Feb 20, 1939: 20,0000 people attended the German American Bund "Americanization" rally at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Attendees denounced Jewish conspiracies, President Franklin Roosevelt, and others. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, was criticized for allowing the rally to take place. But LaGuardia, along with the American Jewish Committee, supported the Bund's right to rally on free-speech grounds. "If we are for free speech, we have to be for free speech for everybody, and that includes Nazis."

After WWII the American Nazi party was again founded by George Lincoln Rockwell (March 9, 1918 – August 25, 1967), a former WWII US Navy officer.

An appeal to help "Build a New Order" by joining the National Socialist Liberation Front is distributed by the National Socialist White People’s Party (NSWPP) based in Arlington, Va. in 1970.


A 1970 application to join the group is on the flip side of the PDF flyer. The flyer is from a collection by Maurice Rovner, a Jewish schoolteacher who attempted to get on far right mailing lists to keep tabs on extreme right organizations. He often penciled in dates or other markings helping to identify the materials he received. This flyer is part of a 9-piece collection published by the Arlington, Va.-based National Socialist White People’s Party headed by Matt Koehl 1970-71.

The Liberation Front was created by the Nazi group in 1969 as a student organization, mimicking left-wing student organizations such as W.E.B DuBois Clubs, affiliated with the Communist Party, and the Young Socialist Alliance, affiliated with the Socialist Workers Party.

It was during the early 70s that infamous KKK leader David Duke joined the National Socialist Liberation Front.

The group was established by NSWPP member Joseph Tommasi who developed personal and ideological differences with NSWPP commander Matt Koehl. Tommasi denounced Koehl and other members of the leadership at a party congress in 1970 and called for waging an immediate revolution.

He was nicknamed "Tomato Joe" by rival neo-Nazis because of his Italian heritage and "less than Nordic complexion." Koehl expelled Tommasi in 1973 for allegedly smoking marijuana and entertaining young women at party headquarters, as well as misusing party funds. Tommasi re-organized the Liberation Front in 1974 with two tiers—an above ground organization and an underground organization that would wage guerrilla style warfare.

On August 15, 1975, Tommasi was shot dead in the head by 18-year-old NSWPP member Jerry Keith Jones  in front of the NSWPP local headquarters in El Monte, CA during a confrontation. Jones later pleaded guilty to second degree murder for killing Tommasi and was sentenced to 300 days in the county jail.

Following Tommasi’s death, the group underwent several leadership changes and changes in tactics. In the mid 1980s, the group’s leader was arrested on a weapons charge and the Liberation Front fell apart.

Tommasi's life inspired fellow Neo-Nazi James Nolan Mason (born July 25, 1952) to revive the NSLF in the early 1980s (splinter group) as a  leaderless "philosophical concept or a state of mind" called Universal Order that promoted the teachings of mass murderer Charles Manson. Mason continues to be active as a leader on the extreme right, including helping to form the Atomwaffen, and his writings form the ideological and tactical underpinning of the more violent wing of the extreme right. Indoctrination started at a early age when in 1966, at 14 years old, he joined the youth movement of George Lincoln Rockwell's American Nazi Party.

Mason has become known as the "Godfather of Fascist Terrorism" and was recently (2021) sanctioned by the Canadian Gov't on its list of terror-related entities.

Two of Rockwell's associates, Matthias Koehl and William Luther Pierce, formed their own organizations. Koehl, who was Rockwell's successor, renamed the National Socialist White Peoples Party (NSWPP) to the "New Order" in 1983 and relocated it to Wisconsin. The name change reflected the group's Nazi mysticism and it was still known by that name in 2010.

Rockwell was assassinated in Arlington, Virginia, shopping center enroute to a laundromat by a bullet fired from a rooftop through his car windshield piercing his heart on August 25, 1967 by John Patsalos (born Yanacki Christos Patsalos January 6, 1938) aka John Patler (ex-Marine/neo-Nazi) using a 7.63mm German Mauser C96. Rockwell died amid a flurry of Ivory Snow soap flakes, which crippled his party, but of course not the ideology.


Patsalos was convicted of first degree murder in 1970, sentenced to 20 years, but somehow got paroled in August 1975, violated parole in 1976 for possession of marijuana and received an additional six-year sentence. He was later released (I think in 1983) and AFAIK he's still alive. More at Murderpedia.

In 2017, the Bezos' rag paper The Washington Post described Patsalos as a "staunch online defender of Donald Trump". Patsalos praised the marchers at the Unite the Right rally.

One of the most notorious comic books ever issued, in which Arlington milkman Lew Cor transforms into Whiteman by uttering the secret words ‘Lien Geis!' (‘Seig Heil' spelled backwards). (‘Lew Cor' was the one-time pseudonym of American Nazi Party founder George Lincoln Rockwell [‘Roc wel' spelled backwards].) In his swastika adorned outfit, Whiteman battles a group of black arsonists, the Jew from Outer Space, and Supercoon, although the Jew from Outer Space escapes while Whiteman is busy trying to suppress the black crime rate on Earth.


The comic book was the brainchild of American Nazi Party stalwart John Patler who was responsible for both the story and illustrations. The book was distributed by the Dallas branch of the ANP, which was run by married members Robert and Mary Surrey. In 1966, Rockwell moved the Party's business operations from party headquarters in Arlington to Dallas due to the seizure of its assets by the IRS in late 1965. So it's likely that the comic book was issued in 1966 instead of the 1965 date typically cited. Adverts for other Party paraphernalia include a ‘Boat Ticket to Africa', Stormtrooper magazine, and swastika armbands, all available from the Dallas branch.

Today the New Order operates quietly far from the public spotlight. The neo-Nazi group maintains a web page and a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, post office box providing information and template material promoting Nazism. It has no members but rather "registered supporters" who pledge to mail in donations on a monthly basis. Financing is also obtained through sales of books and other merchandise under an affiliate business, NS Publications of Wyandotte, Michigan. The NS Bulletin, a newsletter, is sent to supporters on a quarterly basis. The group holds occasional ceremonial gatherings at undisclosed private locations such as an annual observance of Hitler's birthday each April 20. Ha, that is 420 day and I assume no weed is allowed.

Feb 20, 1942: Edward "Butch" O'Hare (1914-1943) became an ace when he shot down five Jap bombers attacking USS Lexington. The U.S. Navy's first Medal of Honor recipient during WWII and also awarded the Navy Cross. O'Hare's final battle took place on the night of November 26, 1943, while he was leading the Navy's first-ever nighttime fighter attack launched from an aircraft carrier. During this encounter with a group of Jap torpedo bombers, O'Hare's Grumman F6F Hellcat was shot down; his aircraft was never found. In 1945, the U.S. Navy destroyer USS O'Hare (DD-889) was named in his honor. Chicago O'Hare International Airport is also named in his honor.



His father, Edward Joseph O'Hare had been Al Capone's lawyer, but was gunned down on November 8, 1939 after helping prosecutors convict Scarface of tax evasion. In the popular HBO series Boardwalk Empire, the character of Mike D'Angelo played by Louis Cancelmi is based on Edward J. O'Hare.

Feb 20, 1945: U.S. Marines (including my late uncle) landed on Iwo Jima. The Marines initially faced light resistance because the Japanese waited until the beaches were crowded with men and machinery before laying down heavy fire. A war correspondent described the landing as "a nightmare in hell."
At the same time my uncle landed on the beach, his brother was being carried off on a stretcher who survived. Later that day my uncle was shot by Jap sniper. Bullet entered just left side of his stomach and blew a baseball size hole out his back. It was clear through shot that somehow missed all vital organs. He was carried out, flown to Guam and from there flown to Tripler Army Medical Center in Oahu, Hawaii where he spent months in recovery. The day he arrived at Tripler was the same day my daughter was born at Tripler!




Feb 20, 1962: LtCol John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921 – Dec 8, 2016) orbited the earth three times. Glenn earned only $8 which included his basic pay and flight pay. The 5 hour flight was not long enough to earn a per diem. Plus he was not reimbursed for mileage because he flew a government vehicle. However, in 1974 he got a seat in the Senate and served till 1999.




Feb 20, 2008: USS Lake Erie (CG 70) launched a modified Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) to destroy a non-functioning National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) classified satellite USA-193 aka NRO Launch 21 (NROL-21) during Operation Burnt Frost.


The official mission story was described by the Missile Defense Agency as a "mission of safeguarding human life against the uncontrolled re-entry of a 5,000-pound satellite containing over 1,000 pounds of toxic hydrazine propellant". One-Time Mission: Operation Burnt Frost

The Kremlin claimed that this exercise was a test of the U.S. missile defense program. The defense ministry of Russia accused the U.S. of using hydrazine as a cover for the test of an ASAT. Other experts dismissed the threat of the hydrazine, suggesting that the effect of the cloud, when diluted over a large area, would likely be super mild posing no danger.

On the morning of Saturday, February 20, 1971, World War III panic began. Oh yes! It took them 40 minutes to correct this apocalyptic gaffe and by Sunday morning made front page headline news.



Code Word “Hatefulness”: The Great EBS Scare of 1971

On the morning of February 20th 1971 millions of Americans were enjoying what was shaping up to look like a totally normal day. People woke up, ate breakfast, and made their way to their daily obligations of school or a job expecting nothing out of the ordinary. One of the many adults spending that morning at work was Wayland S. Eberhardt, a civilian teletype operator with the National Emergency Warning Center at Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colorado. One of Eberhardt’s routine tasks was to run scheduled tests from the Emergency Broadcast System. It was a task that had been completed many times by the fifteen-year veteran of Cheyenne Mountain but on that February morning a simple mistake brought the entire county to its knees in a matter of seconds.

Founded in 1963, the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) was designed to transmit an Emergency Action Notification (EAN) across both television and radio which would allow the government to quickly reach the American people should an unspeakable situation arise. In the event of an emergency, an EAN was to be initiated by the National Emergency Warning Center located at Cheyenne Mountain and using teletype tape a message would be sent to Telex machines located in every broadcast station in the country that was part of the EBS. Each of these messages was accompanied by a code word that had to be looked up in a book or verified against a list of words inside a sealed envelope to ensure that it was genuine. These code words changed daily and the EBS was tested twice a week at specifically scheduled times to assure preparedness. On February 20th 1971 at 9:33 A.M. Eberhardt fed a tape into a teletype transmitter sending a message to 5,000 radio and 800 television stations across the United States. The problem was that he fed the wrong tape into the machines, one that told everyone to brace not for a test, but for news of an actual emergency.

All over the nation broadcast station Telex machines rang out bell sounds warning that an EBS message was coming. The words on the paper chilled those who read it to the bone:

“MESSAGE AUTHENTICATOR: HATEFULNESS/HATEFULNESS

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY ACTION NOTIFICATION (EAN) DIRECTED BY THE PRESIDENT. NORMAL BROADCASTING WILL CEASE IMMEDIATELY. ALL STATIONS WILL BROADCAST EAN MESSAGE ONE PRECEDED BY THE ATTENTION SIGNAL, PER FCC RULES. ONLY STATIONS HOLDING NDEA MAY STAY ON AIR IN ACCORD WITH THEIR STATE EBS PLAN.

The EBS message received by stations, code word “Hatefulness”

Undoubtedly made even more sinister by the code word of that day, “Hatefulness”, the message sent the readers into a state of panic as they quickly clamored to verify the term to make sure that this was definitely not a drill. When the code word was authenticated the fear became widespread. David Skinner, the news director of WEVA in Emporia, Virginia later told a reporter: “I thought I was going to have a heart attack trying to open that damned envelope. I haven’t felt that way since John Kennedy was killed.” Another station manager later said he and his coworkers felt as if they were experiencing the attack on Pearl Harbor all over again. Even though the code words matched there was still some confusion, was it a coincidence that the EBS warning happened to come out at the same time as the scheduled test? Some argued that if it was an actual emergency the bells that warned of the incoming message were supposed to ring more times than they had that morning. Other stations could not locate their lists to authenticate the code word and others simply refused to go off the air as instructed. Broadcasters and listeners waited together in fear wondering what could have happened that was serious enough to trigger a real warning from the EBS. Where was the President with his message? Were we at war? Was there an unavoidable nuclear attack on the horizon? In a country that was still dealing with the looming threat of the Cold War anything seemed possible.

Panic was also running wild at Cheyenne Mountain where people were desperately trying to get the word out that the emergency message was in fact a mistake. A new message was sent out telling stations to ignore the previous warning:

THIS IS THE NATIONAL WARNING CENTER – CANCEL EAN TAPE SENT AT 9:33 EST

However, the cancellation message was also supposed to have a code word to verify it and without that code word, “impish”, the warning was to be ignored. At 9:59 A.M. the National Emergency Warning Center tried sending another message to ignore the warning and decided to use the code word “hatefulness” again. Since this was the same code word found in the original warning the stations again ignored the message. Finally, at 10:13 A.M., nearly forty minutes after the crippling EBS message went out, a new message containing the correct code was sent:

“MESSAGE AUTHENTICATOR: IMPISH/IMPISH

CANCEL MESSAGE SENT AT 09:33EST REPEAT CANCEL MESSAGE SENT AT 09:33EST

MESSAGE AUTHENTICATOR: IMPISH/IMPISH

A failed attempt to cancel the warning using “Hatefulness” a second time

The country gave out a collective sigh of relief, waited for their nerves to calm, and returned to their day. Secretary of State Melvin Laird stated that there would be an investigation of what caused the false alarm and the Pentagon released a statement saying:

“The Office of Civil Defense is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the transmittal of the erroneous message. The National Emergency Warning System is located within the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain complex but is not a NORAD function. It is operated by the the U.S. Army’s Strategic Communications Command. This is a civil defense action and not a military one.”

As for the crew in Cheyenne Mountain, Eberhardt was severely shaken up by his mistake and later told newspapers that he genuinely did not know how he accidently fed that message into the machine. The chief of the National Emergency Warning Center did not fire Eberhardt, but took the entire episode as evidence that he had to find a way to make the system foolproof. His solution? To move the actual emergency message tapes away from their location next to the transmitter and seal them in envelopes inside a nearby cabinet. It proved to be a simple and effective solution.

On February 19, 1971, the first warrant to search a computer was issued by a court in Santa Clara County, California. Seeking evidence in a case of stolen software worth $15,000, police confiscated magnetic tapes and a directory of files on a Univac Fastrand mass storage system.


In line with the technology of the times, the crime was discovered when a technician operating UNIVAC systems 1108 computer (pictured in the featured image) found a set of punch cards connected to the device.

The film combines elements of documentary, horror and apocalyptic prophecy to present a gripping satirical depiction of the struggle for survival between humans and insects.

Hellstrom's Hive is a 1973 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. It is about a secret group of humans who model their lives upon social insects and the unsettling events that unfold after they are discovered by a deep undercover agency of the U.S. government. Dr. Nils Hellstrom, an entomologist, is a successful film maker and influential scientific advisor with strong political ties. Living and working with a small staff on a farm in rural Oregon, he attracts the attention of an unnamed government organisation when documents are discovered that hint on cult-like activities and a secret weapon project.

An operative from the government is sent, but is quickly assassinated by Hellstrom's operatives. Further operatives are sent and it is revealed that the farm is situated above a vast system of tunnels and caves, hosting a hive-like subterranean society of nearly 50,000 specialized hybrid human-insect workers. Hellstrom, thanks to advanced bioengineering, has been the appointed hive leader for more than 100 years. He is completely convinced of the superiority of the hive and its abandonment of conventional morals and ethics: sexuality or violence, indeed, any individual action, is rated strictly whether it strengthens or weakens the hive as a whole. The government spies soon learn the hive has progressed to using sexual "stumps," both male and female — "the stump of a human body from about the waist to the knees" — as a method of harvesting "wild" genes or maintaining certain breeding lines when the individuals are no longer trustworthy members of the hive. The hive have also developed a secret weapon that it will use to displace humans as the dominant intelligent species on the planet.

The story is told from various perspectives of members of both the nameless organisation investigating the farm and plotting against each other, as well as Hellstrom and several high-ranking hive members collectively dealing with the threat of being discovered and probably extinguished by "the wild ones". In the end, the hive's weapon project is ready to protect the hive and the upcoming 'swarming' - the gradual displacement of individual-based humanity.

David L. Wolper's quasi-documentary film The Hellstrom Chronicle, released in 1971, was the inspiration for Herbert's novel. In an interview with Tim O'Reilly, Herbert stated: "I said, 'In terms of what we want now, as we think of our world now, what would be the most horrible kind of civilization you could imagine?' And then I said, 'Now I will make... [the members of that civilization] the heroes of the story, by taking negative elements of the surrounding society and treating them as the villain.' That creates a very peculiar kind of tension."

With the success of DUNE I wonder if they'll ever adapt Hellstrom's Hive.
I mean with all the high octane UFO hive-mind lore from black project bioengineering gene harvesting to a secret subterranean society of hybrid human-insect slaves it would be very fitting in today's sci-fi media maelstrom. With the right director & actors this could be an Oscar hit!

Charles Adams Claverie (August 28, 1949 – October 7, 2005), known by stage names Charlie Hamburger, Charlie Kennedy and Charles Rocket. Shortly after his firing from SNL, Charles Rocket showed up in TV ads for the soon-to-fold Washington Star which went out of business in August 1981. Rocket later appeared in EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY. Feb 22, 1957: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN opened at the Globe in New York City.



When originally released theatrically in the UK, the BBFC made cuts to secure an 'A' rating. All cuts were waived in 2006 when the film was re-rated with a 'PG' certificate for home video. Note: The running time on the BBFC website for the 1957 theatrical release mentions a run time of 91 minutes 48 seconds with an indication this is the submitted run time prior to any cuts. It is not clear if this was a longer version of the film which is widely known to run just 81 minutes (77 minutes on PAL media).

Lock Martin aka Joseph Lockard Martin (October 12, 1916 – January 19, 1959) was one of the tallest actors ever, at 7′ 4″ (wiki says 7' 7" and the DVD commentary says  7' 1") he held various odd jobs before his debut on the silver screen. He worked for Spike Jones and his City Slickers, Ardens Dairy (in California,) as a Cowboy for Public Relations and at Knotts Berry Farm, (in California) also as a Cowboy. It was while he was working as a doorman at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood that his height was noticed and because of it he was chosen for the role of Gort. He also hosted a children's TV show in the Los Angeles area in the 50s called 'The Gentle Giant'. Father of nine children.

USS McCampbell (DDG 85) "Relentless in Battle" is an Arleigh Burke-class Flight IIA guided missile destroyer leaving Pearl Harbor - February 20, 2024:


She is named in honor of Naval Aviator Captain David S. McCampbell (January 16, 1910 – June 30, 1996), a Medal of Honor and Navy Cross recipient who was the Navy's leading ace in World War II. Legendary McCampbell is the US Navy's all-time leading flying ace (called Ace of the Aces in the Navy) and top F6F Hellcat ace with 34 aerial victories. He was the third-highest American scoring ace of World War II and the highest-scoring American ace to survive the war. He also set a United States single mission aerial combat record of shooting down nine enemy planes in one mission, on October 24, 1944, at the beginning of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in the Philippines who became the only American airman to achieve "ace in a day" status twice!

He retired from the Navy in 1964 with 31 years of service. He died in Florida in 1996 and was interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Commissioned on 17 August 2002. In July 2020 the ship left Yokosuka, Japan for Portland, Oregon to begin a midlife update at Vigor Shipyards. On Feb 5, 2024: The U.S. Navy announced that USS McCampbell will forward deploy to Yokosuka, Japan. McCampbell maintains on board an active VBSS team to conduct anti piracy, anti-smuggling, and anti-terrorist operations.

The light blue band refers to the Pacific theater, where Captain McCampbell's served as commander of Air Group 15. In the band, there are thirty-four stars representing the number of enemy aircraft Captain McCampbell destroyed in air to air combat. This distinguished him as the leading naval ace in World War II. The Roman numeral “XV” signifies the “Fabled Fifteen” which embarked on USS Essex. The Navy Cross with a Silver Star center symbolize Captain McCampbell's bravery during combat in the Philippines.

The reversed star refers to Captain McCampbell's Medal of Honor which was awarded for heroism in both the first and second battles of the Philippine Sea. The sea lion represents the Republic of the Philippines government seal. Two tridents, symbolizing sea prowess, surround the star and signifying the AEGIS system's firepower and strike capability. Representing the United States coat of arms is the winged shield to symbolize naval aviator wings which was Captain McCampbell's area of specialty.

Happy National Tootsie Roll Day! During the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in 1950, U.S. Marines called for more "Tootsie Rolls" which was the code for 60mm mortar ammo. A radio operator was unfamiliar with the code, so the Marines instead received a large airdrop of the chewy candy.


However, the Marines welcomed the Tootsie Rolls because the candy provided a much-need energy boost. They also found that Tootsie Rolls were useful for plugging bullet holes in their equipment.

Cary Stewart, a 92-year-old Korean War Veteran and Marine is among the “Chosin” few who have been receiving big packages of Tootsie Rolls for several years now.

Frank Nicholas Stanton (March 20, 1908 – December 24, 2006) was an American broadcasting executive who served as the president of CBS between 1946 and 1971 and then as vice chairman until 1973. He also served as the chairman of the Rand Corporation from 1961 until 1967.

The philanthropic Stanton Foundation was created upon his death. "The grant allows the ARL of Boston to develop the first-in-the-nation Center for Shelter Dogs." The Animal Rescue League of Boston

On October 5, 2011 the Stanton Foundation awarded the Wikimedia Foundation $3.6 million, the foundation's largest-ever grant. The Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic at the Ohio State University was named in his honor when it opened in spring 2021.

As president of CBS, Stanton's greatest battle with the government occurred in 1971, and focused on just this parallel to print press rights. The controversy surrounded "The Selling of the Pentagon," a CBS Reports documentary, which exposed the huge expenditure of public funds, partly illegal, to promote militarism. The confrontation raised the issue of whether television news programming deserved protection under the First Amendment.

The program came under intense criticism from two men who appeared on the program, from the House of Representatives, other media and some prominent politicians. Daniel Henkins, Undersecretary of Defense for Public Relations, charged that statements from his interview with Roger Mudd about his work had been doctored, as did Col. John MacNeil, who accused CBS of rearranging his comments in a speech he gave about the situation in Southeast Asia. The Investigations Subcommittee of the House Commerce Committee subpoenaed CBS's outtakes to determine whether or not distortion had taken place.

Meanwhile, critics at the Washington Post and Time magazine, while not taking issue with the thesis of "Selling" that the Pentagon was engaging in propaganda, objected to the editing techniques employed in its production. The program was also criticized by Vice President Spiro Agnew and Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird.

Against threat of jail, Stanton refused the subpoena from the House Commerce Committee ordering him to provide copies of the outtakes and scripts from the documentary. He claimed that such materials are protected by the freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment. Stanton observed that if such subpoena actions were allowed, there would be a "chilling effect" upon broadcast journalism.

For his efforts in that situation, Stanton was awarded one of three personal Peabody Awards (the others coming in 1959 and 1960). He also shared two other Peabodys that were awarded to CBS as a network.

In an early stage of researching the documentary, Peter, or one of his associates, found vivid confirmation of the view that the Pentagon had been engaged in public relations activities for along time. They found an article in the New York Times quoting Democratic congressman F. Edward Hebert from Louisiana:

It is about time the American public be informed as to the identity of individuals and what it costs the taxpayers to maintain and support this gigantic and colossal propaganda machine on the banks of the Potomac.
...Since the exposé of waste in the military and its effect on the taxpayers' pocketbook has been so vividly brought to the attention of the American people by the committee I head, all the faucets have been turned on by the Pentagon propagandists, alibi artists, and apologists.

The date of this statement was February 26, 1952. The reference to the "gigantic and colossal propaganda machine" and to the "exposé" was not to our "The Selling of the Pentagon," of course, because it was not broadcast until nineteen years later. Rather, it was in reference to the results of an investigation by the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Waste. Congressman Hebert was the chairman of that subcommittee.

Ironically, two decades later, it was this same Congressman Hebert who filed afairness complaint with the FCC against "The Selling of the Pentagon" ; the same Congressman Hebert who condemned CBS News and the documentary as "un-American" and "Goebbels-like"; and the same Congressman Hebert who was so instrumental in persuading the Investigations Subcommittee of the House Commerce Committee to undertake its investigation of CBS in the spring of 1971.

After about ayear of research, filming, and editing, "The Selling of the Pentagon" was first broadcast on February 23, 1971. It focused on the Pentagon's public relations efforts, which ranged from distributing propaganda movies to holding military demonstrations around the country. As is usual with television documentaries, relatively few viewers (only several million) watched the initial broadcast.

The New York Times reviewer and many other television critics praised the broadcast. (It was given all the major awards that year.) But others criticized it—including Congressman Hebert, Vice President Agnew, and Melvin Laird, the secretary of defense. CBS News, in its regular news broadcasts, reported these criticisms.

The controversy it engendered was so great that we decided to re-broadcast it amonth later. This time, the audience was half again as large as it was for the first broadcast. At the end of the second broadcast, we included atwenty-two-minute addendum, which included statements by some of the documentary's main critics, and a five-minute reply by me. In it I said:

No one has refuted the essential accuracy of "The Selling of the Pentagon." You have seen and you have heard Pentagon activities for yourselves: the manipulation of news, the staging of events, and the selling of the Pentagon's points of view. None of our critics has said that these things didn't happen or weren't done—and so the validity of the broadcast stands unscathed.

Red Nightmare is the best-known title of the 1962 Armed Forces Information Film (AFIF) 120, Freedom and You. Made for the Department of Defense, the short film was produced to mold public opinion against communism. The film was later released to American television and as an educational film to American schools under the Red Nightmare title.

Sea story Sunday: Operation "Paintshop" in 1978 Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm FG.1 Phantoms of No. 892 Naval Air Squadron back on board the carrier HMS Ark Royal (R09) after a visit to a US Naval Air Station (NAVSTA) Oceana Virginia Beach, Virginia where they worked up with USS Saratoga (CV-60). The Royal Navy roundels had been "zapped" and replaced with interwar American Navy "meatball" insignia, and on XV590 001/R, the "Royal Navy" flash had been replaced with one for the "Colonial Navy." That's what happens when the Royal Navy visits their American brethren...

Feb 25, 1933: USS Ranger (CV-4) was launched. Ranger was the first U.S. ship to be designed and built from the keel up as a carrier. She was one of only three U.S. carriers commissioned before 1941 to survive WWII. Deemed too slow for the Pacific Theater, she served mostly in the Atlantic where the German fleet, the Kriegsmarine, was a weaker opponent. In October 1943, she fought in Operation Leader, air attacks on German shipping off Norway. She was sold for scrap in 1947.

The Saratoga (CV-3) carrier was sunk by an atomic bomb test, in Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll.

She survived the first atomic airburst detonation on July 1, 1946. The first test was named "Able." The bomb was named "Gilda" after Rita Hayworth's character in the 1946 film, Gilda, and was dropped from the B-29 Superfortress Dave's Dream of the 509th Bombardment Group. 5 ships sunk in that blast including one (USS LSM-60, WW II era amphibious assault ship) that was presumed completely vaporized as no particle of her has ever been found. The plane, formerly known as Big Stink, had been the photographic equipment aircraft on the Nagasaki mission in 1945.

A second nuke test "Baker" and the bomb known as "Helen of Bikini" was done on 25 July 1946, this time an underwater atomic detonation which sank the Saratoga along with 9 other warships including Japanese and German. Both nukes were 23-kiloton yield, about the same as "Fat Man" dropped on Nagasaki.

After a year and then some of digging for the "Atomic Goddess" Rita Hayworth image purportedly painted on the bomb, Gilda was discovered in 2013. Below images are stills captured from a film roll that came from the Los Alamos National Laboratory that happened to be dropped in a nuke researcher's email box. The film was found by Atomic documentarian Peter Kuran of Atom Central. His Youtube channel if interested.

A few guys who were still alive in the 21st century remembered it as only a stencil of the name "GILDA" was marked on the bomb, while a few others remembered it being a painting of Rita. So, the final mystery then is where did this particular Rita Hayworth image come from? After a few scholar's went on a Rita hunting expedition through meticulous scrolling archives, the elusive photograph appeared on page 78 of the June 1946 edition of Esquire magazine! The pin-up, credited to legendary Hollywood photographer Bob Coburn (1900-1990), was a dead ringer for the image on the bomb.

First came the "GILDA" stencil then came the Rita painting.

Uruguay joins the Space brothers order...

WASHINGTON — Uruguay signed the Artemis Accords outlining best practices in space exploration Feb. 15, the second country in as many weeks to do so.

In a ceremony at NASA Headquarters, Omar Paganini, foreign minister of Uruguay, signed the Accords on the behalf of the country. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and other officials from both the United States and Uruguay attended the signing.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to introduce space cooperation as a new chapter in the robust bilateral agenda between Uruguay and the U.S.,” Paganini said in a statement about the signing, calling it “the beginning of a new bilateral track” of cooperation between the countries.

Uruguay does not have a significant space program, but announced last year plans to establish a national space agency. Uruguay has hosted the headquarters of Satellogic, a company developing a constellation of Earth observation satellites, although the company said in September it planned to redomicile the company in the United States to allow it to compete for U.S. government business.

The signing took place as part of bilateral ministerial meetings between the United States and Uruguay. In a readout of those meetings, the U.S. State Department said the United States “agreed to support Uruguay exploring civilian and commercial space industries,” but did not elaborate on those plans.

“The United States and Uruguay share a commitment to democracy and peace, and now, we expand these principles in the cosmos to commit to the safe and transparent exploration of space,” Nelson said in a statement about the signing.

Uruguay is the 36th country to sign the Accords, established in 2020, and the second in as many weeks after Greece signed the documents Feb. 9. The signatories range from countries with advanced space programs to those like Uruguay that are only starting to develop space capabilities.

The Artemis Accords outline best practices for countries to follow in space exploration activities, building upon the Outer Space Treaty and other international agreements on topics ranging from registration of space objects to utilization of space resources.

In his fifth-century commentary on Ezekiel’s vision of New Jerusalem, Jerome quotes the Aeneid, likening the path of salvation to a minotaur’s maze: “‘As once in lofty Crete the labyrinth is said to have had a route woven of blind walls’ . . . . So I, ente[r] the ocean of those scriptures and, so to speak, the labyrinth of God’s mysteries, of whom it is said ‘He made darkness his covert’ and ‘there are clouds in his circuit’”.

This 1705 maze (Dool-hoff), signed by the Dutch Catholic printer Claes Braau, also comes with clouded pathways, but here the way to New Jerusalem is cobbled by didactic verse. The broadsheet’s four dead-ends are burnished with spiritual gravity by its epigraphs: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14.12) and “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise” (Ephesian 5:15). Each pathway is paved with texts that narrate vocational and moral choices at various lengths. The road dedicated to economic wealth is full of twists and turns, but ultimately leads to the same fate as the short meander through a trench describing vanity: your journey’s abrupt termination. Choosing the “wrong path” forces the puzzler to backtrack, should they want to meet the Lamb of God at the maze’s center. Luckily, there are many ways to reach salvation, such as by studying the seven liberal arts.

The Dool-hoff was published in Haarlem during a period when neighboring Amsterdam was awash with secular mazes. “Doolhof inns”, a type of surreal public house, became increasingly popular in the seventeenth-century, treating tipsy patrons to mechanical statues, uncanny waxworks, and disorienting hedge mazes.

Scholars are not sure who designed this Dool-hoff. While the text is credited to H. A. Hoejewilt, the name seems to be a bibliographic dead-end (Hoe je wilt means “However you want” in Dutch). Only a few copies survive. While the version above comes courtesy of the Rijksmuseum, Jeff Saward offers a detailed description of an earlier specimen, discovered in the recycled backmatter papering a book of Quaker minutes, which can be read and viewed here. Dool-Hoff: A Dutch Maze with New Jerusalem at its Centre (1705)

Originally translated by British historian and linguist Robert Nisbet Bain in 1894, this collection of stories hail from an area known to us today as western Ukraine. ⁠In his introduction Bain describes the tales as being translated from “Ruthenian” (an exonymic lingonym for a language that would become Ukrainian) and gathered from three “chief collections” of folklore by Panteleimon Kulish, Ivan Rudchenko, and Mykhailo Drahomanov.

The tales featured include familiar characters and fairy tale tropes, such as a tale of a mysterious sack which grants food, a ram which gives gold, and a drum that summons henchmen who give people a good beating. This last tale can also be found in a version called "The Wishing-Table, the Gold-Ass, and the Cudgel in the Sack" by the brothers Grimm. In "The Story of little Tsar Novishny, the False sister, and the Faitful Beasts" and "The Vampire and St. Michael", the act of not crossing oneself before drinking or bathing in a stream or river leads to being possessed by the Devil, something we should all keep in mind.

This edition from 1916 is adorned with beautiful illustrations from Scottish artist Noel Laura Nisbet (who also illustrated a 1915 collection of Russian folktales, also translated by Bain.

Janet Fay Simmons, R&B Mystery Woman, born February 25, 1932, passed away May 17, 2000 in Philadelphia. Simmons first recorded in 1954.  A number of Bomb songs were released (and, in some cases, such as this one, was not released) that took full advantage of the atomic sex motif. And no other female artist gave better voice to the suggestive power of the Bomb than Faye Simmons. The sultry and ridiculous lyrics "Want to hug and kiss you and give you a squeeze. You make me radioactive all in my knees" and the song's distinctive roller rink organ accompaniment is almost enough to justify the expense of the Manhattan Project.

"Recorded at the Reco-Art Studios in Philadelphia on August 23, 1954 at 8pm with an unknown band."  Not released until 1991 on a CD compilation "Talk To Me Daddy" by UK label Flyright Records. Too bad. I'm sure it would of been a hit back in the 50s.





Not much is known about Fay Simmons (no publicity photos, that's not her on the above album cover, no obituary) other than that she recorded on a number of Philadelphia-based labels including Grand with Philadelphia's own The Night Riders Orchestra on Whim, Wham Whop (1954). Her discography up till around 1964. More on the mystery singer here.


Ray (Stalin Kicked The Bucket) Anderson (1924-2010) returned to topical recording in this 1958 masterpiece of hillbilly paranoia concerning the second Russian satellite. In the frantically paced song, the singer wonders aloud if Sputnik 2 is "atomic" and then, for no apparent reason, champions the "American hound dog" over the Soviet "mutnik," Laika. If ever there was a song that illustrates the absurdity of the space race, this is it.

What else can they put in lab-grown meat? Will it fatten up a human race for the ET culling?

SEOUL — Sitting in a coffee shop near one of Seoul’s most prestigious universities, Jinkee Hong carefully pondered the right words to describe the aroma and flavor of his lab creation: a bowl of pink rice.

“Although it hasn’t been approved for public consumption, I have personally tasted it. I might say it smells something like beef,” he said in a Zoom video call, adding that it was rather bland.

But flavor isn’t Hong’s focus. It’s what’s attached to the rice — lab-grown animal protein — and what it means about the future of food.
“I believe, in the future, this can make the world a better place in terms of sustainability and food safety,” he said.

Hong, a professor in Yonsei University’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, worked with colleagues to grow beef cells inside of rice grains coated in fish gelatin and familiar food-grade enzymes. The end result: a bowl of rice that has 8 percent more protein than a normal serving and produces the same amount of carbon emissions as the grain crop, a staple food for about half of the world’s population. The findings were published in a paper that Hong co-authored in the journal Matter this month.

“I’m a polymer engineer, and not a nutritionist or food expert,” Hong said. “An 8 percent increase in protein may not seem significant, but the fact that actual animal protein can be consumed through rice is important.”

“This is the vision that the whole field is aspiring toward, for sure,” said Amy Rowat, a professor of integrative biology and physiology at the University of California at Los Angeles. “The million-dollar question is, when will we see this in your grocery store? I think we are still some ways away.”

For at least 10 years, scientists around the world have been looking for the right “scaffolding” — what some call a “microcarrier” — upon which they can raise cultured animal protein and fat cells. In 2013, a scientist from the Netherlands attracted international attention when he grew a hamburger patty in a Petri dish and then presented it for a guest to eat it on live television. The beef patty cells were harvested after they proliferated on the surface of inedible microbeads.

Cultivated meats have attracted billions of dollars in investment but are still costly to produce and difficult to scale. Only two countries in the world — the United States and Singapore — allow consumers to buy them. Some companies are working on new, hybrid products: for example, plant-based meat with animal fat incorporated for taste. But even sales of plant-based meat alternatives have slid after a strong market debut.

At least half of all U.S. adults in a 2023 survey said they were “not at all likely” to try lab-grown meat. Among them, 56 percent said it “just sounds weird,” and nearly half said they weren’t convinced eating it would be safe.

“Definitely, one of the hurdles is public perception. … The taste and disgust factor is something that comes up often,” Rowat said. “If you call a food ‘lab-grown,’ that is not an incentivizing factor and it doesn’t really convey how the meat is actually produced.”

“But if you eat Doritos, for example, so much science is poured into that food — and people are more willing to accept it.”

For now, Hong’s rice is not ready for supermarket shelves, but he hopes to tinker with the ratio of protein and fat cells to maximize its nutritional value and improve the taste, which carries flavors of almond from the muscle protein cells and butter from the fat cells. It doesn’t quite taste like beef, he said, because there is no blood.

“If I were a chef,” he said, “I may have to use some seasoning to make it feel very delicious.”

What a lab-made meat-rice hybrid says about the future of food

Now the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), the UK’s government-approved film regulator, seems to agree that Mary Poppins is racist – although not for its alleged ‘blackface’. This week, the BBFC raised the film’s age rating from U to PG due to its ‘discriminatory language’.

The language in question is the rather archaic racial slur ‘hottentot’. This was once used by Europeans to describe indigenous South Africans as primitive barbarians. In the film, it is uttered by a senile man.

The BBFC is convinced that children could find this term ‘distressing’, although it seems unlikely they will even know what it means. Indeed, this is probably why it has hidden in plain sight for so many decades – and why most modern parents are still comfortable showing the film to children.

Feb 28, 1932: James Chadwick's discovery of neutrons became public. Chadwick had observed radiation after bombarding beryllium with helium nuclei, which he explained as a particle with no charge and with a mass similar to the proton’s.


Although the neutron is a senior citizen of sorts, whose existence was predicted in 1920 and confirmed in 1932, it’s still not fully understood.

It was James Chadwick of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory who, after nearly a decade of experimentation, devised a method to detect these particles, which have essentially the same mass as the proton but no electrical charge. Not only did Chadwick’s triumph earn him the Nobel Prize in Physics three years later, it also gave him and the physics community a new particle to play with.

Flipping back in time, did you know German spy Anton Dilger (13 Feb 1884 – 17 Oct 1918), a young American doctor cultivated anthrax & other biological agents in his Washington, DC home that were used to kill thousands of horses & mules in the US bound for Allied forces in Europe during WWI? It was a deadly effective operation. From late 1915 and well into 1916, thousands of horses and mules were killed by the biological agents. There were human victims as well, including at least four individuals killed while working near the animal corrals during the winter of 1915. According to the National Counterintelligence and Security Center's exhibit on German sabotage in the US in WWI.


His father, Hubert Dilger, was a United States Army captain who had received the Medal of Honor for his work as an artilleryman at the Battle of Chancellorsville (1863) during the American Civil War. Anton eventually fled to Madrid, Spain, where he died during the 1918 flu pandemic.

Apple Inc. is canceling a decadelong effort to build an electric car, according to people with knowledge of the matter, abandoning one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the company.

Apple made the disclosure internally Tuesday, surprising the nearly 2,000 employees working on the project, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the announcement wasn’t public. The decision was shared by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, a vice president in charge of the effort, according to the people.

The two executives told staffers that the project will begin winding down and that many employees on the car team — known as the Special Projects Group, or SPG — will be shifted to the artificial intelligence division under executive John Giannandrea. Those employees will focus on generative AI projects, an increasingly key priority for the company.

Elon Musk, head of Tesla Inc., also celebrated the move. He shared a post on the X social media site with a saluting emoji and a cigarette.

The decision to ultimately wind down the project is a bombshell for the company, ending a multibillion-dollar effort called Project Titan that would have vaulted Apple into a whole new industry. The tech giant started working on a car around 2014, setting its sights on a fully autonomous electric vehicle with a limousine-like interior and voice-guided navigation.

But the project struggled nearly from the start, with Apple changing the team’s leadership and strategy several times. Lynch and Williams took charge of the undertaking a few years ago — following the departure of Doug Field, now a senior executive at Ford Motor Co.

Ultimately, focusing on AI may be a better bet, Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Anurag Rana and Andrew Girard said in a note. “Apple’s decision to abandon electric cars and shift resources toward generative AI is a good strategic move, we believe, given the long-term profitability potential of AI revenue streams versus cars.”
