"The UAE’s cloud seeding missions have seen tremendous success over the past two decades, positioning it as a leader in the space and one of the first Gulf countries to adopt this technology to increase rainfall and combat water scarcity."

Making ice and snow sometimes involved fire. Bernard Vonnegut’s method, called "rain by fire" created tiny silver iodide particles by burning charcoal and silver.
Name and plot sound familiar? That's because both Kurt and his atmospheric scientist brother worked at GE.

Schaefer-who worked with the Vonnegut brothers & Irving Langmuir at GE, describing the history of Project Cirrus and their weather modification efforts in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1968. Once the gravity of their experiments was realized the Army was brought in.
"Since ancient times man has dreamed of manipulating the weather to his advantage. His efforts to this end have ranged from drawing pictographs, lighting ceremonial fires, participating in rain dances and then during the past twenty-one years in directing his attention toward utilizing certain scientific relationships to initiate physical and chemical reactions in the atmosphere."
"During the period of 1947 to 1952, 225 flights were conducted for the specific purpose of establishing the possibilities as well as limitations of dry ice, silver iodide & water seeding cloud operations." As Project Cirrus continued the GE group received many interested visitors.

"Army Signal Corps and the Office of Naval Research. Drs. Irving Langmuir and Vincent J. Schaefer, of General Electric, who orig- inated the seeding technique, insist it can make rain. The Army and Navy, interested in military applications, just won't say."

Quote:Kurt Vonnegut’s science-fiction novel “Cat’s Cradle” revolves around a tricky compound called ice-nine that can turn water solid at room temperature.
Vonnegut, who worked for GE in the 1950s as an in-house journalist, came up with many beautifully outlandish plots for his best-selling books. But ice research was hitting close to his beat as well as his home.
That’s because at the time, another member of his family was employed by GE — his brother, the physicist Bernard Vonnegut. Bernard, together with Nobel laureate Irving Langmuir and atmospheric scientist Vincent Schaefer, formed a crack research team looking for ways to control the weather and even break up hurricanes. In 1946, Schaefer made history when he flew into a cloud in a small plane and set off the world’s first artificial snowfall with a bag of dry ice. He was known as the Snow Man ever since.
