Do you know what else can move through the skies silently, hover silently, and suddenly accelerate to blinding speed without generating shock waves or sonic booms or liquefying human occupants?
Holograms. Holograms can do all of that.
Do you know what can't do it? Physical objects. Disregarding aerodynamics of flight, any object that moves in atmosphere, regardless of propulsion methods, displaces air. When it moves rapidly, it displaces air rapidly. If it moves rapidly enough - faster than about 1100 feet per second, as I recall, it displaces air rapidly enough to create a shock wave, resulting in a sonic boom. So engine noises are moot in that case.
Air is not displaced by holographic images. Radar goes right through them, doesn't bounce off of them, and so there is no radar return from them, either, since they are not physical objects.
My money says they were testing some sort of hologram projector to assess psych war potentials, and to wind up the people down there in the way of distraction.
If it assesses favorably, it might soon be coming to a neighborhood near you... wherever "you" may be. Minneapolis or Tehran strike me as good test beds currently....

Right after I left here for the hub of military activity in Newport News, Va, there was a huge rash of triangular craft sightings in the county just south of here, Wythe County, right around Wytheville, VA. I've often wondered about that. It would have been in the mid 1980's.
