The collateral damage in near the hormuz / Bab al-Mandab Strait / Suez canal between USA and Chinese would be nasty to many around World , countries than has not taken any sides.

at least so long there is petrol available .
Beyond what it's doing to the price and availability of petrol, if they keep screwing around at the straits, sooner or later someone is going to pop a tanker, and then the Gulf is going to have another Exxon Valdez incident on their hands.
War has a ridiculous amount of "collateral damage" built-in to it. Life would be a lot better if folks didn't keep on trying to blow each other up over insignificant bullshit... but that ain't human nature, apparently.
.
Oil ship, harmless, defenceless, crew members just working to earn a crust albeit taking a risk versus sophisticated warships on the surface and below plus air assets. All standoff.
Leave the flamin tankers alone. Kinda like a gang of bullies taking on the fat nerd mit glasses on carrying his extended lunch box.
Stick to going after go the military assests and associated infrastructure, Oil ain't like cocaine, fentanyl etc. Little fast boats with armed men speeding towards the coast to deliver their version of sickness and death.
They can explain the reasons for taking out a tanker/s all they want but my thoughts are it's not only a waste/dangerous with implications and the risks far exceed the necessity. It's also an act of cowardice which, thinking back, I would take no part of if I was still in the navy with my older head on me shoulders. It's just shooting Koi Carp in a pond mate. Stick to the sharks.
Can't support taking on unarmed ships regardless of the oil. Take them over as those somalis do.
Yeah, I know, the oil is funding Iran. Sure, buit according to the spoken doctrine, Iran is already finished. By all means if it's the funding oil you're worried about then stop the ship but don't sink it. It's harmless on the surface until it's hit. Sure the Iranians and the Houthis take out the tankers and are called upon for cowardice acts, don't lower the standard to their stoneage thinking.
The results may outweigh the necessity.
