Many miraculous cures are attributed to the Virgin of Guadalupe. About twenty million people a year visit the basilica of Guadalupe to gaze in transfixed awe at the wonderful and inexplicable life-size image on Juan Diego’s burlap-like tilma.

Some accounts hold that the medal was not again reproduced until several years after the apparitions. But other documents accepted as official indicate that within the next two years (183233), fifty thousand were struck and given away or sold. In France five hundred thousand more had been sold by the autumn of 1834, two million by 1836, a million a year thereafter, and more than a billion had been sold worldwide by the time of Catherine’s death in December 1876.

The first papal visit to the shrine of the apparition of Our Lady of the Grotto at Lourdes took place in 1982. The most famous healing shrine in the world, long since a vast and splendid place, is annually visited by over fifteen million people.

Quicklime had been poured over their bodies due to the contagious properties of the influenza. Francisco’s remains were not found intact, but Jacinta’s body was found completely incorrupt, and was again found incorrupt in 1950. Even during World War II, over five hundred thousand people annually visited the shrine at Fátima. Since then it has been visited by as many as twenty million people each year.
