This month's full moon will be at its fullest around 1:30 pm EDT on Friday, May 5. The lunar eclipse will begin at 11:15 am EDT, peak at 1:24 pm, and end at 3:32 pm, during which the moon will be partially darkened as it moves through the Earth's shadow. However, this eclipse event will only be visible in places where the moon is above the horizon—so not here in the USA.


80 years ago today—more than two years before V-E Day and Nazi Germany’s defeat—the Manhattan Project’s Military Policy Committee eliminated Germany as the target of the still unproven atomic bomb, selecting Japan’s fleet at Truk Lagoon as the best target.

According to Groves’s summary of the meeting:

“The point of use of the first bomb was discussed and the general view appeared to be that its best point of use would be on a Japanese fleet concentration in the Harbor of Truk [in the Pacific, north of New Guinea]. General Styer suggested Tokio but it was pointed out that the bomb should be used where, if it failed to go off, it would land in water of sufficient depth to prevent easy salvage. The Japanese were selected as they would not be so apt to secure knowledge from it as would the Germans.”
