Dec 31, 1907: The first ever ball drop in Times Square NYC.The tradition of dropping a ball in Times Square began when Adolph S. Ochs, the publisher of The New York Times, hired the sign maker company Artkraft Strauss to build then lower a 700-pound wood-and-iron ball, five feet in diameter and illuminated by 100 25-watt bulbs, to mark the passage from 1907 to 1908. The original ball was made by Jacob Starr, a Ukrainian immigrant metalworker. The ball descended slowly from a flagpole atop One Times Square, at the intersection of Broadway, Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street, where thousands witness it live and millions more on television each New Year’s Eve.



Dec 31, 2025: This year’s ball is the largest ever, a geodesic sphere, 12 feet in diameter and weighing 12,350 pounds, with 5,280 crystals and LED light pucks. Times Square to hold second ball drop in July to mark America’s 250th birthday.
