The Observer Corp network "Operation Skywatch" was disbanded in 1959 when NORAD's Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) eliminated the need for visual surveillance. Relics of the decommissioned SAGE were used in Dr. Strangelove and Colossus, and science fiction TV series such as The Time Tunnel. Throughout its development, there were continual concerns about its real ability to deal with large attacks, and the Operation Sky Shield tests showed that only about one-fourth of enemy bombers would have been intercepted. Nevertheless, the show must go on & on. The early origins of the future Golden Dome which also have many of the same concerns, but surely AI will save us, right?

The family sailed on Sterling Hayden's 98-foot schooner Wanderer for approximately 10 months during the famous 1959 voyage. Hayden departed Sausalito (San Francisco Bay area) at 11 p.m. on January 18, 1959, with his four children (Christian, Dana, Gretchen, and Matthew, ages roughly 6-11) and a small crew (including photographer Dody Weston Thompson (1923-2012) for documentation and planned film work that didn't fully happen). He initially claimed the destination was Santa Barbara but, once outside U.S. territorial waters, announced the true course was to Tahiti in defiance of a court order barring him from taking the children abroad amid a custody/divorce dispute.
The children received tutoring from a crew member instead of formal schooling.
Hayden was technically a fugitive for violating the U.S. court order. The adventurous sail away to paradise allowed bonding and reflection, but he eventually decided to return to California so the children could resume formal education.
The ship itself met its end later, lost on a reef near Rangiroa, northeast of Tahiti, on November 1, 1963, but this was after Hayden's family voyage).
Hayden chronicled the experience in his 1963 autobiography Wanderer, which covers the trip as a central rebellious escape from Hollywood and personal turmoil, though exact day-to-day durations aren't pinpointed in public summaries. The voyage was notable for its defiance, adventure, and family bonding amid challenges like storms and isolation at sea.

John Young even smuggled a corned beef sandwich aboard that floated around the capsule! "The Longest Step" by Norman Rockwell painted the crew right before launch.

The coming purge against wrongthink will be much greater than during Russiagate, COVID and the Ukraine War as governments become weaker and more insecure. Carl Schmitt (1888-1985), the crown jurist of the Nazi Party, wrote extensively about the search for the enemy within. Politics is largely divided into identifying who is a friend ("us"/in-group) and who is an enemy (the "other"/out-group). People within the country who do not fall in line with the regime can be portrayed as having loyalty to the enemy, and political opposition thus becomes an existential threat. Schmitt considered debate and intellectual pluralism to weaken the ability to identify internal enemies.
Weak governments rely more on constructing external enemies and silencing dissent at home. Notice how governments and their stenographers in the media have little to no interest in debating the actual arguments of those who dissent, yet they devote increasing resources to denouncing what is portrayed as treasonous intent.
