Quote:Mishlove: But you did repeat that study with the famous out of body experiencer, Robert Monroe.
Tart: Yes. And he couldn’t quite do as well on some things and his physiology was different. Again, it demonstrated the validity of this stuff. We can apply science and learn more about OBEs. It’s not just, well, there are these weird people who have funny experiences. The idea of the soul has clearly come through an out-of-the-body experience all through history. It’s not Greek theologians debating about a word that means wind and then just arrive at the concept of the soul.

Quote:Mishlove: You got associated with Dr. Andrija Puharich back in the 1950s. He had the Round Table Foundation, as I recall, up in Maine. Puharich is known these days mostly, I suppose, for his discovery of Uri Geller, the Israeli psychic, but back in those days he had an active research program, and you became an associate of his.
Tart: Yeah, in 1953 I went off to college, MIT. I thought I was going to be an engineer.
Andrija Puharich it's a party
Quote:Tart: We had a psychic research club that we had founded. We had Puharich come down and talk. I was fascinated enough by what he’d done to say, “I need a summer job to earn money for college. You’ve got a position open?” He had a research assistant position open. I earned a dollar an hour, which I thought was good back then.
Mishlove: In fact, you are the person who introduced the phrase ‘out-of-body experience’ into the research literature.
Tart: Although, unfortunately, I originally thought out-of-the-body experiences needed an acronym to be scientific: so O-O-B-E’s, out-of-body experiences. I made a terrible mistake because people started coming up to me after lectures saying, “I want to tell you about my OOBEs.” I never thought anybody would pronounce it. So just OBE’s, out-of-body experiences.
