as I recall, Yuri Gagarin's flight was totally controlled from the ground.

but he definitely went into space, and deserves full credit for man's first space flight.

I understand they fly 747s to the upper atmosphere and experience temorary weightlessness.  (used in filming Apollo 13 I think).  I wonder how much higher the glams flew.
