Jan 7, 1954: Georgetown–IBM experiment: The first public demonstration of a machine translation system is held in New York at the head office of IBM. The experiment involved completely automatic translation of 250 words and six grammar rules into English. The translation was carried out using an IBM 701 mainframe computer (launched in April 1953). The algorithm first translates Russian words into numerical codes, then performs the following case-analysis on each numerical code to choose between possible English word translations, reorder the English words, or omit some English words.

Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex located near the ghost mining town of Goldstone in a remote location of the Mojave Desert. The Goldstone facility was conceived and, in 1958, construction began on the Pioneer Deep Space Station (DSS-11) antenna.
The Pioneer Station (DSS-11), a 26 meter polar mounted antenna was the first deep space antenna to be constructed at Goldstone. Completed Dec.1958 in time to support the Pioneer 3 mission, DSS-11 became the proto-type antenna for the Deep Space Network and went on to track a variety of NASA missions including all Pioneer spacecraft, the Echo Balloon projects, Ranger, Lunar Orbiter, Surveyor, Apollo, Helios, Mariner, Viking and Voyager. A Manned Space Flight wing was built at the Pioneer site to support the manned space flights of the Apollo program. DSS-11 was officially mothballed in 1981 and was declared a National Historic Monument as the first deep space antenna in the Deep Space Network (DSN) in 1985.
History of the Goldstone Antennas (1950s- 2000s)
The antennas of Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex are busy 24 hours a day bringing in data from missions to planets such as Mercury, Mars, and Saturn; as well as moons, comets, asteroids and even missions as far away as the edge of our solar system. These sensitive antennas are capable of retrieving signals as small as 1 billionth of 1 billionth of 1 watt…a mere whisper.
As a spacecraft travels outward from Earth, its signal steadily decreases in power so that when it reaches a DSN antenna from a typical outer planet encounter, it can be extremely low wattage- 20 billion times weaker than the power required for a digital wristwatch. This makes precision pointing of the antenna critical.
The antennas of Goldstone also are used for Solar System Radar (GSSR). Solar system radar is used to image planets, asteroids and comets. This provides scientists with a better understanding of planetary surface characteristics and the shape, speed and trajectory of objects such as asteroids and comets.
The heart of deep space communications at NASA is our Deep Space Network, or DSN, which is managed by JPL. This international array of antennas located at three complexes in California, Spain, and Australia allow us to communicate with our missions in “deep space,” which we at JPL define as from the Moon and beyond.
Jan 7, 1975: IBM introduces a new accounting computer, the System/32 (IBM 5320) with a legendary 5, 9 or 13MB of storage space. The New York Times described the S/32 as "a compact computer for first‐time users with little or no computer programming experience." Having the appearance of a computerized desk, the System/32 was nicknamed the "Bionic Desk" after The Six Million Dollar Man, a popular U.S. TV program. The system was leased for around $1000/month.

After MTV shut down its 24-hour music channels across the globe last month, one ambitious fan has launched a free website featuring 27,293 classic music videos and vintage commercials from across the network’s history. The site is organized into multiple channels, taking viewers on a chronological journey starting with “1st day” content from the network’s 1981 launch through the 2020s. As a welcome bonus, the site includes archives from the landmark hip-hop show Yo! MTV Raps and heavy metal program Headbangers Ball.

Quote:On the machine front linguist Léon Dostert at Georgetown University directed the first attempt, in which the IBM 701 electronic computer was used in 1954 to translate Russian into English. The project was eventually funded by the CIA, along with the National Science Foundation and U.S. military. In the Soviet Union, Aleksei Liapunov, a leading figure in cybernetics, discovered a scientific abstract about Dostert’s project and launched a competing English-to-Russian project, which by 1964 made the Soviet Union the leader in the field of machine translation.

Quote:This unit was purchased and used by the Australian Employers of Waterside Labour. It was used for the organisation's accounting, payroll and bookkeeping operations. There is an asset register on the machine of items owned by the AEWL at each of the South Australian ports. There are also letters, correspondence and labour allocation files. This particular model was built in 1976 and the last time it was booted up was 29 December 1989.
The AEWL organisation ceased to exist in 1993 when it merged with the Seamen's Union of Australia to become the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA). The AEWL was deregistered on 23 January 2006.
The computer was then stored in a space which became an office occupied by Flinders Ports Pty Ltd. Peter Dowset, and employee of Flinders Ports, recognised the machine's signioficance, and that it was still opperable, and offered it for donation to the Powerhouse Museum in 2010.
