The first ever Royal Christmas Message, written by Rudyard Kipling and broadcast live over wireless from Sandringham by King-Emperor George V in 1932.
"Through one of the marvels of modern Science, I am enabled, this Christmas Day, to speak to all my peoples throughout the Empire. I take it as a good omen that Wireless should have reached its present perfection at a time when the Empire has been linked in closer union. For it offers us immense possibilities to make that union closer still."
BBC's first Director-General, Sir John Reith, set the expectation in the opening programme:

If Sen. John Tower (at right) didn't die in 1991 in a plane crash down in Georgia (214 days before Robert Maxwell fell out of his yacht and drowned), he quite possibly would have been Secretary of Defense instead of Dick Cheney.

The series was used to "recharge the revolutionary cause." The first volume famously begins:
Quote:"These are the times that try men’s souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph."

BBC's first Director-General, Sir John Reith, set the expectation in the opening programme:
Quote: "Don't expect too much in the early days; for some time we shall transmit comparatively simple programmes, to give the best chance of intelligible reception and provide evidence as to the type of material most suitable for the service in each zone. The programmes will neither be very interesting nor very good." This address was read out five times as it was broadcast live to different parts of the world.
