I think we're seeing some of this weapons tech mixed with clever old school garage inventions being rolled out (Ukrainians to the Houthis) which the US defense think-tankers seem to have overlooked. I mean the Air Force/DARPA/private defense contractors were testing drones to shoot down ICBMs back in the 80s. Lord knows what they got down in their deep underground arsenal of black tech toys...but for total annihilation instead of weapons to deal with the little annoying mice. Perhaps Russia has same issue. Iran's wet dream for past 30 years is to sink a US aircraft carrier.

The mind-set of our MIC is if the weapons tech is under $1 Billion it's not worth doing.
Probably the best performance of hypersonic weapons is their ability to burn through money at 10X the speed of sound.

Quote:Analysts have questioned the alleged capabilities of hypersonic weapons, and recent studies further undermine these claims. This makes one wonder why the US government is still devoting billions of dollars to their development and deployment, thereby taking money from other pressing national needs. For the last several years, research and development on hypersonic weapons has consumed several billion dollars annually, corresponding to about 3 percent of all US defense research and development spending. Cumulatively, the United States has spent over $10 billion so far on hypersonic weapons—a figure likely to grow once these weapons enter full-scale production.Hypersonic weapons are mediocre. It’s time to stop wasting money on them
