IMO, the US should respond to the al Udeid attack by entirely obliterating the nearest Iranian military port facility to the Straits of Hormuz (to hamper Iranian mining of the straits), which I think is Bandar Abbas. Then put out a public message to Iran along the lines of "we told you that retaliation would be met with destruction. Apparently you didn't believe us. Try us again, see what happens. You have more locations we can destroy than we have locations you can hit. Keep it going, see what you have left when the smoke clears. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and have a nice day!"
