Feb 16, 1942: The war came visibly to the Americas at 1:30 am in the calm harbor of the little Dutch island of Aruba in the Caribbean. One Nazi torpedo missed its mark & ran upon the Aruba beach. Shortly after this photo was taken it exploded, killing 4 Dutch torpedo experts.

Feb 16, 1960: The U.S. Navy nuclear-powered (two reactors) radar picket submarine USS Triton (SSRN-586) begins Operation Sandblast, setting sail from New London, Connecticut, to begin the first submerged circumnavigation of the globe under the command of Captain Edward L. Beach Jr.

The actual submerged circumnavigation occurred between 24 February and 25 April 1960, covering 26,723 nautical miles (49,491 km; 30,752 mi) in 60 days and 21 hours at the average speed of 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph) while crossing the Equator on four different occasions. Also, the total duration of Triton's shakedown cruise was 84 days 19 hours 8 minutes, covering 36,335.1 nautical miles (67,292.6 km; 41,813.7 mi), and Triton remained submerged for a total of 83 days 9 hours, covering 35,979.1 nautical miles (66,633.3 km; 41,404.0 mi) during her maiden voyage. The New York Times described Triton's submerged circumnavigation of the world as "a triumph of human prowess and engineering skill, a feat which the United States Navy can rank as one of its bright victories in man's ultimate conquest of the seas."

Byte Magazine, Nov 1978
Long before the Internet escaped from the lab, connected the planet and redefined what it meant to use a computer there was a brave and pioneering band of computer users who spent their time, money and sanity setting up their home computers and phone lines to welcome anyone who called. By using a modem, anyone else who knew the phone number of these computers could connect to them, leave messages, send and receive files.... and millions did.
When the Internet grew in popularity in the early 1990s, the world of the BBS faded, changed, and became a part of the present networked world.. but it just wasn't the same.
BBS: The Documentary
As the US attempts to pivot away from Europe, (to laser focus on China) one of two things may/will happen:
- Integration: The Europeans realize that they must learn to stand on their own feet and cooperate.
- Disintegration: The American pacifier is gone, and the Europeans begin to turn on each other to compete for leadership. I'm betting disintegration, and also war as they hope for unity by inflating and demonizing the Russian threat and then provoke a war. The EU is like Hotel California. You can check-in but you can never leave.
