Elon Musk Places 'Temporary Limits' on Unverified Twitter Accounts

Musk—whose purchase of the social media company last year has come under significant scrutiny amid an increase in outages, widespread layoffs and concerns about content moderation—tweeted Saturday afternoon that he is taking new action to combat "extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation." The platform will temporarily restrict the amount of tweets users can view per day.

Unverified accounts will be limited to viewing 800 posts each day, while new accounts that have not been verified will be limited to only 400 posts per day, Musk wrote.

Even those who have purchased the premium Twitter Blue will be limited in how many tweets they can view. These users alongside those who are verified will be able to see 8,000 posts per day, according to Musk.

Musk has not responded to the backlash, instead tweeting, "Rate limited due to reading all the posts about rate limits."



Musk initially announced the limitations as being lower before amending those numbers. He first said that unverified accounts would be limited to 600, new unverified accounts to 300 and verified users to 6,000 tweets per day.

Newsweek reached out to Musk via SpaceX and Tesla's press emails. After purchasing the social media platform, Musk disbanded the company's public relations team, so no press contact for Twitter could be reached.

The limitations are the latest controversy since Musk's Twitter takeover. Musk announced earlier this year that he would dismantle Twitter's "legacy" verification program, which allowed prominent individuals to be verified to differentiate themselves from parodies or impersonators. Instead, verification now comes from a Twitter Blue account. Meanwhile, Twitter has also seen an uptick in hate speech amid his pledge to prioritize free speech on the platform.

Internal revenue documents reported by The New York Times last month found that advertising revenue dropped 59 percent in the five weeks between April 1 and the first week of May amid these controversies.

Just one theory, but I think the big msm networks were data mining the hell out of Twitter, daily, 24/7, and then feeding all that data into a custom narrative chatGPT to 'create' stories they call news. No real journalists required and mucho cheaper. Data is the new oil...the spice must flow and ELon is determined to control that flow.

An 800 post a day limit is way too high to combat data mining or "scraping". That many posts can fill their coffers to overflowing, and they'll never lack for the hate-fodder they so crave to make their own slanted and twisted propaganda pieces. I think  he was being way too over-generous there. If two of them work together and coordinate, that's 1600 posts a day, and if they get the whole office in on the gig, well, you see how that's gonna work.

There is no way the DNC is going to allow Twitter to be free to have people post evidence of foul play in 2024 in my opinioin.


Twiiter will be crushed, debanked, cancelled, and or Forced Censored by some bill, FCC regulation, Disinformation Rule, etc.

Just my opinion. The Twitter you saw last week will not be allowed to be the Twitter of Fall of 2024 and beyond.

Not quite. You've heard the term doom scrolling, right? 800 tweets will get you about 10 minutes of reading. A tweet may only have one word or just an emoji, that counts too. So, as you're scrolling (not reading) and/or reading threads, all those tweets count. That's why Elon increased the limit several times already. Even the blue checks are having issues and once you hit your limit you cannot even view your own tweets. LOL. Least that was how it was going yesterday. I typically follow several group lists (like minded users on particular topics) and will quickly rack up 5-6000 tweets in short order. Those who use an app like tweetdeck to have a running feed of followers (like the old RSS) will easily rack up 10,000 or more in an afternoon.

Prior to the rate limit the vast majority of twat users have been unverified old & new accounts & no account at all, which are now considerably restricted and including no access at all. The screen scraping issue is a plague with no real solution so apparently Elon decided to drop a nuke and kill everything along with the host. It'll all probably change within the week as the complaints roll in and people leave for greener pastures...if any are to be found. This could also be a test of some kind (network flows to social experimenting), migrating servers, more purging, making adjustments for the new Matrix, and/or not paying the storage bill.
