Way back in the early 90s, I was in Germany. I recall speaking to a guy in his twenties. He was from a wealthy family and he was (by terms of diplomas etc.) well educated.
His thing, with some of his friends, was to go into the city on weekends and brawl with right wing neo-Nazi gangs. Back then, the term they used for themselves was "gegen Nazis" (against Nazis). At the time, I thought it was kind of honorable -- young Germans who were determined to not allow a revival of Nazism in their country.
In hindsight, I see him and his buddies as just one group of political brawlers who were out fighting with a different group of political brawlers. One big change since then was in German society. Back then, their society was still smarting from the terrorist attacks of the Red Army Faction and left wing terrorism was seen as bad. Today, it seems like antifa is practically admired with the leading politicians winking and nodding at their street thuggery. And Germany is not a better place for this change. Far from it.
I was there around the same time. There was a group of young punks in our AO called themselves "Sons of the Reich" that made a nuisance of themselves for a while. I did a little side work bouncing at the club in town and they'd shown up making asses of themselves. The owner wanted them gone so we made them gone. Quite the kerfuffle in the parking lot but they baled before the Polizei showed up. A few weeks later, one of them crashed our main gate and drove a van loaded with gunpowder into our Post church. The POS was promptly pulled out, beaten and detained for MPs. We didn't even see the "bomb" until he was already taken away. Figured he chickened out on setting it off but found out later the improvised trigger and detonator were both inoperable junk.
