Oct 22, 1962: JFK delivered his historic address on Cuba. Channel 4 in Boston ran a CONELRAD PSA prior to the speech. "The pooled broadcast from Washington carried the rousing notes of the Star Spangled Banner as the flag waved in the breeze and marching troops in the background."

Good evening my fellow citizens:

This Government, as promised, has maintained the closest surveillance of the Soviet Military buildup on the island of Cuba. Within the past week, unmistakable evidence has established the fact that a series of offensive missile sites is now in preparation on that imprisoned island. The purpose of these bases can be none other than to provide a nuclear strike capability against the Western Hemisphere.

Upon receiving the first preliminary hard information of this nature last Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., I directed that our surveillance be stepped up. And having now confirmed and completed our evaluation of the evidence and our decision on a course of action, this Government feels obliged to report this new crisis to you in fullest detail.

The characteristics of these new missile sites indicate two distinct types of installations. Several of them include medium range ballistic missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead for a distance of more than 1,000 nautical miles. Each of these missiles, in short, is capable of striking Washington, D.C., the Panama Canal, Cape Canaveral, Mexico City, or any other city in the southeastern part of the United States, in Central America, or in the Caribbean area.

The size of this undertaking makes clear that it has been planned for some months. Yet only last month, after I had made clear the distinction between any introduction of ground-to-ground missiles and the existence of defensive antiaircraft missiles, the Soviet Government publicly stated on September 11, and I quote, "the armaments and military equipment sent to Cuba are designed exclusively for defensive purposes," that, and I quote the Soviet Government, "there is no need for the Soviet Government to shift its weapons . . . for a retaliatory blow to any other country, for instance Cuba," and that, and I quote their government, "the Soviet Union has so powerful rockets to carry these nuclear warheads that there is no need to search for sites for them beyond the boundaries of the Soviet Union." Today we remember the 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and 3 US Soldiers who died 40 years ago in the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. It was the largest loss of life for Marines in a single day since Iwo Jima in 1945. A French Army barracks in Lebanon was also hit that same morning, killing 58 troops.

In the early 1960s, WerBell planned a coup of Haiti, known as Project Nassau, which was to be funded by CBS News so they could film the action.

In 1956, there was a TV show called "The World We Want" in which high school students from all over the world were invited to the United States to have candid discussions on social issues and current events.

One student by the name of Raul Contreras from the Philippines sat down with three other students from Indonesia (Ratnati Iskandar Dinata), Japan (Yoriko Konishi), and the UK (Judith Reader). They were asked to share their own prejudices.

Contreras began by facing Konishi and saying, "Being brutally frank, I am prejudiced against Japanese. Not to the extent that I hate them, but I got this as a result of World War II."

Despite his anger, Contreras also took the time to express empathy towards the Japanese civilians of post-war Japan and their struggles to help pay war reparations. "Most of them even have to suffer the cold in the classrooms because they can't afford to heat the schools," he said.

The conversation amongst the students soon turned to that of skin color and segregation in American society. The below clip shows Contreras highlighting the hypocrisy in America's pledge of allegiance, which states "liberty and justice for all." Raul went on to become a crisis communication expert.

The results of the Arab Barometer survey paint a bleak picture of Gaza in the days before the October 7 attacks. The Hamas government, unable to address citizens’ vital concerns, had lost the public’s confidence. It was a face-off between lawmen Wyatt Earp, his two brothers Virgil and Morgan, and their friend Doc Holliday, against members of the Cowboys, including the McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton. In a brief but intense shootout lasting about 30 seconds, Billy Clanton and both McLaurys were killed. Virgil and Morgan Earp were wounded, while Doc Holliday received a minor injury. The shootout was because of escalated tensions between the outlaws and the lawmen. "I'm your huckleberry."

October 26, 1972: The National Park Service began offering guided tours of Alcatraz Island, once home to a notorious federal penitentiary. Located in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz had held some of America's most infamous criminals, including Al Capone. It closed as a prison in 1963 and later became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The tours highlighted the prison's history, from its cells to tales of famous inmates and escape attempts. Been here several times and it is a weird, eerie, haunting experience.

At the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis senior aides to President John F. Kennedy began receiving pink identification cards and packets of information instructing them on where to go in the event of an emergency. Special Assistant to the President, David Powers asked at the time: “What happens to our wives and kids?” It fell to President Kennedy’s naval aide, Captain Tazewell Shepard, to address the massive morale gap of what to do with the “dependents.” The young officer responded with a plan to have the family members of select White House staff assemble in a fenced-in area at Washington’s Reno Reservoir for a motorcade ride out of the city to an undisclosed relocation site. The call to convene at the reservoir would have come in the form of a “Civil Defense Alert.” Assuming that the rest of Washington (and the world) would be privy to such an alert, it is interesting to note that Captain Shepard does not include a Plan B to address the inevitable D.C. evacuation gridlock and general panic.

Tazewell T. Shepard Jr., a retired two-star Navy rear admiral who was awarded the Navy Cross for for bravery during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. He was a naval aide to President John F. Kennedy, from 1961 to 1963. Died June 21, 2013 at a rehabilitation center in Huntsville, Ala. He was 92.

In 1961, a casting call went out for a black cat to fill the lead role in an Edgar Allen Poe movie adaptation of his 1843 short story “The Black Cat.” The film was called “Tales of Terror” which appeared in movies in 1962. Exactly 152 black cats showed up for the audition, all of them "considerably less nervous than their owners." Several of the black cats were disqualified for having white paws or noses. Despite the casting call, the role went to a black cat that did not audition but was already a "well-known" professional cat. However, seven of the black cats that auditioned that day were chosen as understudies to the professional. Many of the cats’ owners went to great lengths throughout the audition to not let any black cats cross their paths.






October 27, 312: Roman Emperor Constantine the Great experienced a significant vision before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. He saw a cross of light in the sky with the inscription "In hoc signo vinces" (In this sign, you will win) [actually was in Greek]. Moved by this vision, Constantine had his soldiers mark their shields with the Chi-Rho, a Christian symbol. The following day, he defeated his rival Maxentius in battle, a victory many attribute to this divine intervention.



This vision was a turning point not only for Constantine but also for Christianity. Constantine's victory and subsequent conversion to Christianity led to the Edict of Milan in 313, which declared religious tolerance for Christianity within the Roman Empire.

Oct 27, 1962: Russian submarine officer Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov (30 January 1926 – 19 August 1998) SAVED THE WORLD (or so the story goes) during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

On 27 October 1962, Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov was on board the Soviet submarine B-59 near Cuba when the US forces began dropping non-lethal depth charges. While the action was designed to encourage the Soviet submarines to surface, the crew of B-59 had been incommunicado and so were unaware of the intention. They thought they were witnessing the beginning of a third world war.

Trapped in the sweltering submarine – the air-conditioning was no longer working – the crew feared death. But, unknown to the US forces, they had a special weapon in their arsenal: a ten kilotonne nuclear torpedo. What’s more, the officers had permission to launch it without waiting for approval from Moscow.

Two of the vessel’s senior officers – including the captain, Valentin Savitsky – wanted to launch the missile. According to a report from the US National Security Archive, Savitsky exclaimed: “We’re gonna blast them now! We will die, but we will sink them all – we will not become the shame of the fleet.”

But there was an important caveat: all three senior officers on board had to agree to deploy the weapon. As a result, the situation in the control room played out very differently. Arkhipov refused to sanction the launch of the weapon and calmed the captain down. The torpedo was never fired.

The "Rivers of Blood" speech was made by British Member of Parliament (MP) Enoch Powell on 20 April 1968, to a meeting of the Conservative Political Centre in Birmingham, England. His speech strongly criticised mass immigration, especially Commonwealth immigration to the United Kingdom and the proposed Race Relations Act. It became known as the "Rivers of Blood" speech, although Powell always referred to it as "the Birmingham speech". The former name alludes to a prophecy from Virgil's Aeneid which Powell quoted:

    As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see 'the River Tiber foaming with much blood'.

Enoch Powell was once interviewed and asked, "Do you understand why people call you a racist?"

His response, which was just as relevant then as it is today, was, "It is one of the modern terms of abuse. And the term of abuse is the more effective, the less defined it is. Then you can throw it at anybody and anything. But I find this word race very irrelevant in the British context. Indeed it's rather a word which we've borrowed from America."
