In fall of 1979, I saw a fireball like that almost directly overhead at 2 am in West Virginia. It was traveling roughly west to east. While there was no explosion noise accompanying it, in the dark of the night at 2 am, it was bright enough to light up the landscape around me, That brightening was what actually made me look upward in time to catch the explosion.
