I don't believe the government(s) have more than data -- radar returns, video etc. Two big drivers from the government standpoint.
1 -- they don't want the public to believe there is something out there they can't at least somewhat influence -- thus rumors of shootdowns, crashes, recovery of craft, etc. If UFOs are untouchable, that means the government is NOT the top authority ... nightmare for officials.
2 -- all of the speculation serves disinformation operations that serve as cover for new weapons and technology development of very much human origin.

I would take it further and say people don't want to believe they are not the smartest. Very hard for some to accept they are not the sharpest pencil in the box.

I suspect you are correct regarding "more to come shortly". The whole affair has the feel of a stage being set for some dramatic "reveal".
The 'worldwide' aspect is noteworthy. So many governments barely say anything about the topic other than to snicker at the fascination some show for the phenomenon.
