Jan 20, 1887: the U.S. Senate in secret session modified the convention providing for the extension of the Hawaiian Treaty, after adding an amendment as clause II, providing that "His Majesty the King of the Hawaiian Islands, grants to the US Government the exclusive right to enter the harbor of Pearl River, in the Island of Oahu, and to establish and maintain there a coaling and repair station for the use of vessels of the U.S.


Following the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the US Navy established a base on the island in 1899.


Jan 20, 1952: Herbert A. Philbrick (1915–1993) was a Boston-area advertising executive who was encouraged by the FBI to infiltrate the Communist Party USA between 1940 and 1949. His autobiography was the basis for the 1950s television series I Led 3 Lives from October 1, 1953, to January 1, 1956.
