In Messengers of Deception Jaques Vallée recounts attending a 1975 meeting of what would become the Heaven’s Gate cult. Curiously, he noted that his friend “Major Murphy”, a US counterintelligence officer whose rank was far higher than Major, sat in front row.







Vallée never says how high "Major Murphy" really ranked, only that he served in Italy in WWII and organized counterintelligence missions stateside to intercept U-boats, likely OSS. Heaven’s Gate co-founder Marshall Applewhite himself was an instructor in the Signals Corps.

The Applewhites had to leave the city when he was drafted in 1954. They spent the next two years in Salzburg, Austria, and then White Sands, N.M., where he was an instructor in the Army Signal Corps. He was given an honorable discharge in 1956, according to a 1974 resume provided by his sister.

Then known as Human Individual Metamorphosis, the cult held this meeting at the Bechtel International Center at Stanford, which I assume is named in honor of generous donations from the billionaire Bechtel construction dynasty. Bill Gates partnered with Bechtel for his nuclear reactor construction.
