February 5, 1869: "The Welcome Stranger" was the largest alluvial gold nugget ever discovered. It was unearthed by Cornish miners John Deason and Richard Oates in Moliagul, 9 miles (14 km) north-west of Dunolly in Victoria, Australia. Bally fever!!!

Two miners, John Deason and Richard Oates originally from Conwell, England, both had small farms and staked a gold mining claim in the area. In February of 1869, Deason was breaking up the soil on the claim when he hit what he thought was a rock. After hitting it a second and third time, he cleared away the soil and unearthed the massive nugget.

Oates was busy plowing in his nearby paddock and was called up by Deason's son. They covered the nugget and waited until it was safe to remove it and then took it to the Deason's house.

Deason and Oates, accompanied by a bodyguard of friends, took the nugget into the town of Dunolly and sold it at the London Chartered Bank of Australia. Since there were no scales in the bank big enough to weigh the nugget, it was taken to a local blacksmith's shop to be reduced in size. It's believed the nugget as a whole weighed around 241 pounds before it was trimmed.

Assuming 241 pounds, at today's gold prices it would be worth about $18,616,768.

An odd sinister looking pyramid tomb in the overgrown graveyard of a deconsecrated church in Liverpool. Final resting place for Scottish civil engineer and civil engineering contractor William MacKenzie who was one of the leading European contractors in the 1840s. And of course an urban myth is attached.

Interred in 1851, William MacKenzie’s name is mentioned in many Liverpool guidebooks owing to the fact that grave is marked with an impressive fifteen foot (4.57 metre) pyramid shaped tombstone.

The story, often told as a sworn truth, goes that McKenzie was a keen gambler and left instructions that he should be entombed above ground within the pyramid, sitting upright at a card table and clutching a winning hand of cards . Some tellers go one step further asserting that MacKenzie ensured that his body was never committed to the earth as a means of cheating Satan out of claiming his immortal soul . It follows almost naturally that tales of MacKenzie’s ghost roaming the overgrown churchyard and surrounding area are told today by many local folklorists and tour guides alike.

In truth, several such monuments can be seen in graveyards across the British Isles, some of them even having remarkably similar tales attached. Saint Thomas à Becket’s churchyard in Brightling, East Sussex is home to a twenty-five foot (7.62 metre) pyramid dedicated to John “Mad Jack” Fuller. Local legend had it that Fuller was entombed in the pyramid in full dress and top hat seated at a table set with a roast chicken and a bottle of wine. This was discovered to be untrue during renovations in 1982. Fuller is indeed buried in the conventional manner beneath the pyramid.

The inscription on MacKenzie's Pyramid door reads: "In the vault beneath lie the remains of William MacKenzie of Newbie Dumfrishire, Esquire who died 29th October 1851 aged 57 years. Also, Mary his wife, who died 19th December 1838 aged 48 years and Sarah, his second wife who died 9th December 1867 aged 60 years. This monument was erected by his Brother Edward as a token of love and affection A.D. 1868. The memory of the just is blessed".

The inscription proves that MacKenzie was buried beneath (not entombed inside) the pyramid and that the monument itself was not erected until 16 years after his demise. Even so, the legend of his upright interment continues to be told and believed by many.

Back across the pond, Nicolas Cage had already booked a pyramid tomb in New Orleans.

Cage has a history with the city of New Orleans, having purchased both the infamously haunted LaLaurie Mansion and the historic Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel. Both properties were foreclosed on in 2009 after a tax debacle. Subsequently, Cage purchased his unnamed tomb in the city's beloved St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, home to the grave of another of New Orleans' supernatural heavies, Marie Laveau.

The empty grave is a stark, nine-foot-tall stone pyramid that stands in obvious contrast to the blockier, above-ground burial sites that have been crumbling away in the cemetery for over two centuries. There is no name on the pyramid yet, but it is emblazoned with the Latin maxim, "Omnia Ab Uno," which translates to "Everything From One."

The actor himself has chosen to remain silent about his reasoning for the flamboyant tomb. Some speculate it's an homage to the "National Treasure" movie franchise, though given that many cemeteries host pyramid grave markers, it may have simply been a stylistic choice. Others think the pyramid is evidence of the strange actor's ties to the probably-fictitious secret Illuminati society. Because of antique portraits bearing an uncanny resemblance to Cage that have surfaced online, the more paranormally-minded suggest that the pyramid is where Cage will regenerate his immortal self. The rumor around town is that Cage has considered himself cursed since owning LaLaurie's mansion (his box office record does reflect this) and he feels being next to Marie Laveau will un-curse him.

New Orleans may not like Nic Cage, but it's clear that he likes New Orleans. Though some feel Cage is detracting from the historic importance of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, his grave has already become a part of its mythology. For whatever reason, a tradition has arisen of leaving lipstick kisses behind on the nameless tomb.

American cemeteries often have a schizophrenic attitude towards Egyptian architecture. While almost all Egyptian architecture has something to do with death and the afterlife, thus making it a perfect fit for the cemetery, it’s pagan origin often raises the hackles of the religious community. Memorial designers often soften the pagan profile of Egyptian forms by adding Christian figures and symbols. The Van Ness Parsons mausoleum is a perfect example of this hybridization. Over the entrance to the mausoleum are vulture wings, a Egyptian symbol for maternal care, but that is softened by statues of an adoring sphinx gazing upon Jochebed holding her son Moses, while another statue portrays Jesus holding a lamb symbolizing innocence. Jesus is known as the Lamb of God. In the distance is another maternal figure that may be a representation of Pharaoh’s daughter finding Moses in the bulrushes, in Egypt.

The most noted occupant of the mausoleum is Albert Ross Parsons (1847-1933), a noted pianist and head of the piano department at the Metropolitan Conservatory of Music. More apropos to the mausoleum, Parsons was also an Egyptologist who wrote the book, New Light From the Great Pyramid: An astronomico-geographical system of the ancients recovered etc. in 1893. Also sharing space in the pyramid is Parsons’ wife Alice Schuyler Van Ness who died in 1931.

February 5, 1958: BROKEN ARROW! A US Air Force B-47 bomber dropped a 7,600 pound Mk-15 thermonuclear bomb into waters off Tybee Island, near Savannah, Georgia after colliding with an F-86 fighter jet. The bomb was never recovered. The search was terminated April 16, 1958.



The Air Force maintains that its "nuclear capsule" (physics package), used to initiate the nuclear reaction, was removed before its flight aboard the B-47. As noted in the Atomic Energy Commission "Form AL-569 Temporary Custodian Receipt (for maneuvers)", signed by the aircraft commander, the bomb contained a simulated 150-pound (68 kg) cap made of lead. Such approval to carry an armed nuke would not come until safer "sealed-pit nuclear capsule" weapons began to be deployed in June 1958.
