During WWII, the Japanese Navy requisitioned all 36 passenger liners belonging to NYK Lines (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) and converted them to aircraft carriers and troop transports. By 1945, all the liners had been sunk except the hospital ship Hikawa Maru which is now a museum.
