s documented history of disturbing experiments like the ones supposedly carried out at Montauk means that this theory will stay intriguing for the few who know it.

And with the popularity of Stranger Things firmly established, perhaps the Montauk Project’s time in the spotlight might finally be just around the corner.





The Bizarre Origins Of The Montauk Project Story

Both Camp Hero and the Montauk Air Force Station — the Army transferred a portion of Camp Hero to the Air Force after World War II — were said to be the hubs of this paranormal research. Nichols begins by saying that he wrote the book after “recovering” memories of his time as a researcher for the project and then goes on to give an account detailing the interior of the facilities, its procedures, advanced technologies, and numerous paranormal incidents he claims to have witnessed.



After the book’s publication, others started coming forward to say that they, too, had been privy to the illicit research conducted by the Montauk Project, beginning the process of circular reinforcement that is the essential mechanism of a conspiracy theory.

Using new age therapies and practices, Bielek said that he was able to unlock a massive store of repressed memories about his extensive involvement not just in the Philadelphia experiment but in something called the Montauk Project as well and that the two were intertwined.

Suggesting that his memory had been wiped using the CIA’s MK-Ultra techniques to maintain the secrecy of the program, Bielek claimed that his real name was Edward Cameron and that he and his brother Duncan Cameron were crewmembers on the Eldridge in 1943 when they were in their 20s.

Bielek told his story to an audience at the Mutual UFO Network conference in 1990, saying not only that the Philadelphia experiment was real, but that he and his brother were aboard the ship when it happened.



He said that none other than Nikola Tesla himself had engineered the “equipment” that caused the Eldridge to break out of space-time and that it had even opened up a wormhole to the future, which dropped the two brothers in the middle of Montauk’s Camp Hero on August 12, 1983.

“The first experiment was called ‘The Seeing Eye.’ With a lock of a person’s hair or other appropriate object in his hand, Duncan could concentrate on the person and be able to see as if he was seeing through their eyes, hearing through their ears, and feeling through their body. He could actually see through other people anywhere on the planet.”



But more so than remote viewing or any of the other claims Nichols makes, the one about the abduction of young children — some no older than four — to use as subjects in the Montauk Project’s various experiments is surely the most shocking. Nichols referred to these underage abductees as the “Montauk Boys” and said that they were snatched off the street or even taken from their homes.

The aim was to fracture your mind so they could program you… they would change the temperature from very hot to very cold, starve you then over-feed you. I remember being beaten with a wooden pole.

And they loved to hold your head underwater until you nearly drowned. That was effective — it makes a person likely to listen to and obey their ‘rescuer.’ They also used LSD to put our brains into an altered state.”






Swerdlow added that he also observed project staffers sexually abusing the children in order to break them down. Swerdlow even alleged that he and other Montauk Boys were sent to Mars and back to Biblical times via the project’s portals.

“In the early days, as they were perfecting the co-ordinates, a lot of boys were simply lost,” he said. “I still have nightmares about it today. I wasn’t there when the Montauk Chair was shut off but I felt it, like I had suddenly been unplugged from electricity.”

Stranger Things was originally titled Montauk and was heavily inspired by the purported experiments at Camp Hero.

All of the project’s experiments finally came to an end in the early 1980s, Nichols claimed, when things finally went too far even for the researchers responsible.





Nichols claimed that whatever someone sitting in the Montauk Chair envisioned would first appear on a transmitter screen, before being manifested in the real world in either solid or transparent form. The Montauk Project was shut down after Nichols and Duncan Cameron, along with other participants, rebelled against the project when something especially sinister was manifested:

“We finally decided we’d had enough of the whole experiment. The contingency program was activated by someone approaching Duncan while he was in the chair and simply whispering ‘The time is now.’ At this moment, he let loose a monster from his subconscious.

“And the transmitter actually portrayed a hairy monster. It was big, hairy, hungry and nasty. But it didn’t appear underground in the null point. It showed up somewhere on the base. It would eat anything it could find. And it smashed everything in sight.

“Several different people saw it, but almost everyone described a different beast.”

Nichols said they had to destroy all of the equipment in order to remove this creature from existence and send it back to its original dimension, or something to that effect. This is clearly the inspiration for a similar narrative in Stranger Things where Eleven summons a monster which similarly goes on to wreak havoc.






According to Variety, show creators Matt and Russ Duffer were so inspired by the Montauk Project that the original title for their Netflix hit was simply Montauk.

After filmmaker Charlie Kessler filed a lawsuit against the brothers for allegedly plagiarizing his short film, The Montauk Project, the setting was changed from Long Island to the suburbs of Indiana. Regardless of the creative squabble with Kessler, the Netflix show clearly relied heavily on Nichols’ work.



Was There Any Truth To The Montauk Project Story?
According to Nichols, the basement levels of Camp Hero were flooded with cement once all the equipment was destroyed and the project was shut down, with anyone involved in the project having their memories of the project suppressed using MK-Ultra techniques.

The decommissioned facilities at Camp Hero are still standing, however, attracting curious passersby and local townsfolk to this day regardless of what actually happened inside. The SAGE Radar facility has become a notable landmark for boats sailing around the fork of Long Island, so it was left standing when the Air Force shut down the last of its air traffic control operations at the facility in 1984, giving the site an eerie, disquieting presence.





The military, for its part, has disputed that anything like the Montauk Project took place on Long Island. But these sorts of denials often do little to dissuade believers because the U.S. government likewise denied their research into mind control and remote viewing with just as much assuredness as they deny Nichols’ claims — right up until the moment the research documents on MK-Ultra and other similar projects were declassified.

The various versions of the story say that the military successfully developed a technique that rendered the USS Eldridge, stationed at a naval shipyard in Philadelphia, not just invisible to radar but completely invisible to the naked eye. What’s more, the ship was supposedly then transported through a hole in space-time to Norfolk, Virginia, more than 200 miles away.

When the Eldridge reappeared at the Philadelphia shipyard several minutes later, some crew members had been fused into the bulkheads of the ship or had rematerialized inside-out. Those who weren’t were driven insane by the disorientation they experienced while the ship was in a so-called “hyperspace bubble” that existed outside of space-time.

Nearly all of the key details are either disprovable through obvious chronological inconsistencies or violations of the established laws of physics. Moreover, no two retellings of the Philadelphia experiment story are ever the same and people who actually served on the Eldridge in 1943 dispute the story entirely. Nonetheless, this conspiracy theory had been bouncing around for a few decades before it helped give birth to the Montauk Project story.

A Tale Of Two Portals: From The Philadelphia Experiment To The Montauk Project
In 1984, a schlocky, otherwise forgettable B-movie was made about the Philadelphia experiment, aptly titled The Philadelphia Experiment. When a 57-year-old man named Al Bielek saw the movie in 1988, he claimed that he experienced an overwhelming sense of déjà vu.

Using new age therapies and practices, Bielek said that he was able to unlock a massive store of repressed memories about his extensive involvement not just in the Philadelphia experiment but in something called the Montauk Project as well and that the two were intertwined.

Suggesting that his memory had been wiped using the CIA’s MK-Ultra techniques to maintain the secrecy of the program, Bielek claimed that his real name was Edward Cameron and that he and his brother Duncan Cameron were crewmembers on the Eldridge in 1943 when they were in their 20s.

Bielek told his story to an audience at the Mutual UFO Network conference in 1990, saying not only that the Philadelphia experiment was real, but that he and his brother were aboard the ship when it happened.

He said that none other than Nikola Tesla himself had engineered the “equipment” that caused the Eldridge to break out of space-time and that it had even opened up a wormhole to the future, which dropped the two brothers in the middle of Montauk’s Camp Hero on August 12, 1983.

At this point, Bielek’s story becomes convoluted, but the thrust of it is that he and his brother joined up with the Montauk Project, which had grown out of the electromagnetic research of the Philadelphia experiment. Bielek claims he befriended Nichols in the 1970s and that together they developed the “Montauk Chair,” a mind-reading device that was a central component of the entire project and helps provide a window into the specifics of its supposed research.

The Montauk Chair, Psychic Espionage, And Portals Through Time And Space
Preston Nichols details his alleged work on the Montauk Chair in his book, claiming it used electromagnetism to further the psychic powers of whoever sat in it. Duncan Cameron — in a stroke of uncanny coincidence — happened to have substantial psychic abilities, including the ability to manifest objects with his mind using the device.

This may sound familiar to fans of Stranger Things, where a similar device is used by the character Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, to open a portal to the parallel, alternate dimension called the Upside Down. In the Montauk Project lore, Cameron and other project researchers would use the Montauk Chair to similarly open portals through space-time.

Nichols described another experiment in his book that is curiously similar to remote viewing, a paranormal concept that was actually researched by the CIA (and also included in Stranger Things). Nichols writes:

“The first experiment was called ‘The Seeing Eye.’ With a lock of a person’s hair or other appropriate object in his hand, Duncan could concentrate on the person and be able to see as if he was seeing through their eyes, hearing through their ears, and feeling through their body. He could actually see through other people anywhere on the planet.”

But more so than remote viewing or any of the other claims Nichols makes, the one about the abduction of young children — some no older than four — to use as subjects in the Montauk Project’s various experiments is surely the most shocking. Nichols referred to these underage abductees as the “Montauk Boys” and said that they were snatched off the street or even taken from their homes.

According to Nichols, these children were so psychologically broken down by the Montauk Project that most would forget all about their time at Camp Hero for the rest of their lives.

And the stories of the Montauk Boys only became more intriguing when someone started coming forward to confirm them.

At least one man has claimed to similarly “recover” his traumatic memories of the Montauk Project just as Bielek and Nichols had. Stewart Swerdlow, a 52-year-old man living in Michigan, told The Sun in 2017 that he was one of the Montauk Boys Nichols describes and that he and others like him were subjected to horrific abuse:

“When the experiments started they’d target ‘expendable’ boys like orphans, runaways or the children of drug addicts. The kind of kids no one would really come looking for.

The aim was to fracture your mind so they could program you… they would change the temperature from very hot to very cold, starve you then over-feed you. I remember being beaten with a wooden pole.

And they loved to hold your head underwater until you nearly drowned. That was effective — it makes a person likely to listen to and obey their ‘rescuer.’ They also used LSD to put our brains into an altered state.”






Swerdlow added that he also observed project staffers sexually abusing the children in order to break them down. Swerdlow even alleged that he and other Montauk Boys were sent to Mars and back to Biblical times via the project’s portals.

“In the early days, as they were perfecting the co-ordinates, a lot of boys were simply lost,” he said. “I still have nightmares about it today. I wasn’t there when the Montauk Chair was shut off but I felt it, like I had suddenly been unplugged from electricity.”

Stranger Things was originally titled Montauk and was heavily inspired by the purported experiments at Camp Hero.

All of the project’s experiments finally came to an end in the early 1980s, Nichols claimed, when things finally went too far even for the researchers responsible.





Nichols claimed that whatever someone sitting in the Montauk Chair envisioned would first appear on a transmitter screen, before being manifested in the real world in either solid or transparent form. The Montauk Project was shut down after Nichols and Duncan Cameron, along with other participants, rebelled against the project when something especially sinister was manifested:

“We finally decided we’d had enough of the whole experiment. The contingency program was activated by someone approaching Duncan while he was in the chair and simply whispering ‘The time is now.’ At this moment, he let loose a monster from his subconscious.

“And the transmitter actually portrayed a hairy monster. It was big, hairy, hungry and nasty. But it didn’t appear underground in the null point. It showed up somewhere on the base. It would eat anything it could find. And it smashed everything in sight.

“Several different people saw it, but almost everyone described a different beast.”

Nichols said they had to destroy all of the equipment in order to remove this creature from existence and send it back to its original dimension, or something to that effect. This is clearly the inspiration for a similar narrative in Stranger Things where Eleven summons a monster which similarly goes on to wreak havoc.

According to Variety, show creators Matt and Russ Duffer were so inspired by the Montauk Project that the original title for their Netflix hit was simply Montauk.

After filmmaker Charlie Kessler filed a lawsuit against the brothers for allegedly plagiarizing his short film, The Montauk Project, the setting was changed from Long Island to the suburbs of Indiana. Regardless of the creative squabble with Kessler, the Netflix show clearly relied heavily on Nichols’ work.

Was There Any Truth To The Montauk Project Story?
According to Nichols, the basement levels of Camp Hero were flooded with cement once all the equipment was destroyed and the project was shut down, with anyone involved in the project having their memories of the project suppressed using MK-Ultra techniques.

The decommissioned facilities at Camp Hero are still standing, however, attracting curious passersby and local townsfolk to this day regardless of what actually happened inside. The SAGE Radar facility has become a notable landmark for boats sailing around the fork of Long Island, so it was left standing when the Air Force shut down the last of its air traffic control operations at the facility in 1984, giving the site an eerie, disquieting presence.

The military, for its part, has disputed that anything like the Montauk Project took place on Long Island. But these sorts of denials often do little to dissuade believers because the U.S. government likewise denied their research into mind control and remote viewing with just as much assuredness as they deny Nichols’ claims — right up until the moment the research documents on MK-Ultra and other similar projects were declassified.

While most locals likewise consider the Montauk Project story to be a fabrication, they aren’t entirely convinced by the U.S. military’s insistence that the Camp Hero and Air Force station facilities were entirely above-board either.

“No doubt stories have been embellished,” said Paul Monte, the president of the local Chamber of Commerce, “but I don’t doubt that things went on there in the Cold War years. Even today, the base is patrolled and watched… They obviously don’t want people in there even now.”
Filmmaker Christopher Garetano, whose documentary, The Montauk Chronicles, explores the history of the subject, believes that it’s important to consider a few precedents before writing off the story entirely.

“The more I researched the more I’ve begun to believe it is not so ludicrous,” he said. “We know there was military interest in paranormal phenomena. Project Stargate, which began in 1978 and was later declassified, looked at whether psychics could perform ‘remote viewing’ and ‘see’ events from great distances.”

Allegedly conducted on the east end of Long Island during the Cold War, Project Montauk was a secret military experiment to develop psychological warfare with abducted children.
The Montauk Project just might be the motherlode of lesser-known conspiracy theories. Time travel, teleportation, and mind control are all integral to the story, while contact with aliens and the staging of Apollo moon landings add color to an already wild yarn. Yet even after all that and the fact that it inspired the Netflix series Stranger Things, relatively few have even heard of the Montauk Project story.

So how is it that the Montauk Project — which purports that shadowy elements of the U.S. military turned a pair of military installations on the far reaches of Long Island into a hub of illicit, chilling research into the paranormal — has gone overlooked?

Perhaps it’s because the story originated in sources that are dubious even by conspiracy theory standards. Though even if the Montauk Project itself is fiction — which it surely is — the Central Intelligence Agency’s documented history of disturbing experiments like the ones supposedly carried out at Montauk means that this theory will stay intriguing for the few who know it.

And with the popularity of Stranger Things firmly established, perhaps the Montauk Project’s time in the spotlight might finally be just around the corner.

In one clip, what appears to be a large gray figure is seen walking close to an entrance that sent
rumors flying among conspiracy theorists.  'Miami's Bayside Marketplace video shows something
weird: a glowing figure walking through smoke during a wild scene,' one user wrote.

But Miami Police quickly dispelled the rumors and pointed out that the unknown figure was actually
he shadow of someone walking. 'What is seen on this clip is the shadow of someone walking. If you
look at the bottom of the shadow, you can see the person. No creature,' a spokesman said.

The police response at the mall was sparked by a large group of unruly teenagers who were causing
trouble roughly five miles from South Beach. They were setting off fireworks, and it led to a public
panic as some thought there was a shooting going on at the time.
Four teenagers were later arrested over the incident.

Some even claimed the police were responding to reports about aliens and not the teenagers.

There are many new fighter aircraft under development and some are already flying which look and sound on paper to be promising.

I have put this in the metaphysics forum because that is what this is. I will be presenting Biblical references, but will not quote the Bible, or share the verses involved. I will leave it up to the reader to seek these answers out themselves. I will share what I discovered in my quest for truth, and this post is to break down the "religion" aspect, and present what this really is--------Spirituality.

In the book of Acts Jesus had been crucified at this point. His disciples, those who had walked with him and believed Him to be the man that would save Israel, take the thrown as king in the their land, and he would be their new king David, and Jesus would lead them to war to take back the land that was promised to them, and boot out the Roman occupiers.

Even after walking with Jesus they hadnt wrapped their minds around that Jesus' kingdom would not be of this world. It was not until that faithful day they were in an upper room praying (200 ppl in all) and suddenly Tongues of Fire came upon them. These were a spiritual manifistation of the Holy Spirit. When this happened they all starting speaking in different languages.

This was only the beggining, the first step/sign that Jesus had held to his promise to, "not leave them as orphans, but to send them the Holy Spirit." 

After this they went around spreading the good news of the coming of Christ. Some people would hear this good news, believe it, and one of the disciples would lay their hands on them and those people would start to speak in unknown languages and prophecy. Each time....same thing. They'd hear the news of their salvation, that Jesus was the son of God and the messiah, and the belief they had, their faith would allow (invite) the Holy Spirit in, and they would all start speaking in tongues. Every single account.

Once this took place these people were now guided by the Spirit and not by the flesh. Their eyes were opened and they were now able to see past all the lies, all the manipulation, and were now able to see the truth.

The Truth that they were FREE...


Now, modern day times, and the "church" that is in place now. I am speaking from an American stand point, because thats all Ive ever experienced. But, what I found in my search for Truth, and having had taken that road of the modern church, and all their dogmatic laws, human tradition, customs, varying beliefs, and church attendance, it was all a dead end. I had gotten involved deeply with a church for the first time. I was a newbie coming into a small community's church with people who had been members for decades, so to earn my way in with them and become active within the church I scrubbed toilets, swept floors, cut the grass, pressure washed the building, painted, cleaned and waxed pues, and any little job that church needed. I was a poor man and did not have much to put into the collection plate, so I did things like this to help the church. Needless to say, none of this earned me any position in their church. I became the janitor instead to them.

After a couple years of this, going to church every sunday am, pm, and wednesdays, i honestly felt no closer to God.


This did not sit right with me, so I dug deeper.

I started Biblical studies and ministry college next. I thought to myself, what happened to me was wrong, and I wanted to start a church that this didnt happen in. So, I studied.

I had ended up getting extremely ill and ended up being unable to keep pace with my classes and was forced to quit. I was in and out of hospitals and was spending a lot of my time laid up in bed unable to do anything productive, so I continued my studies on my own. At this point I had read the entire Bible many many times. Yet, somehow I kept feeling something was missing. I kept noticing holes in the story. As well, as references to other scriptures that were nowhere to be found in the King James Bible. I called these verses "bread crumbs" because they were a trail left behind that ended up pointing me to reading all the books (scrolls) that King James had omitted.

The more of those I read the more I started to see why King James banned all those books...

The whole Truth was in them.

You see, when one looks for God, and only having the 66 books of the KJV as your guide, we are easily controlled thru the "law." Fear of being tossed in hell is a pretty good motivator for people to do what they are told. 

Now, i cannot sit here and share everything I learned from all those other lost books. What I can say is, once you read it all, you will see that what we have in the KJV of the Word of God is a smidget of the story. A drop in the bucket of the whole truth. I also cannot share that whole truth with you. It is something that each individual needs to find for themselves-------and we need a guide. Just not a human guide.

This is what the Holy Spirit is for...

You see, once a person is baptized in the Holy Spirit and he comes upon them, and the Tongues of Fire being the first sign the Holy Spirit has entered a person, almost immediately after that God starts to reveal many many things to you. These things have to come slowly over time. Our human brains could not take all that Truth at one time. So we experience life, but with the Holy Spirit teaching us things thru those experiences, and thru the Word of God. You start to experience major synchronicity, and Our eyes start to truly open. 

After I had gone thru this, the first thing I said to God was (my first official request), "show me the lies."

That is exactly what happened. Over the next couple of years it was if all the lies I had been fed over the years started to come into the Light and become exposed. I was questioning everything. I had to unlearn everything that had been taught to me. I had grown up in church. There was never a time I didnt believe in God. But I had always questioned His power over and in my life. That was until my baptism.

What i eventually came to learn was what the true purpose of the human church (organized religion) actaully was.

It was a block... to keep people from actually "entering into Gods Kingdom." They will lead us to religion, but it is a personal relationship with God, thru his Word, and thru His Spirit, and in the faith of the Messiah (His Son) we need. Its as if this church will lead you to the promised land, show you and let you see it from a distance, but never allow you to enter. Moses is a great example of this, and the road of religion, and where that actually leads to. 


The Truth of the gospel is, we are no longer to see and live thru the flesh. We needed Gods divine help to break us free from the mountains of lies we are fed. No human can lead us past these lies. Only God can reveal these Truths. This is why the Bible says that we no longer need teachers, or we are not to call anyone on earth our "Father" (different from dad), or call anyone our "rabbi" (teacher). Unlocking the truth is a long arduous journey. One does not find these truths in an afternoon, week month or year. It is a constant learning thru experience and knowledge of Gods Word. 

The Tongues of Fire is simply the first sign. Not a sign someone asks for in a manner like, asking for it so God can prove Himself to you. It is when we already have the absolute faith in Gods divine help in our lives. It is only when we are ready in this way, and have faith (the faith is key) in Gods ability to work thru us in supernatural ways. We have to fully give ourselves over. We have to realize that we have no power in this world and in this flesh when we are doing things on our own strength knowledge and abilities when it comes to Gods work. Sure, we can accomplish a lot. Just look at all the amazing things we humans have built and created all on our own. I myself have built houses and huge buildings. I can go to someones home and think to myself, "I built that." But we are still limited to our own selves.

We need that Divine Help to truly see.

Now, what I have learned about the actual Tongues of Fire, or as some people know it as, "speaking in tongues."

We all know the importance of language, words and the vibrations we produce when we speak. If, and when a language is spoken that is not a human language, but instead, a heavenly language; a language spoken by both angels and demons alike, it sends out a unique vibration. If someone were to start speaking in this angel language then whatever demon is around will hear it, and take notice, because it is not something spoken by humans. It even has a supernatural vibration to it that spans the globe. Once this language is spoken every evil spirit (demon) comes near and listens. 

I have witnessed this. I have witnessed God calling out names and giving instructions. I have heard him command both angels and demons. I have heard him command angles to do His Good Work, and I have heard him warn, chastise and rebuke, and cast out demons; sending them away. This is not something I witnessed with my human eyes. It is something I witnessed thru my minds eye; the third eye.

I have also learned there is a language that only the angels can understand. So when orders are given the demons are ignorant (in the dark) as to what God has instructed. There is also a language that only God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit can understand. I have witnessed all of this.

God even has other names (for himself) that can only be spoken thru these languages. When this name is spoken it is like an invisible, very powerful wave of energy goes throughout our entire universe.

These are things I truly wish I could describe to you, but these are things one can only truly know or understand through actually experiencing it themselves. We just don't have the words to describe these things since all we know are worldly things. Our experiences in this world, even the most powerful and groundbreaking things fail in comparison to these supernatural experiences. The only word i can use is "awesome" to describe any of it.

I am starting to wake up to the knowledge of casting out demons is done thru the Tongues of Fire. I am starting to believe that is one of the main purposes for it. As well as a sign.


Okay, now its time for my disclaimer portion. I know that this is a topic that is more debated than the book of revelation, and more misunderstood than anything else; and this always insights arguments. This is the one subject that is never talked about. Most people know of Jesus, know of armageddon, know of hell, know of a second coming, but very few really know about the Tongues of Fire; i.e. speaking in tongues. So, after I write this I will be fading off and into my next step in life. I know, from experience, that this will destroy all credibility I have here. But, this is something I have had on my heart to share with the world for a long time. I have observed this crowd long enough now to know that the minds here are open enough to hear me, and not slam me for my beliefs. Although, im expecting a lot of backlash. But the message is more important than the messenger, so I have finally put it out to an audience I believe would hear me. Im not saying to just believe me. I am simply showing the Door and planting this seed in this garden.

I am also not saying someone isnt saved, or a child of God if they havent had a visit from the Tongues of Fire. I am also not saying, "dont go to church." If your heart leads you there, go! Seek God! I have heard of people finding God in church. But I have also heard of people finding God in ditches and dumpsters. It is not a matter of being in the right place. We can find God in the exact spot we are sitting in now. Just know the church is merely a door, and someones church attendance is fleshly, not spiritual. Seek God in His Spirit. That is the completeness of it. Know the Father. Know the Son (which this is where most are), and know the Spirit (this is the intent of my post).

I need to move forward and I will be moving on in life. I'll still be lurking. But, A new chapter is beginning for me, and I see which direction I need to head in. Unfortunately I need to get my head out of the thoughts and problems we discuss here. Its me, not you. lol Ive become too dependent on this, and need to explore new territories. This just distracts me. I wanted to make this my final note. I didn't really put this up to discuss it, merely to sow the seed in some minds. If there is anyone out there, who is fervently seeking God, and still feel like something is missing then this post is for you. Seek these things out for yourself.

Morgan Robertson once wrote a novel titled Futility. It was not particularly good literature, yet it had one unusual characteristic—one that almost defies the imagination.

It told the story of a fictitious ship, an ocean liner made up in Robertson’s vivid imagination, that was the very cutting edge of technology, considered unsinkable and therefore carrying too few lifeboats for her passengers and crew. In the novel, this ship gets underway for her maiden voyage and, on a cold April night, strikes an iceberg and is lost.

Many likely will recognize that this is remarkably similar to the true story of the sinking of the Titanic. She too struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage on a cold April night. She too was considered unsinkable and carried too few lifeboats. Both ships had three screws and two masts. Both were rated to carry 3,000 passengers. Both vessels were struck by icebergs on their starboard sides.

Robertson’s fictitious ship was 800 feet long, had 19 watertight compartments, and was making 25 knots when she struck the iceberg.

The Titanic was 882.5 feet long, had 16 watertight compartments, and was making 22.5 knots when she struck the iceberg.

One might think Robertson was stealing his storyline—except for the amazing fact that he wrote his novel in 1898, and the Titanic did not sail until 1912!

And if all those coincidences were not enough, one final fact is that Robertson had named his imaginary ship . . . the Titan!

There is something in human nature that begs for some explanation beyond coincidence. There is something more satisfying in knowing there is a reason—however unscientific—for an occurrence or series of occurrences, rather than accepting such things as random, meaningless coincidence, beyond any laws or control. Such explanations are classed as superstitions and, while this desire for explication is not limited to those who go down to the sea in ships, sailors are often seen as a superstitious lot.

Through the centuries many legends have become part of nautical lore. The Flying Dutchman is said to roam the seven seas with a ghost crew, the appearance of dolphins in a ship’s bow wave when she is departing on a cruise is said to be an omen of good luck, and both mermaids and sirens have conflicting roles in a sailor’s fortune. While these beliefs are no more real than bad luck occurring on Friday the 13th, there are times when unusual occurrences are difficult to dismiss as mere coincidence. And some of these hard-to-accept coincidences are part of the history of the U.S. Navy.

Collisions

During the hotly contested struggle for the Solomon Islands during World War II, when Japanese and American soldiers and Marines were engaged in heavy fighting on Guadalcanal and some of the other islands in that chain, the Imperial Japanese Navy supported their forces ashore by making frequent sorties down a water passage among the many islands that soon became known as “the Slot.” These sorties—dubbed the “Tokyo Express” by the Americans—led to frequent engagements with U.S. ships in the area and resulted in a number of major naval engagements that proved to be key components in the ongoing campaign.

On the night of 1 August 1943, 15 U.S. torpedo boats engaged four Tokyo Express destroyers. Unlike many other nights, neither side suffered any losses in the fighting, but one of the American PT boats was unfortunate enough to be lying in the path of the Amagiri, one of the marauding enemy destroyers. It was a pitch-black night, and neither vessel’s captain was aware of the other’s presence in the darkened Slot until it was too late.

The fast-moving Japanese ship crashed into the diminutive PT boat with great force. The smaller vessel never stood a chance; she was cut in two and her fuel tanks exploded. Two of the crew were killed and several others were badly injured in the collision and the resulting conflagration as the boat’s fuel ignited and burned furiously.

The Japanese destroyer continued down the Slot, and the survivors were left in the dark waters to fend for themselves. And fend they did. With the fitter men helping the more seriously injured, these PT sailors swam to one of the many islands that make up the Solomons archipelago.

They guessed correctly that no one knew they were there. The crews of the other boats out in the Slot that night had seen the explosion and assumed all hands had been lost. The survivors, knew that they—particularly the injured—could survive for only a limited time in the inhospitable jungle on the island. The destroyed PT boat’s captain devised several plans to try to get them rescued, including his swimming out into the Slot on several nights in hopes of getting the attention of U.S. vessels on patrol.

The plan that ultimately worked, causing them to be rescued after a week, was a message carved on a coconut shell and delivered to the U.S. forces by friendly natives on one of the other islands in the area.
The captain, a young lieutenant from a wealthy family in Boston, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism, and barely more than 17 years later was elected president of the United States. On his desk in the Oval Office, John F. Kennedy kept a small plaque that quoted a Breton fisherman’s prayer: “O God, thy sea is so great, and my boat is so small.”

Kennedy and ten of his crew escaped death that dark night in the Solomons’ Slot, but he could not escape death’s summons a second time when, in the glaring daylight of a Dallas morning, he was assassinated on 22 November 1963.

To honor the felled president and former sailor, an aircraft carrier was named the USS John F. Kennedy and commissioned on 7 September 1968. Seven years later, in an ironic event eerily similar to the collision of the PT boat and the destroyer, the aircraft carrier bearing Kennedy’s name was involved in a terrible collision with the cruiser Belknap. Reminiscent of the ensuing conflagration in the Slot in 1943, aviation fuel poured down from the carrier’s flight-deck refueling stations into the cruiser’s superstructure, causing a horrific fire that burned most of the night and melted the Belknap’s superstructure. Heroic efforts saved the ship, but six Belknap sailors and one from the Kennedy died, and many others were seriously injured.



The coincidence of collision was bizarre in its own right, but even more amazing was that out of 365 possible days in a year that the collision between the USS Belknap and John F. Kennedy could have occurred, this disaster took place on the night of 22 November 1975—on the twelfth anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Jinx?

In 1797, when the frigate USS United States was commissioned, she was the first American warship to be launched under the naval provisions of the Constitution of the new nation that had won its independence from Great Britain just a few years before. Built in time to participate in the Quasi-War with France, she captured a number of French privateers and recaptured several American ships that had been taken by the French.

In the War of 1812, the United States won new glory not only by defeating the frigate HMS Macedonian, but also actually bringing the captured prize back to New York City, ultimately to serve in the U.S. Navy as the USS Macedonian. The capture of a British warship created a huge sensation, raising American spirits at a time when the war was not going well on other fronts.

Such a celebrated beginning seemed to promise a glorious career for the ship bearing the name of her country. But then her luck changed, and she was destined for an ignominious end.



When America declared war on Algiers in February 1815, the United States headed for the Mediterranean to fight the so-called Barbary pirates of North Africa. But the United States never participated in anything more notable than routine patrols, an inglorious comedown for the famous frigate that had once prevailed against the Royal Navy.

In the years that followed, the United States would go in and out of service, never seeing  anything like the action of her early days. Herman Melville—later the renowned author of Moby Dick and other classic novels—sailed in her for a time. Whether it was more a reflection of Melville or the ship he served in is a matter of conjecture, but he had little of a positive nature to report when he chronicled his experiences in his novel White-Jacket.

From 1849 until 1861, the United States rotted away in Norfolk, Virginia, and might well have ended her days that way except for the outbreak of the Civil War. On 20 April 1861, the Navy Yard at Norfolk was captured by Confederate troops. Because they were desperate for vessels in any kind of condition, they repaired the captured ship and commissioned her the CSS United States.  “Confederate States Ship United States” seemed a bit odd to many, so she was often referred to as the CSS Confederate States instead. When the Confederates were forced to abandon the Navy Yard in May 1862, they decided to sink her in the middle of the Elizabeth River to form an obstruction to oncoming Union vessels. Once Norfolk was again under Federal control, she was raised and towed to the Navy Yard. There she remained until December 1865 when she was broken up and her wood sold for scrap. It was a sad ending for a ship whose beginnings had been so promising and who bore so important a name, but no one seemed to have given much thought to the matter at the time and for a long time after.

Then, on 25 September 1920, the keel was laid for a new Lexington-class battle cruiser in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, and the new ship was given the name United States. It seemed for a while that the old meaningful name was to be resurrected.

But world politics intervened, and on 8 February 1922, with the ship barely 12 percent complete, construction was halted in compliance with the Treaty for the Limitation of Naval Armaments. Construction of the new United States was halted according to the terms of the treaty. The unfinished hulk of the would-be United States was sold for scrap the following year. The treaty, which had been signed by the United States and other world naval powers with the hope of preventing future war, was itself scrapped, ultimately leading to World War II, the greatest sea war in history.

In the spring of 1949, the keel was laid for another United States. This one was to be a “super carrier,” designed to meet the challenges of the developing superpower confrontation with the Soviet Union by its ability to launch long-range aircraft equipped with atomic weapons. This time internal politics intervened. Just five days after her keel-laying, work was terminated at the order of the Secretary of Defense, who had decided that aircraft carriers were no longer needed—that Air Force bombers alone could fight the Soviet Union should war come. This proved folly when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950 and aircraft carriers proved essential in avoiding a catastrophic defeat and in fighting the subsequent war. But the would-be carrier United States remained a casualty and would not be built. Talk of a jinx began to circulate.

These superstitious rumblings had not yet quieted when once again, in November 1993, yet another United States was laid down. This one was to be an even bigger, more capable ship—a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. But 14 months after construction was begun, the decision was made to rename the ship the USS Harry S. Truman, to honor the 33rd President of the United States. There was nothing sinister or deliberate in thwarting plans for another United States, and few questioned the wisdom of naming a ship after the Commander-in-Chief who had first gone to war with Communism, but for those who subscribe to such things, it was not a great leap to imagine that this important name seemed jinxed. Yet another United States had failed to materialize!

There is no denying that to this day—since the original frigate with the glorious beginning and sad end—there never has been another ship named the United States in the U.S. Navy. Blaming a jinx may not be logical, but it certainly seems to fit this situation. 

There is nothing new here. Far from it. Among the most prevalent legends of the sea is the idea of a jinxed or cursed ship, a vessel that is destined for bad luck, either by chance or from some supernatural cause. Tales from the biblical story of Jonah to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s classic poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” reinforce the idea in our culture. And modern sailors point to an imagined Kennedy-family jinx as the cause behind the Kennedy-Belknap collision.

The Triangle

There is an area of the Atlantic Ocean off the Southeastern United States popularly known as the “Bermuda Triangle,” or sometimes the “Devil’s Triangle.” These waters have a long-standing reputation for mysterious happenings, including the disappearance of vessels and aircraft without explanation and often without a trace.

No nautical charts show this area under either popular name, and the U.S. Board of Geographic Names does not officially recognize it, but the apexes of this mythical triangle are generally accepted to be Bermuda, Florida, and Puerto Rico. 

While no one has ever been able to prove any direct correlation, there are some characteristics of the Bermuda Triangle that may be worth noting. The unpredictable Caribbean-Atlantic weather pattern in this area might well play a role; sudden local thunderstorms and waterspouts frequently occur in this area. The topography of the ocean floor varies from extensive shoals around the islands to some of the deepest marine trenches in the world. With the interaction of strong currents over the triangle’s many reefs, the topography is in a state of constant flux, and new navigational hazards can develop rather quickly.

Whether there are scientific explanations for these strange events, or they are merely the kind of coincidence that myths are made of, the Bermuda Triangle was the scene of two incidents involving the U.S. Navy that have served to enhance the legendary stature of this area.

One of those incidents occurred during World War I, known at the time as the Great War. Because this was the age when many ships were coal-fired, Navy colliers (coal carriers—forerunners to today’s oilers) played an essential role in the war at sea by ensuring that adequate supplies of coal were available where needed. The USS Cyclops was one such collier and, soon after the United States entered the war in 1917, she was tasked with fueling allied British ships operating in South American waters.

Early in 1918, the Cyclops was in Norfolk, Virginia, when she received orders to carry coal to Brazil and then return to Baltimore with a load of manganese ore. On the return trip she headed through the Triangle en route to a scheduled arrival in Baltimore on 13 March. On board were 306 people, including her crew; an American consul general; and 72 other passengers, mostly sailors on leave, changing duty stations, or headed home to muster out of the Navy.

The Cyclops never arrived. In those days of limited communications and rather primitive tracking systems, it took some time before anyone realized the ship was overdue. On 23 March, the Navy launched a search operation to find the missing ship. All the ships that could be spared fanned out over the Bermuda Triangle looking for the missing collier. The search continued until 1 June, when Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Roosevelt at last declared the Cyclops officially lost and all embarked personnel legally deceased.

Not a single trace of the 542-foot long, 20,000-ton ship and her 306 passengers and crew has ever been found. The Navy followed up with an investigation that spanned a decade and is recorded in some 1,500 pages of interviews and testimony in the National Archives. Because the nation was at war at the time, an obvious possible explanation for the ship’s disappearance was that she had been sunk by a German submarine; but after the war, German records were searched, and nothing was found that indicated that any such attack took place. Many other theories were officially investigated and many more have been offered—including mutiny, improper stowage of the manganese ore, and a giant octopus—but to this day, the mystery of the disappearance of USS Cyclops has never been solved.



The Navy again found itself faced with a mysterious disappearance in the infamous Bermuda Triangle shortly after the end of World War II. At about 1400 on the afternoon of 5 December 1945, Flight 19—consisting of five Avenger torpedo bombers—departed from the U.S. Naval Air Station at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on an advanced overwater navigational training flight.

In charge of the flight and piloting one of the five aircraft was a senior qualified flight instructor with extensive experience. The other planes were piloted by qualified pilots with between 350 and 400 hours of flight time, of which at least 55 hours were in this type of aircraft. The weather conditions over the area covered by the track of the navigational problem were considered average for training flights of this nature, though there were a few thunderstorms reported in the area.

At about 1600, a radio message between the flight leader and another pilot was intercepted by a shore-based radio station. The message indicated that the aircraft were apparently experiencing some kind of compass malfunction and the instructor was uncertain of his position and could not determine the direction of the Florida coast. Attempts to establish further communications on the training frequency were unsatisfactory because of interference from Cuban radio stations and a great deal of static caused by atmospheric conditions. All radio contact was lost before the exact nature of the trouble, or the location of the flight, could be determined.

All available facilities in the immediate area were called upon to locate the missing aircraft and help them return to base. These efforts were unsuccessful. No trace of the missing airplanes or their crews was found even though an extensive search operation was launched and continued for five days. On the evening of 10 December weather conditions deteriorated to the point that further efforts became unduly hazardous, and the search was terminated.

To further compound the mysteriousness of this unexplained disappearance of all five aircraft (and add to the legend of the “Devil’s Triangle”), a Navy patrol plane, which was dispatched at approximately 1930 on 5 December to search for the missing torpedo bombers, also disappeared without a trace.

In a further twist of fate, in 1991 a salvage ship discovered five Avengers in 600 feet of water off the coast of Florida. It appeared that Flight 19 had been located at last. But subsequent examination of those planes showed that they were not the same aircraft that had taken off as Flight 19, so the final resting place of the Flight 19 planes and their crews remains one of the many secrets of the Bermuda Triangle.

In 1977, the classic movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind offered an explanation for the disappearance of Flight 19 that is not likely to find its way into official Navy records, since it involved space aliens. It is likely, however, that reasoned theories and fanciful explanations of the strange happenings in the Bermuda Triangle will continue for as long as there are unanswered questions and odd coincidences. Such strange but true occurrences have always added to the mystery of the sea.

In my own experience, I was the officer of the deck of an aircraft carrier during a night transit of the Bermuda Triangle. The night was clear and the sea placid, though we could see several thunderstorms visually and on radar in the area. At about midnight, the lookouts on the signal bridge reported a cluster of dim lights dead ahead. My junior officer of the deck and I also could see them, but only through our binoculars. The radar display was empty. The possibility of wooden-hulled fishing boats came to mind, but the cluster of lights did not change in direction or in luminosity as we continued on track. From his post at the chart table behind me, the quartermaster of the watch said, “This is the Bermuda Triangle, Sir!” which brought a nervous laugh from other members of the watch team. 

After several minutes passed with no change, I decided to alter course to avoid these lights, whatever they were. As I reached for the sound-powered phone to inform the captain who was asleep in his sea cabin, someone emerged from the ship’s interior onto one of the catwalks edging the starboard side of the flight deck forward of the “island” superstructure. Apparently, the “light locker” that was supposed to prevent such things malfunctioned, allowing a momentary burst of white light to emerge from the opening, illuminating one of the ship’s 35-foot whip antennas. During flight operations, these long antennas were lowered into a horizontal position—looking like cat’s whiskers along the edge of the flight deck—to prevent them from interfering with the aircraft being launched from the forward catapults. Because they were more efficient in an upright position, they were routinely raised to a vertical position when the ship was not conducting flight operations.

Seeing the antenna almost directly ahead of the bridge windows, I also could see that the tip of it was glowing with an eerie green light. Apparently, the electrical activity produced by the storms in the area was causing all of the whip antennas along the edge of the flight deck to glow with “St. Elmo’s Fire,” a natural phenomenon sometimes appearing in the rigging of ships that also has provoked many superstitious tales among sailors over the centuries. I now realized that those glowing antenna tips were the source of the lights we thought we were seeing dead ahead.

I put the phone back in its cradle, grateful that I had not yet woken the captain. I had very nearly maneuvered my ship to avoid our own whip antennas—something that would have had no serious consequences but would surely have caused me a significant degree of embarrassment and would have given my shipmates much to discuss in the wardroom and on the mess decks!

Although there was clearly a science-based explanation for what happened that night, there was no question that I—and I’m pretty certain I was not alone among the members of the watch team—had not been immune to a measure of unease as we watched those eerie lights looming ahead of us in the Bermuda Triangle.

The Mythical Shipmate

Superstition will likely remain tucked away in the sailor’s sea bag to emerge when strange happenings seem to defy logic. Its power can be surprising. Despite the U.S. Navy’s essential role in World War II, ships were sometimes delayed in getting underway for important missions by many hours—even an entire day—to avoid getting underway on a Friday because a long-standing superstition warned that doing so invited catastrophe. The origin of that aversion has several explanations, but the one most commonly cited is that Christ was crucified on a (“good”) Friday.

Some superstitions have their roots in truth. The old saying “Red sky at morning, sailor take warning; red sky at night, sailor’s delight” has some meteorological basis. And, while there is no science in the belief that whistling on board ship can create headwinds or even storms, the taboo against whistling may have stemmed from the practical concern that mutineers might be using whistles to communicate among themselves.  

As long as strange but true things continue to occur, there will be legends and myths, whispers of jinxes, and tales of the supernatural. And, in truth, this is not altogether surprising in light of one final factor. Anyone who has been to sea and peered into its mysterious depths cannot help but wonder what lies below. Any sailor who has watched the changing moods of the sea, or seen the dancing stars of luminescence in a ship’s wake, or heard the ominous wail of the wind in a squall, will be tempted to think of powers beyond those of simple physics. The sailor’s realm is a hauntingly beautiful and sometimes ominous place to live and work and dream and wonder.
