Conducted by researchers at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, the analysis probed eight AI models including OpenAI's ChatGPT search and Google's Gemini, finding that overall, they gave an incorrect answer to more than 60 percent of queries. 

It should tell you something that the most accurate model to emerge from these tests, Perplexity from Perplexity AI, still answered 37 percent of its questions incorrectly. The village idiot award, meanwhile, goes to Elon Musk's chatbot Grok 3, which was wrong a staggering 94 percent of the time. Impressively bad.

"While traditional search engines typically operate as an intermediary, guiding users to news websites and other quality content, generative search tools parse and repackage information themselves, cutting off traffic flow to original sources," the authors warned. "These chatbots' conversational outputs often obfuscate serious underlying issues with information quality."

By now, of course, the proclivity of large language models to lie or wrongly report information is well documented. But that hasn't stopped tech companies from trying to supplant the traditional web search, with some releasing versions of their existing chatbots tailor-made to do just that, like ChatGPT search. Google has even debuted an "AI Mode" that only shows Gemini summaries instead of web links.

This latest study quantifies why this might be a bad idea. It was conducted by choosing ten random articles each from a pool of twenty publications, ranging from The Wall Street Journal to TechCrunch. In what should've been a softball, the chatbots were asked to identify an article's headline, its publisher, its publication date, and its URL. To make things even easier, the researchers made sure to only choose article excerpts that returned the original source within the first three results of an old-fashioned Google search.

In addition to showing the AI models were wrong over half the time, these tests exposed other idiot tendencies. A classic one? Passing off their dubious wisdom "with alarming confidence," by either not qualifying their responses or failing to decline questions they didn't know the answer to. 

This lines up with other research documenting how AI models would rather hallucinate — or make up — answers instead of admitting they're out of their depth. Maybe that's because a policy of honesty would betray just how useless the AI models can be; Microsoft's Copilot, for example, declined more questions than it answered, the researchers said.

The AI search tools were also terrible at citing their sources. ChatGPT Search linked to the wrong source article nearly 40 percent of the time, and straight up didn't bother to provide one in another 21 percent of cases. That's bad from a fact-checking point of view, and just as grim for publishers, who will be denied even the chance of getting traffic from an AI model that's scraped their content. Bodes well for the survival of our online media economy, doesn't it?

I started this thread over on the other side and wanted to share it here as well.



I have noticed that many people have a comprehension problem that I believe is due in large part to an online information overload. Apparently, the average attention span for any subject online is around eight seconds. This is what I refer to as the goldfish effect because goldfish have a nine-second attention span.

So people will glance over the title of a topic and make a predetermined judgement about the content. They quickly presuppose whatever might actually be in an article, blog, or post, to save time for the higher-priority subjects where they can use up the full eight seconds of their attention span.



This isn't just something going on with people's online interactions, this happens in daily real-time conversations as well. Too often I have had people who interrupt me in mid-sentence and insert their predetermined assumptions like they can read minds. They are in such a hurry to reach a conclusion they don't listen for much more than half of that eight seconds before they have analyzed your partial statement, figured out the rest before you have finished, and have come to a conclusion. I've been interrupted so badly in this way as to just bow out and keep my actual thoughts to myself, as everyone seems to know what I'm saying before I even say it. Basically, no one takes the time to listen (or read) and understand what other people say because the data stream isn't condensed and fast enough.



This behavior leads people down avenues of skewed logic based on assumptions that are often political. These assumptions will also lead to mischaracterizations and misinformation to the point of libel and slander through rumors and gossip. This goldfish effect has been used for online propaganda to influence the goldfish, memes are a great example. Unfortunately, I don't have any memes I can use while having an in-person conversation. Maybe a t-shirt with memes for every occasion could work, then I could just point.



As a propaganda tool, this can be used to hijack a conversation. Cut someone off by cutting them to the chase. Just jump to some conclusions then take the conversation anywhere you want it to go.



I could start with myself as an example with this one. I would do this very thing until after annoying people like my better half far too much before I finally realized what I was doing. I have always tried to be a good listener, but what do I, or anyone else, actually hear?



I try to understand what people say more than I assume I know what they are talking about. So I listen to (or read) what they say carefully and I try to make myself as clear as my use of the English language will allow. One tactic I've been using lately is when I tell someone they have interrupted and they respond with, "Well what were you saying?", I tell them, as Oliver North would say, "I do not recall" because it was obviously not important enough for them to listen to it in the first place.

Swatting incidents IMO are not a laughing matter and can turn deadly in a heart beat .... There really are some terribly sick people in this world IMO.

All of this was set in motion in early March when Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi questioning Biden’s ability to sign the documents he allegedly signed. As noted on The Liberty Daily:

Last week, Lindell TV’s Cara Castronuova asked White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt about the Autopen scandal, but Leavitt couldn’t offer an answer. She said she’s look into it. Conspicuously, President Trump started posting and talking about Autopen the very next day.
