Yeah, nerves are getting tight.
Last fall, an old friend of mine, a guy I knew growing up, shot and killed a guy in a Walmart parking lot. Guy cut him off, he and Dennis has some words, then Dennis went back to his car, got his gun, and plugged the dude. Then he called the cops and went to a nearby Mexican restaurant to get something to eat while he waited on the cops to arrive.
He was found guilty of murder in January, But I don't think he's been sentenced yet. His mistake was in going back to his car and getting his gun. That made it "premeditated" as he had time to think about it, so I'd imagine he'll end his days in prison. If he hadn't gone back for his gun, a competent lawyer could have gotten the charges reduced to manslaughter. By going back to his car for his gun, he showed that he had opportunity to just leave after the guy started a fight with him, which would have de-escalated the situation. By going baxck with his gun to shoot the guy, that demonstrated "intent", which is what made it murder.
But yes, folks are getting touchy, and the fun just keeps coming. COVID, the economy, etc, was the start of it I think, but currently we have the California wildfires, hurricane destruction and flooding in the east, and that's not soothing any nerves, either.
It's why I rarely venture into civilization, and when I do, I always go armed... just in case the other guy is, too. If anyone gets hurt, I don't plan on being the last one. I'm an old man, and not as up to the rough and tumble as I once was, but I can still manage a 3 pound trigger pull if it gets hairy.
But for me, the best solution is to just stay the hell away from people, cause people is crazy. If I don't get out amongst them, folks have less chance to start any shit I might have a need to resolve, so I just stay put.
