I'm with you - why in the hell would anyone report that to the treasury or the mint? Personally, I'd dig it up and re-bury it elsewhere, somewhere I could keep an eye on... probably several different somewheres, smaller stashes. Then I'd sell it out a few coins at a time, different places - coin shops, pawn shops, etc, but never enough to get on the radar. Just a few grand a year. I'm a simple man with simple tastes, so I don't need a crap ton of flashy stuff to be bought with it, anyhow. Even if I had to sell it at melt value, that'd be enough to keep me happy.
