December 7, 1941: A Message from Pearl Harbor that changed the World forever.






On December 7, 1941, an NBC radio affiliate in Honolulu made an urgent phone call to New York. In it, he begins to describe what the world would later know as the attack on Pearl Harbor.

This short documentary tells the story of Harold & Eda Oberg, & the film footage they recorded of the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941.  The couple captured shots during & after the attack on Hickam Army Airfield. Today Hickam Air Force Base.






USS Arizona burned for two days resulting in 1,177 killed. Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd was aboard his flagship USS Arizona on the morning of 7 Dec 1941 as Commander Battleship Division One. He would become the highest ranking officer killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. His remains were never recovered. The US Navy lost more men at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 than it did in all of World War I. This is the first year at the commemoration ceremony at Pearl Harbor that no Pearl Harbor survivor has attended. We have lost so many over the past few years and as few as 12 veterans remain living today.


This photo of soldiers and young ladies gathered at a picnic at Austin's Camp Mabry, Texas on December 7, 1941 - the day of the attack. It was at 2:30 p.m. central time that Franklin Roosevelt received word of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. If we assume that this picnic was scheduled for noon or 1:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. (probably a fair guess), this affair was no doubt going on as the Japanese were attacking. These smiling, unknowing folks were right there on the edge, at the far end of the teeter totter of history. They will go home from this event and the entire world and their entire lives and futures will have changed. Some, probably, did not survive the war.
