Since we don't know what type of guns were used we must rely on the reports that a 'dozen shots' were heard fired.
Since it is rare for a revolver to have 12 bullets chambered we shall go with 'its a semi automatic pistol' with approximately 12 rounds in a magazine.
We shall assume for the sake of convenience that he two pistols of the same make and model ok.
He shot 5 people , not including himself, and killed 2 and critically wounded 3 before his 1st pistol ran out of bullets.
That is close to 50% hit and of those hit , a 40% kill ratio. (this is close to my own estimate that follows below ok)
I estimate on the above data that another 3 people would have died and here is why ...
12 bullets with 50% hit ratio = 6 hits ... and of those 6 hits 50% kill = 3 ... therefore 3 others were most likely to die.
Personal Disclosure: Thankfully he shot and killed himself 1st and that saved at least 2 other lives minimum from being killed on average!
Well done to the hero who confronted him!
Good estimate, but it may have been even more. You've not accounted for potential spare magazines.
I never go into the world without a loaded pistol and 2 spare magazines. Each magazine holds 17 rounds (standard magazine for that pistol - I have larger magazines for it, but only use them at the range because I'm lazy and I hate reloading, but on the street they look like a donkey dick sticking out of the pistol).
So, in my case, loaded pistol = 17 rounds in the mag, 1 in the chamber, total 18 rounds. 2 spare magazines, total 34 spare magazine rounds. Total loadout = 52 rounds. We call that "loaded for bear". If I get in a mess out there, or if some jackass starts shooting up the crowd... in other words, if anyone gets hurt when I'm out there, I ain't gonna be the last one.
So, if his pistol had standard magazines, then each mag would hold between 7 (.45 ACP) and around 18 ( I think some Glocks hold 18) rounds per magazine. Most 9mm pistols hold about 15 rounds per magazine, I believe.
Mine's not a Glock (because I just hate Glocks), but it's standard mag is 17 rounds and I've never seen a smaller magazine for it.
If he had extra magazines, especially if he had spares for both pistols, it could have been a lot, LOT worse.
