May 14, 1955, ~400-500 miles SW of San Diego, CA, the United States conducted Operation Wigwam, its second underwater nuclear test, to assess submarine vulnerability to deep water (-2000') nuclear explosions. Yield of the B7 “Betty” depth bomb was 30 kt. The B7 or Mark-7 warhead was designed at Los Alamos and was the first US tactical nuclear warhead, used in five separate weapon systems. 225 Mark 90 "Betty" nuclear depth bombs with a variable yield of 8-61 kilotons were manufactured and deployed from 1955-60.

55 years ago today, Lt. Gen. Berton Spivy outlined FREEDOM DROP, a contingency plan to attack North Korea with multiple nuclear weapons during the crisis sparked by its seizure of the Navy/NSA spy ship USS Pueblo on January 23, 1968, a plan that President Lyndon Johnson rejected.
