The photos, taken in black and white as was typical in the early 1960s, don’t show the faces of the young women. Instead, we see their backs at a desk, the photos snapped in classified government secrecy to document a wild new experiment the U.S. Air Force was undertaking.

There is, however, one face in the photos—that of the VERITAC, a hulking gray machine with eyes that rotated and settled on random numbers and a smile of buttons marked zero through nine.

At first glance, you might think the young women were practicing their typing skills—only this was no typewriter, but a novel way to test for extrasensory perception, or ESP. Clairvoyance. Obtaining information through the powers of the mind.

For decades, this story lay hidden inside a plain manila envelope in the archives of the Diane M. Halle Library—photographs and newspaper clippings and typewritten missives that weave together an intriguing and little-known chapter of history involving the Cold War, paranoia, and supernatural powers.

And at the center of this story? The young women of Endicott Junior College.

At the heart of their work was the VERITAC—a boutique device manufactured in Gloucester and designed by Everette Dagle. By randomly generating numbers 0 through 9, the machine invited subjects to either predict each number, which would then be generated, or “the subject could attempt to, clairvoyantly or telepathically, determine which number had already been generated and displayed as a bright ‘target’ in another room,” according to an article in the Research Review, a publication out of AFCRL’s Office of Aerospace Research.

According to a Boston Globe article, Endicott was the site of the first government-sponsored ESP experiments, but it wasn’t the last. In 1978, the CIA quietly launched Project Star Gate, which picked up on the idea of leveraging psychic powers and remote viewing for espionage and military operations. The project ran through the mid-1990s and, in 2017, the CIA declassified information about the project.

One of these actors from the 1964 Players Directory went on to become "The Red Elvis." He died in East Berlin in 1986 under suspicious circumstances.


Dean Cyril Reed (Sept 22, 1938 – June 13, 1986) was an American singer-songwriter and actor who became a superstar in the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. He adopted socialist politics while touring and became known for his anti-American lyrics in the Eastern Bloc, earning him the nickname "The Red Elvis". He permanently moved to East Germany in 1973 (keeping his American citizenship) and became the only American to receive the Lenin Prize for art.

Despite Reed’s move to the Eastern Bloc, he still spoke highly for his love for America and retained U.S. citizenship for the rest of his life. The belt buckle and acoustic guitar he was known for travelled with him from America and he wore them with tremendous pride. However, in a 60 Minutes interview in 1986 about the Berlin Wall and Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, Reed compared US President Ronald Reagan to Joseph Stalin, inciting fury in Americans, who sent death threats to his family. 

Six-weeks after the interview was given, Reed was found dead at age 47 in Zeuthener near his home in East Berlin. The abruptness and timing of his death has launched ongoing theories from assassination by the CIA or KGB to suicide. A letter was found on the back of his screenplay for a film about the Wounded Knee Massacre that expressed regret about the failing relationship with his third wife Renate. Whatever the cause of his death may have been, Reed’s legacy lived on as the Eastern Bloc’s most notable superstar.

In 2004, Russia's Rossiya television channel aired a documentary on Dean Reed, entitled Кто Вы, мистер Рид? (Who Are You, Mister Reed?), speculating on the possibilities of him having been a CIA, KGB or Stasi agent, but failing to present any concrete evidence to support any such theories. Between 1976 and 1978, he worked for the Stasi's international department according to a 2005 book.

It was "cool" for about 5 years then financial troubles eventually led to a sale in 2011, then another in 2016 and yet another in 2021. Shutdown in 2020 due to Covid, sold in 2021 for $650 million to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, which reopened it on April 27, 2022. It is the first Vegas resort owned by Native Americans.
