Women would be burned for having friends.
People were being burned alive for the simple fact that they didn't agree with "the church" were accused of witchcraft and burned alive for having a different opinion.
Church leaders want control. They use fear to get it.
Women were targeted to maintain order and control.
Is that the Devil's work? I don't know that dude, so I can't say. Not every major religion has a Satan. Doesn't mean I'm comfortable hanging out at the crossroads around midnight though.
