I agree that it's bullshit but I think humans are to blame for that case and harm was done to those people. It's a double whammy of wrongs, first the embracement of the incident and then the embarrassment of the coverup. I'm going with people came to their senses, but the bad actors might also still be out there. Doubt we will ever find the truth on this.
On the alien angle, it doesn't matter where they say they are from, they can say they are from the closest star Proxima Centauri and we still wouldn't be able to verify it or do anything about it and they would know. We can barely leave the earth. It doesn't matter..we might as well be monkeys in a zoo throwing poop at the handlers. Eventually they will say fuck it and get elephants instead.
