Today in 1950: the residents of Mosinee, Wisconsin participated in a Cold War pageant. That was when the American Legion staged a mock coup in the city to demonstrate what it would be like if the Soviets controlled the United States. A look back:

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
A documentary on Mosinee's 1950 May Day has been in the works for many years, but I'm not sure what the status is of American May Day.
BASIC (Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) launched on this day in 1964.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen would later get a BASIC manual at their school computer lab.

When they later learned about the Altair 8800, they felt users should be able to program it using BASIC.
They struck a deal with the company.
The Altair 8800 became the first successful PC. And Gates and Allen had a fast growing software business.
