They make a big deal out of this discovery and it is considering the preserved wood but for my 2 cents worth people were building water craft after they saw the first log floating.

In 2021, archaeologists diving in Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin, spotted something unusual jutting out of the mud: a wooden canoe. At first, they assumed it was a lucky, isolated find. But as they continued to sweep the lakebed, they just kept finding more canoes.
It turned out to be a massive archaeological jackpot. Over the last four years, researchers have identified 16 wooden canoes, transforming our understanding of the area. This place was a prehistoric “parking lot” where Indigenous people docked their boats for thousands of years.
A Prehistoric Marina
The fleet found in Lake Mendota is striking in its diversity and age. The vessels range from 700 to 5,200 years old. To put that in perspective, the oldest canoe was carved from red oak around 3000 B.C.—roughly the same time ancient Sumerians were inventing writing and centuries before the Egyptians laid the first stone of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
“Constructed of red oak, it is now the oldest dugout canoe recorded from the Great Lakes region,” Tamara Thomsen, Wisconsin’s state maritime archaeologist, told Fox News Digital. She notes that it is likely the third-oldest canoe ever found in eastern North America.
Archaeologists believe this site served as a busy transit hub. Ancient travelers would paddle across the lake, dock their canoes near a network of trails, and continue their journey on foot. Today, the canoes sit under about 8 meters (26 feet) of water, but millennia ago, this spot was a shallow shoreline about 1.2 meters deep, ideal for parking a boat.
“It’s a parking spot that’s been used for millennia, over and over,” Thomsen said in an interview with the Associated Press.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the discovery isn’t just the age of the boats, but the tech used to build them.
Indigenous shipwrights carved these vessels from red and white oak, ash, elm, cottonwood, and basswood. Oak is a surprisingly heavy choice for a boat because it tends to absorb water and sink. However, Thomsen and her team found evidence of ancient “bioengineering.”

“The canoes remind us how long our people have lived in this region and how deeply connected we remain to these waters and lands,” said Bill Quackenbush, the Ho-Chunk Nation’s tribal preservation officer.
When oak trees are wounded, they produce balloon-like structures called tyloses to seal off their own vascular system and prevent rot. The researchers believe Indigenous craftspeople intentionally damaged the trees while they were still standing to trigger this reaction. This made the wood more buoyant and resistant to rot before they even began carving.
“They weren’t just walking through a forest and decided that was the tree they were going to take,” Thomsen told the Wisconsin State Journal. “They were selectively managing trees that were probably near the shoreline.”

Preserving the Past
So far, researchers have extracted two of the canoes. They are currently being stabilized with polyethylene glycol and freeze-dried at Texas A&M University to prevent the wood from disintegrating. The plan is to display one of these ancient vessels at the new Wisconsin History Center when it opens in 2027.
The remaining 14 canoes will stay where they have rested for centuries: preserving their history in the lakebed.
For the Indigenous communities involved, this is more than an archaeological dig—it’s a reaffirmation of presence. “The canoes remind us how long our people have lived in this region,” said Bill Quackenbush, the Ho-Chunk Nation’s tribal preservation officer. “Protecting and preserving this knowledge ensures that the next generation understands where we come from and why these stories matter.”

Been seeing bugs dying out on the radar as I'm sure everyone has. 75% reduction in population in something like 16 years.

I never really thought about it, but yes my car isn't covered in bugs anymore. I have noticed the spiders are gone from the garden, but that could be from the birds. The worst for me was driving through a swarm of bees and putting my wipers on, instantly reduced to zero visibility, the honey makes a mess. I don't see many bees any more and have not had to run and close windows in years when a swarm comes by.

In my case it's not a big mystery, everything has been flattened and turned into suburbia. Houses are not built with gardens any more. Small plots. Of course the excuse is 'pack up and go', modern lifestyles. It's got nothing to do with houses being fucking unfordable and business buying up plots of land and building flats! The rich get richer while the planet cries and people live dead lives. Grey is a popular paint scheme on houses. All the cars are white or grey. I mean come on! Even entertainment is lifeless! It's all statements and activism hiding behind faux entertainment that lacks imagination and inspiration. How stupid are you to think activism or hate filled politico is good creative energy and that's all we get.

Everyone of us who have grown up with a loving caring family should thank our good fortune and realize how lucky we have been.

White House border czar Tom Homan on Dec. 7 said more than 60,000 children who were illegally smuggled into the United States have been located by the Trump administration and that some were rescued from dire situations, including sex trafficking and forced labor.
In an interview with the Fox News show “Fox & Friends” on Dec. 7, Homan said that the previous administration “lost track of 300,000” children who were “smuggled into” the United States, saying some of those children were released to ”unvetted sponsors.”
Since President Donald Trump took office in January, 62,000 children who were taken into the United States had been found as of Dec. 5, he said.
Homan said that “many of them are in sex trafficking,” “are in forced labor,” or are being abused.
He also said, “[I] can’t discuss some of the mistreatment we found out about.”
Homan said that Trump committed to doing everything possible “to find every one of these children.” He did not provide more details about the rescued children but said that the administration “saved over 62,000 children’s lives.”

A statement released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Dec. 5 stated that the number of border encounters is continuing to decline; 30,367 total encounters were reported to the agency nationwide in November. That’s down slightly from the 30,573 encounters nationwide in October, it said.
Border Patrol also said that it has released “zero illegal aliens” into the country for seven consecutive months.
In December 2024, the final month of President Joe Biden’s administration, there were more than 301,981 encounters at the southwest border sector by Border Patrol agents, according to data from the agency. There were about 11,600 such encounters in September 2025, the most recent month for which data are available.
“Our focus is unwavering: secure the border, enforce the law, and protect this nation,” CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott said in the Dec. 5 statement. “These numbers reflect the tireless efforts of our agents and officers who are delivering results that redefine border security. We’re not slowing down. We’re setting the pace for the future.”
The Border Patrol efforts and the mass deportation of illegal immigrants are in line with campaign promises made by Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign. And since taking office, he has signed multiple executive orders and memorandums, including declaring an emergency at the U.S.–Mexico border, designating several criminal gangs as terrorist organizations, and launching federal operations targeting illegal immigrants in Chicago, Los Angeles, and other cities.
The Supreme Court agreed on Dec. 5 to hear a case challenging the legality of an executive order issued by Trump that sought to end birthright citizenship. Multiple lower courts have ruled against the January order, which would bar children born in the United States to parents who are in the country illegally from automatically becoming citizens.
Democrats have been broadly critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. A House lawmaker introduced a bill in May that would prohibit the use of federal funds to enforce any order barring birthright citizenship. At the state level, multiple governors and mayors have also been opposed the federal deportation operations.
Meanwhile, in the past week, the Trump administration paused all immigration applications, including applications for green cards, for people from 19 countries that are also subject to a travel ban imposed earlier this year, as part of sweeping immigration changes in the wake of the shooting of two National Guard troops.
A policy memo issued on the website of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency tasked with processing and approving all requests for immigration benefits, said the policy applies to citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
The Epoch Times contacted the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees border- and immigration-related matters, for additional comment but did not hear back by publication time.
