I've heard one possible theory that the pistol removed from him was a Sig P320 and may have done it's discharge thing which is what caused the agents to fire, not sure if you've hear that theory or if you place any faith in it.
I've been told that it was in fact a Sig P320, but don't know if that's true or not. The conversation went, specifically, "he was carrying a Sig" to which I replied "not a Sig P320 by any chance?" and they responded "how did you know that?" So, it's likely to have been a Sig P320, but I can't be certain, because the individual telling me that wasn't actually there. It could have just been some internet scuttlebutt they got hold of.
It DID look like the officer who took control of the pistol was shocked or surprised when it went off as he walked away, which sort of supports the theory that it was an unintentional discharge from a Sig P320. And, if a man has a gun drawn covering someone, a weapons discharge whether intentional or not is likely to cause him to send a bullet into whomever he is covering.
After mulling it over for a while, I've come to the final conclusion that it was just piss-poor judgement, and that cost Preddi his life as piss-poor judgement sometimes does to folks.
Yes, he had a right to be armed, even at a protest, but with rights come responsibilities. He should have had better judgement than to go to the protest at all, much less armed. Something legal does not always mean it is also something smart.
And, if you're going to go armed, it's generally not a smart thing to do to call other armed men out for a showdown, especially if there are a lot more of them than there are of you. That is sort of inviting disaster down onto yourself.
So, while he was within his rights to be armed at a protest, it was not a smart thing to do while calling out armed cops. Maybe there should be a special Darwin Award for that category.
When you go armed into a confrontation, you are always accepting the responsibility for your own life if it all goes sideways. It all goes together. Taking artillery against armed men invites them to bring their own artillery to bear against you and do their worst. it's a roll of the dice. You may win, or you may lose, but YOU are responsible for the results of rolling those dice when you make the decision to roll them.
