The judge was cited the Supreme Court’s decision, N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which found a New York law unconstitutional and that the ability to carry a pistol in public was a right guaranteed under the Second Amendment. The decision also said that, in future decisions, the judiciary should evaluate firearms regulations in light of the “historical tradition of firearm regulation.”
Under the Supreme Court’s 2022 standard for seeing whether firearms regulations fall under the Constitution, the government must demonstrate that the measure is within U.S. historical traditions.
Treating “any place where the government would want to protect public order and safety as a sensitive place casts too wide a net ... [and] would seem to justify almost any gun restriction,” Johnston wrote.
He also rejected Illinois state attorneys’ arguments that the Bruen test did not apply in this case because the state, which owns the property, can regulate what individuals take onto its property.

Details from US Attorney's office about arrest of Linda Sun, a former top aide to NY Governor Kathy Hochul, for acting as an undisclosed agent of China and the CCP. Her husband was arrested as well.

“As alleged in the indictment, Linda Sun, a former New York State government employee, acted as an undisclosed agent of the Chinese government while her husband, Christopher Hu, facilitated the transfer of millions of dollars in kickbacks for personal gain. Sun wielded her position of influence among executives to covertly promote PRC and CCP agendas, directly threatening our country’s national security. The FBI is committed to protect the American people from any threat actors who seek to influence officials at the direction of foreign entities,” stated FBI Acting Assistant Director Curtis.

“Sun is alleged to be an undisclosed agent of the PRC and CCP, using Chinese money and her influence within the state of New York to benefit the Chinese government. Sun and her husband then laundered millions of dollars for the foreign country and used the monetary benefits of this scheme to buy luxury vehicles and million dollars properties here in New York,” Thomas M. Fattorusso, Special Agent in Charge of IRS CI New York.  “It is with the unwavering determination of federal law enforcement to root-out foreign agents and their schemes that Sun and Hu will now face justice for their criminal acts.”

As alleged in the indictment, while working for the New York State government – including in high-ranking posts in the Executive Chamber of the New York State government and in multiple state agencies – Sun also acted as an undisclosed agent of the PRC and the CCP. Acting at the request of PRC government officials and the CCP representatives, Sun engaged in numerous political activities in the interests of the PRC and the CCP, including blocking representatives of the Taiwanese government from having access to high-level New York State officers; changing high-level New York State officers’ messaging regarding issues of importance to the PRC and the CCP; obtaining official New York State proclamations for PRC government representatives without proper authorization; attempting to facilitate a trip to the PRC by a high-level New York State politician; and arranging meetings for visiting delegations from the PRC government with New York State government officials.


Sun also repeatedly violated internal rules and protocols within the New York State government to provide improper benefits to PRC and the CCP representatives, including by providing unauthorized invitation letters from the office of high-level New York State officers that were used to facilitate travel by PRC government officials into the United States for meetings with New York State government officials.  Sun’s unauthorized invitation letters for the PRC government delegation constituted false statements made in connection with immigration documents and induced the foreign citizens into unlawfully entering the United States.

Sun never registered as a foreign agent with the Attorney General, and in fact actively concealed that she took actions at the order, request, or direction of PRC government and the CCP representatives. 

In return for these and other actions, Sun received substantial economic and other benefits from representatives of the PRC government and the CCP, including the facilitation of millions of dollars in transactions for the PRC-based business activities of Hu; travel benefits; tickets to events; promotion of a close family friend’s business; employment for Sun’s cousin in the PRC; and Nanjing-style salted ducks prepared by a PRC government official’s personal chef that were delivered to the residence of Sun’s parents.  Sun and Hu laundered the monetary proceeds of this scheme to purchase, among other items, real estate property in Manhasset, New York currently valued at $4.1 million, a condominium in Honolulu, Hawaii currently valued at $2.1 million, and various luxury automobiles, including a 2024 Ferrari.  Sun never disclosed any benefits she received from representatives of the PRC government and the CCP to the New York State government, as she was required to do as a New York State government employee. 

Hu also laundered unlawful proceeds through bank accounts opened in the name of a close relative but that were actually for Hu’s exclusive use.  To open these accounts, Hu unlawfully used an image of the relative’s driver’s license.

The charges in the indictment are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The government’s case is being handled by the Office’s National Security & Cybercrime Section.  Assistant United States Attorneys Alexander A. Solomon and Robert Pollack are in charge of the prosecution, with the assistance of Trial Attorney Scott Claffee from the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section and Litigation Analyst Mary Clare McMahon.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Mantell of the Office’s Asset Recovery Section is handling forfeiture matters.

They have not produced any such evidence,” the Irvine Democrat said in an Aug. 30 press release following the Assembly vote.
In May the Senate approved the bill 30–8.
Min said his bill would protect against a “patchwork of varying election requirements” throughout the state, blocking all cities from requiring voters to present a government-issued identification to vote. The ban would include charter cities, which have more authority than general-law cities over such things as regulating local police and elections.

“We cannot have 100 different charter cities making up 100 different sets of voting rules, based on fringe conspiracy theories,” Min said, referring to questions of election integrity in the 2020 presidential election.
In a May 21 Senate floor hearing, Min said SB 1174 would create a statewide standard that prevents cities from enacting their own policies, which he said could disenfranchise voters.
In a recent Assembly Local Government bill analysis, Min argued that voter ID requirements only create barriers for voters but don’t protect against fraud, as voters already must verify their identity when they register.
He said the state already automatically recounts some ballots, does signature verification checks, and allows voters to track their ballots.
“We will not concede to ploys of voter fraud while an overwhelming body of evidence proves our elections are safe, secure, and above board,” he said.
Voters in California are required to show identification only if they didn’t provide a driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number when registering, but the secretary of state also accepts credit or debit cards, student IDs, or an ID from a commercial establishment.
For mail-in ballots, those without proper identification are treated as provisional ballots per existing state law and election officials are supposed to request proof before counting them. In the 2022 statewide general election, 660 ballots were rejected because of identification issues.
During the March 5 primary election, voters in Huntington Beach, a charter city in Orange County, approved a charter amendment to allow voter ID requirements in city elections starting in 2026.
But according to Min, if SB 1174 is signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the bill would nullify the city’s Measure A before it takes effect.
Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates told The Epoch Times in a recent interview that Min’s bill is “pure political symbolism” in response to the city’s recently passed measure.
He said as a charter city, under Article XI, Section 5 (b) of the California Constitution, Huntington Beach has a right to have voter ID, and the state will lose any legal challenges it brings.
“The state is running headlong into another legal clash, which it will lose miserably. Huntington Beach has it right, the state has it completely wrong. And all Californians want election integrity. It’s common sense,” he said in a text message to The Epoch Times.
According to Huntington Beach Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark, residents have said they would feel more secure if IDs are checked at in-person polling stations.
“We put it out there on the ballot, they said we want this and the state is doing everything within their power to stop us from honoring what the voters have been asking us for,” she told The Epoch Times in a May interview when Min’s bill first cleared the Senate.
California is one of 15 states that doesn’t ask for photo ID at the ballot box, according to lawmakers.
Newsom has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the bill.

You might recall that we began this week with a blog on Monday about the Chinese plans for a lunar catapult "cargo launcher", which, as I pointed out, was really a weapons technology that can be used for other "more peaceful" purposes. The principle which I articulated in the blog is worth repeating here, because it forms the core of much of what I've written on this and similar topics: in such cases, one is not dealing with a peaceful technology which can be weaponized, but rather, with a weapon which under certain circumstances be repurposed for peaceful uses. This is important, because in my opinion this is the principle under which space will be (and probably already has been) weaponized. With that in mind, this article was shared by J.Q., and we are particularly grateful that he spotted it and took the time to share it:

NASA’s asteroid-smashing mission has permanently knocked a moon off its orbit

This is a particularly intriguing article is one ponders it from the standpoint of the above principle as an interpretative template. Consider what the article states:

Quote:Remember when NASA deliberately crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid last year? Well, the aftermath of that cosmic collision just got a whole lot more interesting.

In a groundbreaking study published in the Planetary Science Journal, scientists have uncovered some unexpected results from NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. It turns out that when DART slammed into the asteroid moon Dimorphos in 2022, it didn’t just leave a dent – it completely reshaped the celestial body and potentially set it on a chaotic new path.

First, a quick refresher: DART was NASA’s test run for planetary defense. The idea was to see if we could change the course of an asteroid by hitting it with a spacecraft – kind of like a game of cosmic billiards. The target was Dimorphos, a small asteroid moon orbiting a larger asteroid called Didymos.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. According to Derek Richardson, a professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland and a lead researcher on the DART mission, the impact did more than just nudge Dimorphos off course. It dramatically altered its shape.

One notes that the article casts the whole NASA DART mission in the context of "planetary defense", and that means that kinetic impact itself is, primarily, a weapons technology. But what is intriguing to contemplate in this respect is that the DART mission is implying the emergence of something new: a "celestial impact mechanics" which will be based on the composition and make-up of a target object and how it responds to impacts in specific circumstances (vector of impact, velocity, shape of impacting object and so on), and how all this might influence special types of systems that are tidally locked, and so on.  In short, it is no longer feasible to imagine a kinetic impact simply destroying or nudging a target "off course". One might also be able to envision such a science as being the birth of a new kind of celestial materials and systems engineering.

In a sense, all the above amounts to the beginnings, perhaps, of the "second chapter" of ballistics. Just as the nineteenth century - with the improvements of forging technologies, materials and alloy engineering, chemistry, and so on - ushered in the whole field of ballistics and the enormous improvements in artillery weapons, projectiles, aerodynamics, propulsion powders and so on - that scientific development was quickly brought to a high pitch of development. The technologies and therewith the physics have been endlessly tweaked from then until now, but that is the point: the basic principles were quickly established, everything else was tweaking.

What NASA's DART mission seems to have done, in other words, is to suggest that we're on the verge of a similar period in "celestial ballistics," if I may so put it. The questions to be answered - at least from this "ballistics standpoint" - are intriguing, and the article has already indicated some of these. How many of these will be made public in the coming years remains to be seen, but for now rest assured that as the article avers, more missions are being planned, and the phenomenon is going to be studies closely, for in tidally locked systems, it's best to have a thorough understanding of the effects of kinetic bombardment before one actually begins the kinetic bombardment.

Two new studies, published on Aug. 28 in Nature Immunology, find that increased salt levels can significantly enhance immune cells’ cancer-killing abilities.
One of the two studies also showed that mice who consumed a high-salt diet also had reduced tumor sizes as a result.

“We were very surprised to see that salt instead improved their vigor, metabolism, and killing function and that this also reduced tumor growth in [the] mouse model,” Dr. Christina Zielinski, lead author of one of the studies, told The Epoch Times in an email.
“Salt turned out to be a surprisingly simple [but] overlooked factor” in boosting cancer-killing cells’ effectiveness, Zielinski, who is also the Chair of Infection Immunology at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany, added.
While research suggests a salt-based approach could become a valuable tool for enhancing cancer treatments, the researchers said in a press statement that they don’t recommend eating more salt in humans to activate the immune response against cancer.
Salt Enhances Killer T Cells
Researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology–Hans Knöll Institute discovered that sodium, a component of table salt, can significantly boost T cell activity. T cells are a type of immune cell that fights cancer.

Killer T cells, specifically CD8+ T cells, are essential for identifying and destroying cancer cells. They recognize cancer cells by their cancer proteins and release toxic substances to kill them directly.
The study led by Zielinski showed that human breast cancer tumors have higher levels of sodium compared to healthy tissue, and adding salt helped T cells fight cancer, leading to better survival rates for patients.
T cells treated with salt were also added to tumors in cell cultures and in mice. Researchers found that salt helps T cells use sugar and amino acids better, resulting in a better ability to eliminate tumor cells.
“We were able to show that sodium enhances the immune response of CD8+ T cells,” said Chang-Feng Chu, a co-author of the study in a press release.
Further experiments showed that “pancreatic tumors shrank in the mice after we injected them with T cells pre-treated with salt,” said Chu. The salt improved T cells’ metabolism and energy levels by activating a special pump on the T cells.
“This pump enhances calcium entry into the cells, setting off signals that boost CD8+ T cell activation,” added Zielinski.
High Salt Diet Reduced Tumors in Mice
A separate study from IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Italy, led by Enrico Lugli, found that adding salt to cell cultures can awaken T cells, increasing their longevity and anti-tumor action.
Mice fed a high-salt diet also had reduced tumor growths due to improved T-cell activity, the researchers found.
Lugli stated in a press release that adding salt helps prevent cells from becoming exhausted too quickly. It also improves T cells’ metabolism and energy, making them more effective against cancer.
The researchers found that adding salt to T cells caused a similar effect as exposing the cells to immunotherapy drugs that enhanced their activity.
Study co-author, oncologist, and researcher Agnese Losurdo, said in the press release that a higher sodium level in the blood is associated with a better response to cancer immunotherapy.
However, the authors said that a high-salt diet “is not readily translatable to humans because of the consequences it could have on the cardiovascular system.”
They suggested that instead, T-cells can be exposed to high levels of salt for a short period of time before being transplanted into patients as a form of cancer therapy.
“Our results demonstrate that sodium chloride significantly impacts the functionality of CD8 T lymphocytes, crucial cells in the anti-tumor response,” Lugli said.
According to the team, while these findings are promising, they need to be confirmed in clinical settings.
Caution is Key
These findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that salt boosts the body’s immune response against cancer cells. A 2019 study from Belgium showed that a high salt diet in mice slowed tumor growth, compared to those that were not on a high salt diet.
However, caution is essential. Despite these promising results, Lugli stated that simply increasing dietary salt intake won’t have the same effects and could be harmful.
A recent study from earlier this year found that people who regularly added salt to food had a 41 percent higher risk for gastric cancer compared to those who rarely or never added salt. Research also shows that excessive salt intake can lead to cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, and stomach cancer.
Lugli added that the benefits observed in the studies are about manipulating salt concentrations outside the body to boost immune cell activity. Zielinski agrees, adding that the focus is on exposing immune cells to higher salt concentrations in a controlled environment before injecting them into patients.
Both research teams are now exploring how these findings could be translated into clinical settings to advance immunotherapy.
