April 4, 1976: The Cryonics Institute was founded by the “Father of Cryonics” Robert Ettinger, in Detroit, Michigan, where he served as president until 2003. Ettinger introduced the concept of cryonics with the publication of his book “The Prospect of Immortality” published in 1962. Operations moved to Clinton Township, Michigan in 1993, where it is currently located. The Cryonics Institute currently has 2,322 members worldwide, of which 278 have already been cryopreserved, making it the largest cryonics provider in the world.
The Institute’s mission is to preserve dead human bodies at -196° C (-321° F) for possible restoration to life at a future time.

Robert Chester Wilson Ettinger, born December 4, 1918 - cryopreserved July 23, 2011.
Also stored at the Institute are his mother and both his first and second wives. Damn, that is creepy!
Cryonics is only for the super-wealthy.
Good news: you heard wrong! With CI, the minimum fee for cryopreservation at CI (which includes vitrification perfusion and long term storage) is $28,000 — a one-time fee, due at time of death. And though the fee can be paid in cash, usually a member has a life insurance policy made that pays the amount to CI upon death. The availability of a cryonics team (“Standby”) to perform rapid cooling and cardiopulmonary support upon pronouncement of death can sometimes be paid for by a larger life insurance policy.

Note that The New York Times is not asking the root question here: How could such a gross error even happen in the first place? What biases, what mindset, what hiring practices, what basic lack of understanding of the world allows a publication to make such "mistakes"?
