Often, life decisions boil down to the Almighty Dollar.
This is pure speculation, and may be far wide of the mark, but if he's keen on monetizing the site by selling it, and if a new site is created elsewhere in case of a fall, then he might be worried about site devaluation via membership loss or dilution.
But that's just a guess. I can't really presume to know how someone else's mind is working. It's just a possibility...
