July 11, 1962 Nevada, the United States conducted Johnnie Boy, a test of the W30 Tactical Atomic Demolition Munition, part of DOD-sponsored Operation Sunbeam to obtain weapon effects data on low-yield nuclear explosions. The yield was 500 tons (.500 kt).



The TADM was an atomic landmine, designed to blow up roads, bridges, dams, and mountain passes to block or slow the advance of Soviet armored forces. It was operational until 1966, when it was replaced by the W45 Medium Atomic Demolition Munition (whose yield was 1-15 kilotons).




300 TADMs—sometimes subsequently replaced by 350 MADMs (below)—were deployed in Alaska (1961-70), Guam (April-June 1964), Hawaii (1959-75), Italy (1959-86), Okinawa (1959-72), S. Korea (1959-86), and W. Germany (1959-86).
