It's National Camera Day. This Navy photographer on USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), has an impressive rig as he prepares for a reconnaissance mission in a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver in 1944. He can shoot with the massive aerial camera or with the Helldiver's rear twin .30 caliber machine guns. Chief Petty Officer Hitchcock used this one over Germany in 1944.
June 29, 1927: For the first time in 200 years, a total eclipse of the sun was seen in Britain. Few people were lucky enough to witness the spectacle, but those in Giggleswick in Yorkshire were able to see a perfect, full eclipse, which lasted for less than 30 seconds. June 29, 1956: Marilyn Monroe married the esteemed US playright, Arthur Miller, in a 4-minute civil ceremony in Westchester County Court House in White Plains, New York State. The bride was 30 and the groom 40. The marriage lasted until 20 January 1961, when John F. Kennedy was sworn in Office as 35th president. No coincidence. June 29, 1967: Hollywood star Jayne Mansfield (aged 34), was killed in a car accident at 2:25AM on her way to New Orleans, Louisiana. Her boyfriend/attorney Sam Brody and Ronnie Harrison were killed as well. Jayne's three children, Mickey Hargitay, Zoltan Hargitay and Mariska Hargitay survived the crash. Contrary to media reports that Mansfield was decapitated are untrue, although she did suffer severe (scalping) head trauma. Hollywood's "smartest dumb blonde" was allegedly intimately involved with numerous men, including Robert and John F. Kennedy, her attorney Samuel S. Brody, and Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli. In America the barriers on the back of all tractor-trailers today are known as Mansfield bars...a safety feature fitted to trucks & lorries after her accident which took the trucking industry years of gov't litigation before finally implementing through years of trial & failure. The crashed car was saved by a private collector in Florida, where it became a roadside attraction in the 1970s, then was on display by the Dearly Departed Tours & Artifact Museum in LA until the COVID-19 pandemic, when it went into storage, and was never seen again. However, you can get a virtual tour. If interested see this Dearly Departed Tours history vid which has a re-enactment of the fatal crash scenario: Homeless in Texas... Or not! An A-7 from JFK trapped aboard Saratoga that had Hornets. It happens now & then. Each time the DOJ does things like this, its institutional capital decays a little more. Bit by bit, eventually the balance of the nation has no faith in its Department of Justice. June 30, 1894: London’s Tower Bridge was officially opened to traffic. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become a world-famous feature of the London skyline.
June 30, 1937: The world’s first emergency telephone service “999” was introduced in London. It allowed a caller to contact the emergency services for urgent assistance. All 999 calls are always free. The system was introduced following a house fire in Wimpole Street on 10 November 1935, in which five women were killed. A neighbour had tried to telephone the fire brigade and was so outraged at being held in a queue by the Welbeck telephone exchange that he wrote a letter to the editor of The Times, which prompted a government inquiry. 999: can somebody help? "What Price Bikini?" editorial cartoon by Bruce Russell (1903-1963) published June 30, 1946. June 30, 1946: the goddess "Gilda" went atomic. "The tradition of tagging some tongue-in-cheek message or name upon bombs has been carried out for the A-bomb. The world's greatest potential for large-scale destruction has been dubbed 'GILDA,' after the recent movie by Hollywood star Rita Hayworth." - Radio announcer, June 30, 1946. The first test was Able. The bomb was named Gilda after Rita Hayworth's character in the 1946 film Gilda, and was dropped from the B-29 Superfortress Dave's Dream of the 509th Bombardment Group on June 30, 1946 (July 1st in the states). It detonated 520 feet above the target fleet and caused less than the expected amount of ship damage because it missed its aim point by 2,130 feet. In late June of 1946, media hype over the first post-World War II test of an atomic weapon was hitting a fever pitch. News of the imminent Operation Crossroads detonation of the "Gilda" bomb at Bikini Atoll on June 30, 1946 (U.S. time zone) screamed from headlines and blared from radio broadcasts. There was even a (true) story about atomic scientists pasting a pinup photo of screen star Rita Hayworth on the weapon they had named after her hit film. Two weeks after the Able shot: "Extra Added! June 30, 1997: Britain handed Hong Kong back to China when the 99 year lease agreed with China expired at midnight. The lavish ceremony on July 1st 1997 was attended by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Prince Charles and the Chinese President Jiang Zemin. Luckily I got to visit Hong Kong 3 times before this happened. First time I was shocked by how many British girls were living there and all the British pubs/night clubs. I was naive back then, just did not know. Exactly one minute before midnight the Flag of the United Kingdom and the flag of British Hong Kong were slowly lowered to the British national anthem "God Save the Queen", symbolizing the end of British colonial rule in Hong Kong as very final and last time. A hiatus of exactly twelve seconds occurred between the British and the Chinese anthems due to a timing misunderstanding. The missing ten seconds during the Hong Kong handover Congratulations to James Donovan who was presented with the Arctic Star on his 105th birthday last week. Donovan is one of the last men to see Bismarck in action. He was serving aboard HMS King George V when the Royal Navy hunted down the dreaded German battleship in 1941. June 29, 1974: in music history, "Sundown" rises to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song will remain at the top spot for one week and would become Gordon Lightfoot's best-selling single. It is about infidelity, but Sundown is not the woman, but the other man who is pursuing her!
LA City Council saves Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home from demolition Troubling updates about the "saved" Marilyn Monroe house: in an exclusive with gossip blog TMZ, “sources close to” property owners Milstein-Bank say they “feel violated by the ruling and don't want to be forced to sell,” intend to fight the designation in court, and allege the property has a leaky roof which the owners do not intend to repair, as “the new designation makes it very complicated.” However, doing structural work that does not change a landmark’s appearance is not complicated: one need only apply for a standard LADBS permit and Office of Historic Resources will sign off. Not repairing a leaking roof would, in effect, lead to demolition by neglect. July 1, 1908: SOS was adopted as the international distress signal. In Morse code, SOS, is signified by 3 dots, 3 dashes, then 3 dots (· · · – – – · · ·). SOS was chosen because it could not be misinterpreted as being a message for anything else.
I don't know when/who started it, but when I was in the Navy, "SOS" stood for "Shit On a Shingle", military slang for chipped beef on toast. It sucked, I hated it, we all did. I always opted for peanut butter & jam sandwiches. July 1, 1914: the ships of the U.S. Navy officially became DRY under General Order No. 99 signed by Secretary of the Nay Josephus Daniels. Most ships spent the previous night having parties and mock funerals. British, French, German, and Dutch sailors rushed to any nearby American ship to help consume the last of the booze. July 1, 1989: Cher began shooting the video for "If I Could Turn Back Time" on board USS Missouri (BB-63). The Navy's hopes of using it as a recruiting tool were dashed when Cher changed into a revealing leather strap outfit that caused the video to be banned by several TV networks and the Navy admirals decided no more thinly dressed celebrities onboard warships. Well, with their recruitment quotas at a historical low, maybe they should rethink that idea. Today is Indiana Jones Day! The Indiana Jones franchise began when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg met to discuss making a movie based on the classic adventure serial DON WINSLOW OF THE NAVY. Lucas wanted to make a B movie modeled on those serials and conceived The Adventures of Indiana Smith, featuring a daring archaeologist named after his Alaskan Malamute dog. Spielberg hated the name Indiana Smith. Lucas shelved the Indiana Smith project to focus on creating his own space opera, Star Wars (1977). Lucas and Spielberg ultimately decided to create the original character of Indy. Don Winslow of the Navy is a 1942 Universal Pictures Serial film based on the comic strip Don Winslow of the Navy by Commander Frank V. Martinek. It was theatrically released in January 1942. IMDB | The 4 hour film is on Youtube. Don Winslow of the Navy (comic strip) was an American comic strip created by Frank Victor Martinek and was distributed mostly by the Bell Syndicate from 1934 to 1955. The title character was a spy-chasing lieutenant commander in Naval intelligence. The comic strip led to a radio adventure serial that began in 1937, as well as film serials that began in 1942. Original comic book stories also appeared in Fawcett Comics titles starting in 1943. Although created primarily as a Navy recruitment and propaganda tool, the strip received high marks from Coulton Waugh for “excellent suspense, and ingenious, spine-joggling situations.” Ron Goulart credits Don Winslow with "intrigue, spychasing, beautiful women, and villains with names like Dr. Centaur, the Dwarf, and the Scorpion." Maybe the Navy should resurrect this comic as a recruitment tool! It was broadcast on the Blue Network from October 19, 1937, until May 26, 1939, and was revived for a second run from October 5, 1942, until January 1, 1943. July 1, 2007: Smoking in England was banned in all public indoor spaces, including, pubs, restaurants, nightclubs, and most workplaces. Due to confusion over whether "M"-rated films (Mature-not recommended for children under the age of 15) were suitable for children, "M" was renamed to "GP" (for General audiences, Parental guidance, in 1971. On February 11, 1972, "GP" was revised to "PG." Frogs (1972) was one of the first films to earn a "PG" rating. Many of the 500 Florida frogs and 100 South American cane toads purchased for use in the film escaped during production. Drive like an Egyptian... Prince & Princesses of the Holy Roman Empire During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain in 1776 actually occurred on July 2, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain's rule. July 2 was the day the Declaration was adopted but the 4th was the day it was published and first signatures were attached to it. John Adams thought July 2 would be marked as a national holiday for generations to come. The late historian Pauline Maier also said that arguments over the how to celebrate the Declaration arose between the Federalists (of John Adams) and the Republicans (of Thomas Jefferson) and that the Declaration and its anniversary day weren’t widely celebrated until the Federalists faded away from the political scene after 1812. Jefferson and Adams both passed away two days later, on the Fourth of July, 1826. (Non) compos mentis: The Latin expression compos mentis literally means "master of (one's) own mind". It is used to express that one is "in possession" of one's mental capacities. The word Latin word compos (perhaps derived from the adjective indeclinable potis, 'capable', 'he who can') is generally used with the genitive of that which the subject is in possession of: the mind (mentis), the soul (animi), the self (sui). In today's speech, and especially in the field of law, the expression is used with the negation 'non compos mentis' to indicate a person who is insane or who is in defect of his full mental capacities and, therefore, cannot be held responsible for his actions. Happy 4th!
July 3, 1982, HMS Conqueror arrived in Scotland while flying a Jolly Roger to signify the sub's successful operations during the Falklands War. In the new documentary "THE CONQUEROR: HOLLYWOOD FALLOUT," Utah resident Mary Dickson shares some gems from the A.E.C. prepared book "Atomic Tests in Nevada" (Government Publishing Office, 1955). I was walking around these parts in 2016-17, barefoot. I'm sure they cleaned it all up by then, right?! A former FEMA director Louis O. Giuffrida introduces a pre-broadcast screening of ABC's THE DAY AFTER to FEMA staff on Nov 14, 1983. In 1970 while at the US Army War College, Giuffrida wrote a thesis (PDF) titled "National Survival—Racial Imperative", outlining a military contingency plan for the forcible relocation of some 500,000 black militant Americans to concentration camps in the event of a national emergency involving racial strife. Though debatable as the thesis states it would take 14 years to relocate them forcibly and appears to question if this is even realistic given the history of Japanese internment camps. His thesis became available after a journo filed a FOIA in 2014. He resigned as FEMA director following a congressional fraud investigation. Several years after leaving FEMA, Louis O. Giuffrida consulted on security matters for Lyndon LaRouche's defense team in his mail fraud trial. Proponents have cited a contingency plan (Rex 84) drafted in part by U.S. Marine Colonel Oliver North calling for the suspension of the Constitution and the detainment of citizens in the event of a national crisis. This was aimed at left-wing activists, not the libertarians and right-wingers generally associated with FEMA theories. This has been linked to a 1970 document by Louis Giuffrida. Project 908 saw FBI agents, working effectively undercover for FEMA, detailing large warehouses, automobile facilities, Masonic temples, Elks lodges, casinos, camp sites, Coca-Cola bottling plants, Indian bingo halls, country inns, furniture stores, and other potential relocation facilities. In Arkansas, agents lined up a meeting with Walmart executives to discuss using the company’s huge stores for Project 908, explaining as a cover that they wanted to learn crisis management techniques from companies that had large centralized leadership. In May 1983 under National Security Directive 95 (signed by Reagan), Giuffrida & others established another 'Crisis' management project called "MEDUSA". CRISIS INFORMATION AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CIMS) : PROJECT MEDUSA (PDF) 1984 correspondence between Louis O. Giuffrida & CIA deputy dir John N. McMahon: (note Project MEDUSA): Archive.org (FEMA Dir Giuffrida's letter to CIA attached at link about a secure vault constructed for ALL intelligence, but need secure computer terminals within the vault...he recommends a SAFE IBM system) In another project under same name, "MEDUSA" (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio) is a portable directed-energy non-lethal weapon designed by WaveBand Corporation in 2003-2004 for temporary personnel incapacitation. i.e. Crowd Control. In 2005, Sierra Nevada Corporation acquired WaveBand Corporation. The weapon is based on the microwave auditory effect resulting in a strong sound sensation in the human head when it is subject to certain kinds of pulsed/modulated microwave radiation...according to the Navy — SBIR/STTR Search Database. SBIR = Small Business Innovation Research STTR = Small Business Technology Transfer The project received a positive initial evaluation from the US Navy. However, Sierra Nevada Corporation had discontinued (we are told) the project as of 2008, "possibly because it may have been shown to permanently damage human brain tissue". Hmmm, Havana Syndrome, anyone? CIA black magicians also covered in "Military Neuroscience and the Coming Age of Neurowarfare” (2017) by Armin Krishnan, citing Gordon Thomas book "Journey Into Madness: The True Story of Secret CIA Mind Control and Medical Abuse” (1989) BTW, Sierra Nevada Corporation is of at this moment building the new NextGen National Airborne Operations Centers (NAOC) aka Doomsday plane. Though not expected to be delivered until July 2036. So, the 50 year-old EMP hardened Boeing E-4B "Nightwatch" Doomsday plane will just have to make do. Here's a nice quote from Paul Linebarger, the father of modern psychological warfare: Psychological Warfare By Paul M. A. Linebarger (1948). Linebarger studied both Allied and Axis propaganda efforts and concluded that the British were superior, because they disguised their propaganda as news. Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger (July 11, 1913 – August 6, 1966), better known by his pen-name Cordwainer Smith, was an American author known for his science fiction works. Linebarger was a US Army officer, a noted East Asia scholar, and an expert in psychological warfare. Although his career as a writer was shortened by his death at the age of 53, he is considered one of science fiction's more talented and influential authors.
