They were merely lab rats in a social engineering experiment, similar to the early space program, when they sent animals into space to see what would happen. The difference is that this wasn't about human biology in space; this was about human psychology on Earth. Perhaps a marketing ploy as well, to show how clueless celebs can fly into space and temporarily lose a few pounds.
The fact that they made it there and back, if they actually did, was the real accomplishment. They didn't blow up on takeoff, implode in space, blow up on re-entry, or go splat on touchdown, and all on autopilot. All great achievements, if it happened at all. That would be the big deal of all this IMO.
