I have done a fur bit of panning. I did quite a lot of it in Utah, when I was in college. I followed a wide creek in northern Utah, because it took a lot of thrashing through the bush to get there. I thought it was prime, because it was downhill from a granite promontory, and it was difficult to access. I looked for bends in the creek, and panned heavily in the outside curves of the creek.
My method was to scoop some of the sand from the inside of the curve and swirl it around, dipping the pan to splash the water out every swirl, and eventually hope to leave the gold on the low side of the pan, with all the light stuff swirled out. I found a zone on this creek that was about 50 feet long, and it was fairly productive. I saved up and after eight months, I was able to sell my flake and buy a 100 amp Peavey guitar amp. It was a heavy thing, but it rocked.
Where I now live in the Caribbean, I pan some. I have a new-and-improved pan with ridges on the inside to hold the flake. I think there is Gold in Them Thar Sands. Nothing much of any import so far. I have a testing kit, and I've found a few flakes. I have a lot of time. No time on my hands, because I have a lot of stuff to do and little time to do it in, but I have a lot of time.
My only problem is that if I strike it rich, the government might rule that I must turn over my poke to them. Since the beach is the "King's Bottom" (what an unfortunate term), then "mining" the beach might be considered the Crown's property. That's not going to happen. I will mail it to my buds first.
