The sinking of an unarmed ship in international waters is questionable and could be considered a war crime if such a thing existed anymore but the crew , Australian or otherwise , were following the orders they were given so should not be held accountable for actions they had no control over , as we know war crimes are only attributed to the losers of wars.
I do however think the sinking of a ship that wasn't a threat to the US and the resulting lives lost reflects badly on the US military , the sinking of the General Belgrano is a fair comparison as it was outside the exclusion zone although it was armed and dangerous.
